A Week in Tōhoku: The best of Japan's North! | Aomori, Yamagata, Morioka

Let's travel to Japan's hidden gem of an area: Tohoku! This cluster of prefectures gets visited by less than 2% of the total volume of tourists in the country, and honestly I strongly recommend you become a part of this percentage before the masses learn about everything Tohoku has to offer! We've taken JR trains between Yamagata, Aomori and Morioka and learned that this area is absolutely jam packed with culture, stunning nature begging to be hiked upon, photo opportunities, local food specialties and also.. dogs!
For reference, we've done this trip at the end of October - as you can tell, autumn and autumn leaves happen much sooner in Tohoku than they do in Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka! So if you want to see some stunning foliage but can't visit Japan towards end of November, that's another reason to go to Tohoku for ya!

I know I helped shoot little bits of this, but I'm still blown away by how pretty this video is. Miss Japan dearly...

You know, planned a trip to Tohoku for three weeks and at first, wasn't too excited because it felt 'different' from the classic Japanese experience. I've watched this video twice and can't tell you how thrilled and happy I feel. Through this video, and this is to the camera man as well, you conveyed peaceful vibes. You sent all the right energy. So thank you for the work and hey, for what it's worth, you've earned a new subscriber ! Will make a video myself of the trip, so hey, maybe it will inspire others, like you inspired us!

I had this just running in the background while doing chores but had to rewind and actually sit down and watch it properly. The cinematography is so good.

My wife and I went up to Mt Hakoda by the cable car. When we disembarked at the top, the wind was howling during late October autumn. We looked around for a minute, took some quick snap-shots and joined the long queue back to the cable car and just in time for the last bus arriving at 4.30 pm. It was already getting dark. I could not imagine being stranded at the foot of the mountain and literally without a soul there for the night. So, those who do not self-drive, please be very aware of the timing of the bus schedule.

Japan in autumn is so beautiful! The tranquility and charm of the places you showed was really calming and inviting. Tohoku firmly enters my list of places to visit!

Great video! So evocative, loved the fall colors! We had a great spring visit to Kakunodate about 10 years ago. It was rainy, so most of the petals had fallen off the trees and made a vibrant pink carpet on the ground. What a wonderful visit that was!

You're right: RU-vid has reached saturation point in regard to videos about Tokyo and Osaka. Been done to death. But this was a revelation. Learned so much about about a much underappreciated part of Japan. Terrific stuff.

I loved your video. I went to Tōhoku last year and will go this year again. I adored Morioka, awesome city with great vibes. ❤If you go to Aomori Pref. again, please visit Hirosaki City.

Hirosaki seems great! .) At this point I am just realising I have a bit of a crush on Northern Japan so I am really hoping to go back and see more of it soon, thanks for the tip! .)

Same!! We're renting a car and hitting all of the Tohoku prefectures and I was growing quite scared because of it feels calmer than the vibrant center. Anyways! Let me know if you hit any hidden gems.

That last frame of the akita at 21:25 is me every morning after the alarm, just idling there for 20 minutes staring into the void.

Great video with some lovely shots. That temple looked amazing, such intricate carving! Would love to check out Morioka one day, been to Tokyo and then south to the usual spots but North has it's appeal! :-)

I’ve lived in Japan for 20 years now, but I confess I still haven’t made it up to the Tohoku area. Thank you for making a video about this beautiful and underappreciated region of Japan… and for reminding me that I need to finally get up there and check it out! (In my defense, it’s a bit of a long trip from where I live in Mie prefecture. But one I will make!)

I love North Japan 🫶🫶🫶🫶 this video has brought so many memories from our last trip 😭 I would say that Aomori was much busier when we went (I think they have more local tourism during summer), although not super busy which was great 🙂

Awesome vlog Kat and Simon. I was just thinking when I saw the title that you were in Sharla/Abroad in Japan territory, but what are the chances of actually bumping into them? Started watching Chris and Sharla during lockdown and they're largely responsible for my rather feeble attempts to learn Japanese using Duolingo.

It was really exciting watching the Journey across Japan North edition this December - although a bit jealous that Chris and the team got to see so much more than us. I think next time we might try to brave renting a car and driving around Japan!

@@Kakibot Yes, it was a great series. It was the original Journey Across Japan that got me hooked on Chris's channel, so it was great to see him and the team shooting in that style again. Loved the overlaps with Sharla's channel as well; same location but a very different style and content. Driving across Japan would be a brilliant adventure. Now that you've met Chris and Sharla, you and Simon could do a couple of crossover episodes as part of the trip.

Why do I feel like the commentary is always a complaint disguised as a compliment?
@simonmountney
@simonmountney 3 месяца назад
No offence intended but I think that might be a you problem if that's your interpretation. Kats favourite place on earth is Japan, so if she says something critical it's to inform, not to just rant. If you're referring to her views on Aomori, I agree with her, the city is objectively dying out and it felt like a ghost town when we were there
