Hi Katie! Bassoonist here that enjoys your videos. I was an all-state player and studied some in college, but ultimately got burned out and ended up doing an engineering degree which I use in my day job. I moonlight as a bassoonist playing in lots of community groups around town and getting a handful of paid gigs each year. I definitely understand the mental health struggles since I started a music degree and finished my engineering degree much later I always felt behind all of my friends I graduated high school with. I am excited that a lot of my community orchestras are coming back in the fall. Enjoy your videos and living vicariously through your adventures you post on youtube. Stay happy and healthy!

Thanks for being transparent about your anxiety and depression. Like you, I found that the pandemic only heightened those feelings for me. I found Cognitive Behavioral Therapy helpful especially helpful these last two years :) I really enjoyed this vlog! I also enjoyed your winter vlogs as well. It inspired me to pick up my flute again after 6 months of not playing. I set attainable goals as you and my therapist recommended. :)

Hey Katie! First, I want to say I love your watching your videos and your channel as a whole :) Thank you for sharing and speaking on some deeper topics such as mental health. Second, I wanted to tell you how much I related to this video and some of the topics you mentioned in it. I definitely struggle with comparing myself to my friends and colleagues a lot. While I'm a clarinet player and studying music, I don't go to a conservatory school, but have some very talented friends that do. I constantly, CONSTANTLY, feel like I'm not doing enough, not practicing enough, and am very hard on myself in general. I think for lots of people this past year was a struggle; especially a struggle to pick up my instrument and do good practicing. Motivation was so low and I felt like I was just playing to a computer or recording device for such a long time, at some point I just stopped trying. I was getting assigned very difficult rep like Brahms and Poulenc, but had no motivation to practice them, when those sonatas require many hours of work. While I'm slowly getting back into practicing, it's definitely hard not to beat myself up about wasting time and not practicing enough this past year. I think, however, we need to acknowledge that this year was very difficult on everyones mental health, and we need to be kind to ourselves so we can continue into the future with a good attitude and mindset. I hope you are doing well and still staying safe, and if you made it through my whole comment, thank you! Excited to watch more of your vids in the future :)) -Alessandro

Amir is such a sweetie! Honestly Amir's the best person to be around with. And weirdly enough it was also my childhood dream to stay overnight at the Metropolitan Museum of Art to the point that I wrote about it in my book that I published ages ago. I didn't know that there was already a book about that!

Hi Katie! i just recently came across your channel and I really enjoy it! I'm an amateur flute player and I've been in a community band and flute ensemble since 1998. The band just recently started up practicing again in mid May. I was really anxious to gather again so its totally understandable that you feel the same way. Thanks for being so open about your feelings. I think most musicians, artists etc. feel the same way. You motivate me to be a better flutist! Hugs!

I enjoy honest videos like this and the comparison part really resonates! I feel it's common amongst the creative fields as we ought to see what we produce on a more personal level because it's coming from a space we really care about. Only the courageous one would admit it publicly, which is great because overcoming starts from acknowledging the thoughts & emotions. I had quite some bad time with these ruminating thoughts for many years, being away from some social media helps but they kept coming back. Until one day I chanced upon a book (Practising Happiness by Ruth A. Baer) and things start to really improve. It's like an etude for the mind!

When I got into Music Uni my teached made us play the whole Andersen op.15 the first year. It was exhausting but great for our technique and resistance. Now I'm finishing my masters degree and I think I't be so good to try and play them again! Thank you for the idea :)

You are not alone, depression sucks but know that 2o2o for me was a chance to reflect on what is important and it helped me prioritize things, and reminded me that I can choose my battles. You will be back to your usual energy soon er than you expect, . Love your vids, thank you for sharing.

Hi Katie! what kind of application do you use on your iPad for digital music? I am thinking about buying an Ipad for school, do you prefer using it over traditional sheet music?

I have an iPad and I find it convenient for sheet music. If you already have the sheet music you can scan the files in the files app to get a clear picture. And there are so many other benefits that come with an iPad.
