The old building (at 7:30) seems to be an old brick factory where bricks were made. The openings come from ovens in which the bricks were baked. Here in the Netherlands there are many along the major rivers, where people dig for the clay that bricks are made of.

We, my wife, 2 small dogs & I cut the cable 3 years ago. Saving $$$$and enjoying Ben, Emily, and cat, remember we have dogs. And are extremely happy. Too. Wished it got as cold here. In Nor CA.

Mr Google says t'canal were built to transport lime, so seems probable. you'd expect there to be a limestone quarry of sorts nearby though.

Good guide to tell a stoat from a weasel,,,,a weasel is weasely recognisable and a stoat is stoataly different,, great to spot them ,,lovely video as always thanks for sharing xx

I’ve got a barn cat identical to Alan, called Clio. She hunts mice all day, and sleeps in a heated tack room at night. She’s a real character like Alan. Keep up the great work 👏

These episodes are must see tv for me. The addition of the drone footage makes the flavor of the surroundings more palpable. The special effects were fun and adorable. I was wondering if you’d consider creating a wee Alan like one of your beans? I’m at the take my money stage just thinking about it; 😂 That would be exploiting the wee beastie, unfortunately. Life is a constant conundrum, isn’t it? 😉

I think there is an interesting parallel between a couple living an untraditional life (not a 9-5 no mortgage) and documenting it on a non traditional platform (the “gatekeepers” give us never ending versions of the same three dramas, talent shows, and comedies) I hope you guys don’t find this too onerous because we love sharing your journey. I live near Mt Doom in the central North Island of Aotearoa/New Zealand, and currently hunkered down with my cat Lynda, binge watching your channel before cyclone Gabrielle hits later today😜. In the early 1980s I lived in High Farnhill above the Leeds and Liverpool canal, and loved watching the narrow boats go by. I hope to see you go down that route sometime.

Nice one guys. Just one observation, wood for the burner. Get into the habit of seriously stockpiling timber for the burner at every opportunity. This is a such a sustainable and readily available resource and will save you lots of money in the long run. Alan was as cute as always, have a great trip to Portugal xx

Very true, I was working on the river Calder near Hebden Bridge when I spotted a mink 1st time I had seen one. A local told me animal right activists set them free in the 1980s. They are very destructive creatures.

@@nicothechihuahua3167 Spot on, yes, unfortunately it was a very misguided thing to do releasing the mink. I'm completely opposed to fur farming but it was absolutely disastrous releasing them into the wild. We've seen them here in South Wales, guessing they're everywhere in the UK.

I'm just going through the process of completing the sale of my flat then I'll be buying my boat. 5 years of dreaming finally becoming a reality! I watched the stunning early morning shots of the canal and shed a little tear because I can't believe this is going to be my life too! I'm so incredibly lucky. Discovered your channel yesterday, have so enjoyed your fab videos! I took my first narrowboat holiday with a friend last year. What an experience though a little nerve wracking initially, navigating the narrow bridges along the Monmouthshire & Brecon canal. We’re in our 60’s & 70’s so it was a bit of a challenge 🫣 but what a wonderful, tranquil time we had. Long may you all enjoy your way of life and please keep us posted 👍🏼

So glad you walked up to the locks. That staircase pair of locks are the very first 2 locks I ever worked. In 1981 we hired our first narrowboat from Dartline Cruisers which was located at the bottom of these locks. They helped us to get through them and sent us on our way to Llangollen. Many fond memories.
