While the new version will obviously have better effects/budget, I have to say the old one definitely took to making those scenes look darker and more grim. The shots have a darker tone in terms of the lens they use and the lack of light/colors make it look more dreary and give a feeling of despair. At least from the ones in the comparison. It's been forever since I've seen the movie.
Soemthign you need to udnerstand about horror, adding comfort makes it so much more horrifying... Seeing everyone acting the exact same in a dull muddy bwon hellscape isnt scary, seeing them all act the same in what appears to be a literal perfect world with bright colorus and perfect people... thats fucking horrifying because instantly you know something is wrong, but you dont know what, where as in the hellscape you already know whats wrong, you can SEE it, horror works betetr when you dont know whats going on, and dont see the monsters.
Well in the book, the darkness was not a physical darkness it was an emotional and psychological one. The darkness could not be seen it could only be felt. By making everything look dark and bleak it compromises what the darkness actually is.
This remake is not making everything dark which is why the first movie didn't work and the darkness was both psychical and mental and emotional which is why I think Ava's got this!
Bulilow yeah, but if you saw the full 2003 movie. The CGI really, really out dated. Like when Mrs. Whatsit changes into a rainbow creature, it gave me nightmares😱.
Byron Hurt I was a kid when I saw it and it's a childhood memory of mine. Whether it's good or not, I absolutely loved it as a kid and I'll always be nostalgic of it.
I loved the 2003 version. I'm really concerned that this new movie won't show why Meg, Charles-Wallace, and Calvin are so very special. They aren't just some school kids on an adventure.
One thing to remember for many saying the 2003 version looks bad is that it was a made for TV movie. I remember watching it and it was just okay, but I wouldn't hold the effects against it as they were actually pretty good for TV at the time.
Am i one of the only people who actually read the book and saw the original? 2018 is gonna be good but the original had some darker scenes more parallel to the book, and Charles Wallace was more convincing in the 2003. I will say a few scenes look darker in the 2018 remake and i cant wait to see rowan blanchard to be honest!!!
I too have always loved the book and the rest of the books as well. I also loved the 2003 version which Madeline L'Engle approved. I find it interesting that Disney waited until Madeline was gone to do a remake. I have the DVD of the original version.
No. I read the book many years ago and it is in my top ten from my childhood. I don't even remember it being on tv. I ran into the movie at a Target shopping for my grandkids. Except for the bad CGI it followed the story so well. The cast was stellar. Everything I felt from reading the book was there in the movie. No doubt the "science" in the movie played against the religious right who got so upset over Harry Potter. So the movie didn't get the PR that it really deserved. I am sure I loved the book and movie because it opened my imagination to a kinder, more hopeful, solar system. I remember as a child I really wished it was real because my life back then was just as dark and dreadful. I wasn't able to see my father either so this book really touched my heart so well. I am on wait and see ....
I read it a long time ago when i was in middle school and saw the movie. I enjoyed it very well, I'm not fan of remakes. But having oprah as Ms.whatsit is awesome, I hope she tries to be close to the character. My only problem would be it doesn't have the same feel.
i just finished reading the book with my class. my teacher and the other 6th grade teacher promised us the our feild trip would be to go see that movie!
Actually the author really disliked the 2003 version. When asked in an interview with Newsweek if the film "met her expectations", L'Engle said, "I have glimpsed it. ... I expected it to be bad, and it is."
I just have to say I'm disappointed in the remake of A Wrinkle in Time. I'm also disappointed how many youtube reviewers even knew that it was a remake that they had an old version to this movie that I find has more character and depth even if the graphics arent as advanced. The child actor who played Charles Wallace in the new one wasn't right for this part. It was just a giant mess. I'm going to stop ranting now before I start picking everything apart.
After hearing Oprah interviewed I didn't even bother with the theatrical film. She had no idea what the book was about. The scenes they showed looked horrific. Not only did they ruin a perfectly good story, they totally changed the moral of the book.
I just watched the 2018 remake on Netflix. To me, it felt too rushed as if Disney had a short timeline. I also had to have CC on as the of the spoken words were too quiet. The 2003 remake (twice as long) had a lot more scenes that followed the book better in my opinion.
After watching both versions but not having read the book, my first reaction is, this must be a darned difficult book to render into a screenplay. I was hoping the new version would exceed the old where the old one was weakest: the visual depiction of the IT planet. Instead, there was hardly any time spent on this aspect of the story. The old version handled it much more coherently. The lead characters are cast as younger in the new version, which I didn't think worked, and the acting in general wasn't as good. I did appreciate the fuller back story provided in the new version, and the Murray's house is the true star of the show. Too bad that's the case. And the Happy Medium. What's up with that? Way back in 2003, when W was president and values voters held sway, Disney had the moxie and wit to have the Happy Medium be a gender ambiguous character. Not so in 2018. The new Happy Medium is resoundingly male and hetero. Huh?
I strongly recommend reading or listening to the book. It makes things much clearer - and the kids are younger, like in the new movie. I found it easier to follow the plot watching the new movie, but then I was younger when I watched the 2003 movie & in a different headspace. People are right, these are both movies adapted from the book, and yes, it is a difficult book to adapt to visual & time-limited format and keep the essentials!
Cupcake Productions I saw an interview that said Mrs Who's quotes are definitely there. However they have been updated. They specifically said, " J-Zee updated. That kind of scared me.
I honestly prefer the new neighborhood in 2018. Sure the old one was dark and dreary, but the purpose of the neighborhood is to be the epitome of "normal". Dreariness isn't exactly normal. In the new version, everything is bright and what many would consider to be "normal." It doesn't take away from the eerie factor though, infact I think it is insanely eerie how unaturally perfect it seems.
Remakes suck most of the time so I'm very excited to see how this movie turns out EDIT: I was right. It’s just another forgettable Disney movien. It wasn’t a bad movie though, but I prefer the 2003 version better.
She was shown briefly when it showed all the planets the Dad went to in a vision with the Happy Medium. However the kids do not visit the planet sadly.
Side-by-Side series directory here: mattskuta.com/sbs/ Comment to help me choose my next side-by-side: Psycho (1960/1998) Cabin Fever (2002/2016) The Great Gatsby (1974/2013) Open Your Eyes (1997)/Vanilla Sky (2001) Romeo and Juliet (1936/1968/1996/2013) Animal Farm (1954/1999) The BFG (1989/2016) Avatar: The Last Airbender(2003)/The Last Airbender (2010) Cinderella (1950/2015) Clash of the Titans (1981/2010) Nosferatu (1922)/Nosferatu the Vampyre (1979) The Shining (1980/1997) Ghost in the Shell (1995/2017) The Jungle Books (1994/2016)
The special effects were bad in the old one because A it was 2003, and B it was a telemovie, ABC and Disney where not going to spend millions to make a kids movie looks really good on television, especially not at the time, the visuals have not aged well; but i think it is a great movie nonetheless
She wasn't black in the story. It could change the dynamics of the story. But not just that. Already I can see examples that were added in that were not in the story. Nothing wrong with another version of the story. It would be nice to see a movie based upon the book as the author intended it to be as well. Since yes, the special effects were poor even by 2003 standards. But the story didn't get lost in them if you had read the books you knew what they were trying to portray. I mean Alice in Wonderland is...interesting? Better in the new version? Sort of Willy Wonka to me? Now take the Beauty and the Beast Movie. I don't know how they did it but they actually followed the original movie fairly well. I liked it more then I thought I would so here's hoping at least it will be a good story if not the story that I want to see.
Lex Everyone prefers original over remake because it is the one they grew up with even if the visuals were bad at the time, my comment was a joke just saying.
2003 seems more playful, the newer one seems to take it south way too seriously and that’s why I was kind of strange. The colors I love the casting choice was OK, but I think it’s just the fact I took themselves way too seriously compared to the 2003 version where they had more fun with it. And in my opinion the 2003, man with the red eyes looks way better, it looks more creepy scary looking
Gotta note, they fucking NAILED those scenes with the neighborhood kids and the room where Dad was stuck. Gave me tinglessssss, looked so eerie and pretty.
never read the book never saw the 2003 ..wow this just makes go get the book or either order the 2003 version ... I can tell the 2003 is much darker this new version looks too Disney rainbows and cupcakes ...
They don't try to make it rainbows and cupcakes.. On the other planet, they try to make it look as if everything is okay, that everything is great, and that's to trick people. It isn't a jolly happy movie, and it especially isn't a jolly happy book either. Plus I would highly recommend reading the book, you might understand more, as it explains a lot.
in the book cover, who is the pegasus and who is the blue face in the ball? i haven't read the book or watched the films, just remember seeing the book cover a long time ago.

The first time I saw the 2003 version was in 2007 during my early years at University. MAN!!! That was a long time ago. I hope the new one I'd really good and will become a treasure at the Disney Vault.
Penny C yes! I completely agree with you. It feels wrong to butcher classic this badly. Sure the effects are going to be better but it looks like a freaking fairytale story.
Oh my god..I fell in love with this💕 I've already read the book and seen the 2003 movie but the new one looks amazing and I'm dying to see it:) it'll be out right on my birthday so I'm super happy about that xD This is the best gift for me xDD can't wait👌💜
As a fan of the book, take my advice. Skip the 2018 epic disaster and watch the tv movie. It is much better because the people who made it understood what the book was actually about.
2003 version seems closer to the book.... scenes are darker, more serious, actors are... uh... Also, the technology and CGI and graphics are all trash. Love the fact that they chose Sweet Dreams to be the main song though.
I want a behind the scenes documentary of what made Ava Duvernay screw this up so much. The 2003 made for tv version had so much more heart and a more complete plot, the executives must not have given her enough time or maybe foisted popular actors on her. Alfre Woodard put so much love into her Mrs. Whatsit and the new one was just kinda mean and had a weird crush on the happy medium who wasn't nearly as genderqueer as the first one.
The 2018 version is amazing. I saw the original and it was good too i liked the original and i feel like im gonna like the new one too so both i guess.
