A Week In Medical School | FIRST EXAM!

3rd year med student here. You're off to a great start! You will be overwhelmed at times. Do not be afraid to take a break, even take a day off here and there. You will feel refreshed and ready to go for the next study binge 👍

Just a word of advice and to all other incoming (though you seem very studious) but when I was starting in med, it took me a while to really adjust and didn’t take it seriously in the beginning. Start strong, be strong all through out the way and finish strong. In the end of the school year I was so scared cause I don’t think I would pass a certain subject. Damn, thankfully I passed. 4:15 - My guess is b: Neuropathy 4:25 - Bam!! Time for my break now. One book I recommend is, "The Checklist Manifesto" by Dr. Atul Gawande, MD. Looks like you're getting acclimated to routines, and his material will be of value. He is also a fan of GTD. 5:59 - You have the trusted Calendar, and the ToDo Lists, happening, which is awesome. One suggestion is to place these Next Actions within an appropriate Category -- either a location (@Home @Anywhere, etc) and/or possibly an Area of Focus. By grouping actions by Area of Focus, you'll then be able to scan down and intuitively know which item to do first. If it's hard-edged -- day or day/time, then it's on a calendar. If it's not hard-edged, then it's on your lists. You could use the Labels for defining the Categories/Areas of Focus. 6:10 - Your comment about "Not too worried about anatomy" is a good example. This is something that you need to put on a calendar for a future event (eg test), but the Next Action for anything Anatomy (in this case) could be on an Action List (eg Category). The key is to come up with Categories that make sense for you. Because this item right now is on a list with "everything else" it's somewhat getting in the way of your current conscious thinking. Other things need your attention right now. Anatomy quiz next Monday - Do you have this on your calendar for Monday, and do you have a tickler for Sunday -- Sunday is when you could go to that category that may remind you of brush-up actions you need to do before Monday -- something like that.... You talked about your PBL group. As items come (as you're studying), and a thought comes in to your mind about bringing up at PBL group, you can throw it in to InBox. Then, you process the note into a category - something like @Agenda - PBL. When you go to your PBL group you look at the @Agenda - PBL list and BAM! everything that you had accrued in there can now be reviewed, quickly scanned and discussed. You "definitely" need an InBox on your desk, some scratch paper, and a pen. The idea is that, as you're working/studying, if anything pops in to your head, you immediately capture it, and then throw it into the InBox. Later on, you can go through the items in the InBox and process them -- trash, Calendar, do, whatever. 15:45 - "I didn't really have a pattern for studying..." That's where we come in and offer you ideas!!! You're doing awesome.

Hi Shaun, Loving your videos. I'm an incoming M2 in Canada. I can tell you now that your studying "routine" constantly changes as you learn more and adapt to different topics/organ systems. I've finally gotten down a consistent system now. It took me all of M1 to figure it out with all of the different resources available. Don't let it stress you out. Cheers!

First months of med school are to find the best way to study...From my experience, I took about a year to find a study routine...so take your time and find a study routine that works better for you... just study as much as you can...have a great week!

The best advice I could give you is instead of using rereading and highlighting study methods do more practice test what is khown as active Recall study method. ^^ Good luck ;)

I was an English major, so the biochemistry in medical school was NOT my cup of tea. My recommendation is trying to incorporate as many learning strategies as possible (listening to a lecture/annotating, then verbally explaining the concepts, then writing everything out by memory - get a white board and write write write over and over!). Then use extra resources like B&B/Pathoma/Osmosis/Ninja Nerd for weakness. Use Sketchy if you can for pharmacology/micro. You'll eventually find what works for you if you don't at first. Also, Anki is amazing for rote memorization of details! Good luck!

Shaun, you're adorable! Your enthusiasm and excitement for med school reminds me of me when I started in Med School (it was 10 years ago, which scares me to say because now I feel old! Hey man, MS3 here. I remember starting med school like it was yesterday. It goes by fast! If you have any questions on how to attack preclinical years never hesitate to hit me up!

practice questions, practice questions, did i mention practice questions? they are the best way to learn to material in my opinion. when you do them find out why they put certain answer choices as an option. knowing why they put them there will help you in other questions where those options are the answer. i hope that makes sense. also dont be afraid to use youtube as a source for some topics, i know boards and beyond is good, but it might be out of scope for now for your first semester. my favorite is ninjanerds, they are amazing for embryology. i think its because of them i never missed an embryology question. it also helps when you are going through lecture to ask yourself "how can they turn this slide into a question"? it takes a bit of experimenting to find out what works for you, but i know you've got this!

I'm going into medical biophysics (MRI & CT physics) grad school, so it's fun to see what "regular" med school looks like!

Just make your own flashcards (mix them up with ppts, B&B material etc) with anki and use spaced repetition. The sooner you start, the better. You will be thanking yourself in 2-3 years. P.S. Also include the PBL cases

I didn’t watch all the videos yet, but i want to know how private colleges works in the US and if there is any type of funding and what is the prerequisite. Here in Brazil, private medical schools are very expensive and the grade for obtaining a loan is almost the same as for entering the same course but in a public college. 3rd year resident here. Take 1 day off a week for yourself. Don’t study at all. I chose Sunday. Gives you a break and a day to relax.

Hi !!! I graduated from med school in Mexico about a year ago and wanted to share you my tips with anatomy. I learned that I am a visual learner and the text book that we had was black and white with a few drawings . Not very helpful with my exams . So I found a book called netter's anatomy and it is really colorful. There are also flash cards 😉. Also I assigned a color for my highlighters ( title pink, subtitle green...etc) . I hope this helps while you study. Don't worry. You are doing great. The first few weeks are the ones that you need to find out how to study. Your videos are making me miss my classes so bad while I study for my residency exam hahaha. Please continue with your videos they are so great . It's interesting to me how the US does med school. In Mexico after you graduate highschool you apply directly to med school, study for 7 years and before you graduate you need to do whay we call a social service for a year. Basicaly you are a doctor to a small comunity in your state but with a small pay (57 dollars a month) by the government. They don't pay us enough during that year because one of our presidents ( Lazaro Cárdenas) in the 40's said it was "our duty" to help our people.

Hi! M2 here! I'm guessing you're in anatomy and covering some basic biochemistry as well? For anatomy practice questions I really liked BRS anatomy and Lippencott anatomy. Anki is also very helpful for IDing anatomical structures. For biochemistry I use anki and draw out any pathways on a whiteboard. I also liked to make diagrams, charts and tables for anatomy to quiz myself. Cover up the spaces or try to write/draw it from memory.
