The Omega Speedmaster has remained a mainstay for watch enthusiasts for over half a century. It's not a stretch at all to call this watch an icon, a term we don't throw around loosely here. While purists may scoff at the concept of an all-black Speedmaster, it is precisely this kind of update that brings a historical icon into the realm of contemporary thinking. When presented with the opportunity to wear the new Speedmaster Dark Side of the Moon for a week, I couldn't refuse. It's a watch I had been eyeing for some time, and while it isn't exactly perfect, it certainly got me thinking and was tough to take off my wrist when the week was up. Thank you about being honest regarding the main downside to ceramic. Too often on watch forums, I see other members completely lose it when someone points out the fact you did in this vid.

+Rob Logan -- Unfortunately, Pras doesn't come across as very knowledgeable about watches -- he merely likes the usual Pateks and Audemars and the fact that they're so expensive! I like blokes who have a genuine passion for watches and have interesting narratives to tell about the watches they like. I find it very boring when all they're interested in is how expensive the watches are and about the status they imagine the watches will give them. The interview with Pras was one of the weakest interviews in the series.

Nice review and a beautiful watch. Circonium Oxide is tough material and not britlle or easy damaged. One of my front teeth and one Back Teeth are made from this material and it is as hard or even tougher than my original teeth. Im riding mountainbike and sometimes crash but my front teeth is still intact. If you can destroy this watch, you will destroy a submariner or seadweller as well.

Paid £750 for a reduced retail in 2007. A week later while I was walking past an Ernst & Jones in Oxford Str. London, they had a Pro Snoopy on a strap in a wooden case for £1700-£1800. I would had bought it if I had the cash as I was a student at the time. Not sure why is this a very good deal at 5760 second hand, does it have magical powers?

This is another marketing gimmick by Omega to generate sale from the good old speedy. Omega to me is the iconic manual speedmaster professional, not the reduced or the automatic watered down interpretation. The dark and grey side of the moon are far too expensive and this piece is not tried or tested over time like the classic speedy.

I love speedmasters but I prefer the "jumping" minutes hands instead this one like the new speedmaster caliber. Beautiful watch, but the strap could be leather or kevlar for example. Nice review.

How do you tell when winding is complete on such watches? Since popping this out turns the dials, I imagine charging is done in its native closed state manually turning (along with automatically as you wear it).

My main issue with this timepiece is that there is no lume on the chronograph hands. I have the Planet Ocean 9300 Chronograph and there is lume on all hands. This means you can read the chronograph in darkness as well as light. In my case, I use my chronograph as my 'home' time and the main watch as my local time. A simple GMT function if you travel. But ya, the Speedmasters were all about the chronograph and not being able to see this function at night, when you can in a dive watch, kind of negates it's function.

Rado technology with the ceramic case. Omega and Rado are in the Swatchgroup, they share their knowledges and collaborate for this Omega. I guess, not an expert.

Wow, is the case black all the way through though? Did they bloat the case up to make it more hip-hop? It can't go into space though because of the shards it would produce. I've always thought that all ceramic watches were sort of a fad, even a bit declasse.

I rather buy a 1000cc Triumph SpeedTriple, then kit it out, buy some sexy leathers and pay for some track days!!! This is just a crazy fucking price. Sorry for my language, but this kind of money for a watch just makes me sick people! The people at Omega must be laughing their heads off. I know I would.

dear hodinkee, depth of field is a tool that can be used to achieve affects. your use of constant shallow depth of field often obscures the thing you want to show. either use wider depth of field or focus on the point of interest! when he was talking about the crystal it was completely out of focus! we could only see the pushers.

Informative review but I had to replay it a couple of times to make sure I heard him correctly on the price ….12k. At that price point I would take the Rolex sub and add a carbon bracelet and keep the change.

I see your point. However, the price does make sense considering the materials used. Since it is made from a solid ceramic block it will be extremely scratch resistant. The balance wheel and spring are made from silicium which is much more durable and require little to no lubrication. No lubrication means more accuracy, also the escapement requires very little lubrication as well because it is a co-axel movmt. So comparing the two; years from now, the Omega will still look great and still be very accurate. Nothing wrong with Rolex, but it certainly isn't the better deal, I would say it is more or less even.

If you're going to compare it to a Rolex, compare it to the Daytona. You can almost buy 2x speedmasters for the price. Plus the Omegas movement is arguably better than Rolexes chronograph movement..

Akil Walker funny how people always compare every watch to a Rolex. You'd rather buy an overpriced Rolex that's main value comes from marketing and advertising, rather than an omega that has a better movement and is made out of a premium unique material and made through a specialised manufacturing process that justifies the price? phototristan Yes indeed, I think part of the reason that the Co-Axial movement is so expensive to service is because the escapement is rather new and is the least bit complicated.

To everyone making the “what if I drop my watch” comments.....what the hell is wrong with you? I’ve been into horology for over 30 years. In that time I’ve owned watches from a Swatch to a Patek and everywhere in between. Never once....not one time have I ever dropped a watch. I can’t for the life of me understand who these clumsy people are who are dropping their watches. If you are prone to dropping things, maybe a digital G-shock is the piece you should be looking at.

Dropping objects isn't uncommon. Also, just knocking this watch against hard objects can wreck this case. Perhaps the reason you don't drop anything is because you don't get up to much.

there is something wrong with all recent omega watches they gone in wrong direction with all this flashy finishing lines and materials, their watches have become too shiny to wear over using ceramics liquid metal now zerconium whats the next marketing buzz word.... why not just stick with higher quality stainless steel like rolex after all any watch only looks better with the age gaining vintage appearance.

As an historically significant watch, the Speedmaster Professional Moon Watch, does not need to be 'bought into the realm of contemporary thinking' because, as an icon it is timeless. I hope this ceramic trend goes away quite frankly.

Omega a darkhorse 12000+ or deep sea Rolex 11000 for the Rolex you still keep your money or a small profit if you sell mwith dark horse you pay 12000+ the first step out of the shop your Omega is worth half oh sorry you said it will shutter if falls well no thannnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnks
