Omg I used to have my own league as a kid too. I used to do all sports and I would make up my own schedule and right down scores and stats. I'd have my own playoffs and my own Stanley Cup finals, Super Bowls, World Series and NBA Championships. Oh and college too. I was huge into college. I even got my friends to join me. I was always goalie. It was so much fun. God I miss that time in my life.

I did the same last year. -Themed it after a fictional country I made -My Grandpa was like JJ and played from like the 1930s till the early 70s. -Names were based on people I knew A lot of similarities. I had a draft lotto and all that but it kinda fell apart after that.

Very imaginative, I only made teams up from the old hockey and baseball cards. Funny to think of Ozzie Smith playing goalie.

You actually inspired me to do something very similar, but not nearly on your caliber. I only have 8 teams and smaller rosters. I use dice to decide how many goals scored and use a chart/dice to decide who scores and gets assists. It's actually lots of fun! Also I would love to be in your fantasy league. Kaden Friesen, Right Wing, Power Forward, would love to be on the Winnipeg Jets. 😜

Incredible how you came up with such an idea when you were 10 years old. I've been actually thinking about doing something like this in the nhl games (creating teams, players and taking track of the results, tradings and all that)

Shannon! If you are looking to start up the league, I recommend using Franchise hockey manager 3. You can have real NHL players from any years or make your own. It even sims it for you :)

This fantasy hockey thing sounds really cool. I'd love to imagine myself as a young rookie drafted probably in the late rounds of the draft to an already contending team and sitting in their AHL team for a few years and eventually make their depth roster, etc...

Oi...I guess I can take some solace that I'm not the only fool who did this. Although I used NES's Blades of Steel to play out the actual games back in the day. [Currently working on a World Championships 1908 to date tournament as it might have been had pro players been allowed to participate pre-1976. Drafting real players that far back is a bit tricky even with the internet]

The crazy thing is that you had to do this all by hand, before the convenience of programs like Microsoft Excel.

Another source for player names is if you look at the opening credits of old Disney movies like Snow White, Cinderella and Peter Pan where you see the names of all the artists and writers before the movie actually starts.

I have a player and a backstory. Chris bigliardi, age 22 (my actual age) just signed in the off season as an undrafted college free agent by the Detroit red wings after winning the hobey baker and the natty at the university of Michigan. Really good right handed 2 way defenseman that goes from being undrafted to being a consistent Norris canidate! Lol

It would be cool to make this league and have some subscribers be gms so that it wouldn't just be your opinion going into the trades

Phone books can still be a good source for player names.

I know I'm really late watching this video but I think you should bring it back. If you want, I can send you some census/military records from different countries. Some of the names in USA/Canada might be outdated, but the foreign ones don't seem outdated. In the Russian record website I look at (because I make leagues) there are plenty of people named Sergei, Pavel, Ilya, or any name that might be. I have a Czech one. I have a Swedish one. The only major hockey country I've had trouble finding records for is Finland. I can send however many you want. Also, I was wondering if you had any suspensions or if you had anybody who resembled a certain player for Boston who shall not be named. I like that idea better than having RU-vid names that aren't real names. It makes it more realistic.

I’m doing something like this on a much smaller scale with dice. I keep track of the game scores and the standings, but not anything to do with individual players. And, since I’m an oilers fan and I have terrible luck, the oilers are the worst in the league by far.

Steve Dangle also has a podcast with a youtube channel and they had Dennis Maruk and Ken Reid on too but for around an hour, really cool to listen to you should check it out

Shane,I think you should really get back to writing,I have never seen a person as into hockey as you are and you obviously love the game and yes you really ARE the Hockey Guy,get back to writing,I use to read fictional hockey books as a child all the time and I absolutely loved those books,you could write like that or maybe write more in depth true hockey books about real hockey players but you should definitely use your passion for the game and write about it in some way,heck maybe write a book about yourself and just how much you love the game,it would probably be very good because it would be so true and honest because you really do love it,you could even call it The Hockey Guy!,I know I'd sure buy it. Bob.

I'm currently making a remake of the International hockey league I created. I have it on paper and standings and one teams roster. Hockey guy do you have any other stats I should add to make it more interesting or other things I should add? It's purely for fun and I love the stats and stuff I've made so far.
