My first foray into foreign steam on a trip organised by a friend of my dad to Germany to visit the Harz Mountain Railways. We stayed in a lovely hotel in the town of Wernigerode from Friday the 6th until Friday the 13th. Wernigerode is the main starting point of the line and is where the main shed and loco facilities are. The main line goes to the top of the Brocken, the highest peak in the Harz mountains and is also the highest peak of Northern Germany at 3,743ft above sea level. Half way along the main line is the station of Drei Annen Hohne which is a junction station with one line going to the Brocken and one to Eisfelder Talmühle, another junction station with lines going to Nordhausen Nord and Quedlinburg. The line to Quedlinburg has two junctions at Stiege where trains can be caught to Hasselfelde and Alexisbad where trains can be caught to Harzgerode. The whole network in total is 87 miles (140km).
This video includes the linside and general non-onboard videos I took during my stay.
Locos featured in this video are:
- DR Class 99.23 2-10-2s nos.99 7234, 99 7239, 99 7243, 99 7237, 99 236 & 99 7235.
- DR Class V 100 no.199 861
- DRG Class 99.22 2-10-2 no.99 222
- NWE Class 99.590 0-4-4-0 no.99 5902
- Railbus no.187 017
Thought I'd do something a bit different and put the shots in order of where they were taken on the line, in ascending and descending order.
Wernigerode:
- 99 7234 departs on the 09:10 to the Brocken (07/04/12)
Wernigerode Westerntor:
- 199 861 departs in the snow with the 16:25 from Wernigerode (07/04/12)
- 99 7239 crosses the road on the 10:25 from Wernigerode (12/04/12)
Wernigerode Hochschule Harz:
- 99 222 arrives and departs, running on the road on the 09:10 from Wernigerode. The people waving were friends of ours who were also on the trip (12/04/12)
Steinerne Renne:
- 99 7243 arrives, then barks out on the 11:55 from Wernigerode (11/04/12)
Thumkuhlenkopf Tunnel:
- 99 7234 is seen climbing up through the valley then passing before entering the 70m long tunnel on the 10:25 from Wernigerode (11/04/12)
Horse Shoe Curve:
- 99 7239 blasts past on the 09:10 from Wernigerode (11/04/12)
Drei Annen Hohne:
- 99 5902 powers up to the station giving an awesome whistle on an Easter Special from Wernigerode (08/04/12)
Eisfelder Talmühle:
- 99 7239 gives an enthusiastic run round ready for the 14:06 to Drei Annen Hohne (10/04/12)
Stiege:
- 187 017 arrives then departs on the 17:21 to Hasselfelde whilst 99 7237 waits to run round her train (10/04/12)
- 99 7237 pulls her train out then shunts it onto another line, runs round then departs on the 17:29 to Quedlinburg (10/04/12)
Drei Annen Hohne:
- 99 236 departs on the 12:55 from Wernigerode (11/04/12)
Brocken:
- A few snowy scenes then 99 7235 is seen departing on the 11:06 to Drei Annen Hohne, the reprobates at the back were part of the group, I was a bit annoyed at the time but in the end I just looked back on it and laughed (08/04/12)
Drei Annen Hohne:
- 99 7235 gives some nice whistles for the road crossing as she departs on the 13:38 from Brocken (08/04/12)
Wernigerode Westerntor:
- 199 861 is seen crossing the road in the pouring rain on the 10:44 from Drei Annen Hohne (12/04/12)
- 99 7243 is seen arriving on the 15:14 from Drei Annen Hohne (07/04/12)
- 99 5902 arrives and departs on an Easter Special from Drei Annen Hohne (07/04/12)
Wernigerode:
- 99 5902 runs light engine from the carriage sheds to the engine sheds for servicing after her day's work (07/04/12)
- Shed scenes at the end of a busy day (06/04/12)
Filmed on a Panasonic HDC-HS900 with a Panasonic VW-VMS2E Microphone
Enjoy

You did a great job of cinematography. I had the privilege of riding up in the cab with my 15-year-old son up to Brocken (the Lokführer was a distant cousin) and even shoveling in some coal. Thanks for the professional presentation!

WOW. I just spent 35 minutes being entertained by a class video. The time just flew by. What a place. The locos look and sound fantastic. And what about those whistles!! Liked the way you calmed everything down at the end with shots of the locos simmering on shed. Well done mate. All the best....Tim.

I love how you leave the camera recording after the train has passed by. Like the scene at 5:15 where the little boy goes running by, then the train comes and goes and then a car goes by and the little boy goes running back down the street.... I know how hard it is to leave the camera running for 10 seconds after the action is done. That 10 seconds can seem like forever!

Fantastic! Thanks so much for sharing. Really brings back some memories for me when I holidayed there in the 80s.

Thank you very much Tim =) Glad you enjoyed it, as did I filming it all. It is a fantastic place to be, it's very relaxed yet very efficient at the same time. You're right about those locos, the 2-10-2s especially, look very impressive =)

NOTES: The Harz Mountain Railway, actually the HSB (Harzer Smalspur Bahn translated Harz Narrowgauge Railway), now has a network of lines totalling 100 miles. The railway has three locosheds in daily use at Wernigerode; Nordhausen and Gernrode. The system is State supported, EXCEPT for the Tourist line to the famous Brocken Summit (Made famous by the classic "Faust" by Von Goethe). The railway is a proper railway company with full time employees, not some sort of Heritage or steam fan organisation. Services therefore run all year round, even when snow reaches up to 12 ft deep !!! The large 2-10-2T locos seen in many shots (weigh around 60 Tons) were built in the 1950's, and are regarded as the "standard type". They haul all normal services to the Brocken for the benefit of the tourists on that line. The modern Diesel railcars (only about 12 years old) operate most of the state supported services on routes other than the line to the Brocken. The steam locos seen hauling Green "Heritage" carriages, are reserved for specials. They are 0-4-4-0 Mallet Tanks dating from 1896-8, and now an extremely rare sight anywhere in the world. There are still 3 of these available for specials. The large centre cab diesel locos are NOT normally seen on passenger services, as they are actually a standard gauge Bo-Bo design converted to Co-Co on the metre gauge HSB, because a freight contract to supply Ballast to the Dutch railways (from a quarry near Eisfelde Talmulle) required something more powerful. Not seen in your film are the unusual Electro-Diesel tram-railcars that work some way out of Nordhausen, and inter-run over the Nordhausen town tram network. They are diesel powered on the HSB but change to overhead (1500vDC) via a connection to the metre gauge tram network in Nordhausen.

No doubt sir, you are aquainted with the you-tube Gondorian video channel which specialises in this glorious line. They are excellant films but I think this , your first effort abroad ,blows them out of the water, thanks for reminding me of my trip there last July.

You have a great eye for motives. The atmosphere and the landscape are very well captured indeed. I have no particular interest in railways - yet I watched the entire video!
