It’s not common to be irregular for 10 years without a hormone, weight change , or long term illness to be at the root. I am sure they do not want girls to assume and go 10 years without checking with a Dr. I am sure it is possible to be irregular without health issues however 2 to 3 years is the average time before it regulates.

According to the law, it would still be unfair for me to let that out on them. But I think these people might be responsible for the cramps. They're worse some times, than others. Why is everyone saying this was an informative video? It doesn’t even mention what might be the single most important thing to prepare them for - the fact that they will bleed. If I saw this before I got my first period without other information, I’d be terrified when I started seeing blood. Pads, tampons or any other sanitary product aren’t brought up at all (though tampons were pretty controversial in the 1940s, so that’s not surprising). Sure, this has scientific information, but that’s not what kids need to know before they’ve had a period - they need to know how to deal with it, and they need to know they aren’t about to die. I’m not saying it’s completely useless, but it definitely doesn’t do nearly a good enough job at explaining menstruation, so I don’t know why people are acting like it is. It’s dated at best.

I had something similar when I got my first period at the age of 11! I thought that periods are not a few days every month, I thought periods will take place every day during all my life until I die. I felt myself so so badly :(

There is no shame in being a biological woman. It's attractive and sexy. The body scents we have are a biologically important part of attracting people. Women are attracted to men who have an immune system that most differs to theirs, so their children have a better chance of a stronger immune system). The human body is extraordinary. Especially the complexity of a woman's body! Some women don't have that option. It's something to be appreciative of. If you think any of your bodily scents don't smell right, and it's not just a matter of personal preference, it's best to see a doctor in case you have an infection. Having a woman's body is certainly an ongoing challenge! But personally, I would rather be a woman than anything else!

It's literally blood exiting the body. Even the body thinks it gross and unneeded, hence the reason it is shed every month. Yes, as gross as they are (like pooping and peeing), it is natural, and the idea overall, is beautiful. Still, the pain, the worrying if you're going to bleed through your pants, the mood swings, etc., etc. can be quite annoying, inconvenient, and yes, gross.

I had to educate my husband as a young wife what it was all about. I taught my kids in age appropriate terms by the time they were 5 yrs old; and the birds and the bees talk too. The same is true of 2010's sex ed, sadly (U.S.). No mentions of consent, stds (despite where I live being an std capital!) a lot of forms of birth control, periods (at all!), etc. Just 2 diagrams to fill out, useless "what does this part do" questions, and a video of a woman giving birth. But sometimes, the hormones zooming around your body are just going to make you sick (physically, mentally, emotionally, a combination- so talk to your doctor so you don’t have to deal with feeling shitty. I have PMDD. My period would pull me down into a near suicidal mindset every month. Fortunately there is treatment for this, so I am still alive 👍. I do wish that any and all of the videos explaining menstruation would show some vaguely accurate representation of the nasty blood and tissue. It’s not white! It’s not blue! It’s red and brown and black and gross. 😖

It’s a worthy skill to not let your emotions control you. Like the video said, you can feel them, but that doesn’t mean you deserve to take it out on others. Part of growing up means learning self discipline so you can be a well functioning part of a community. Expecting others to put up with you while you don’t try to improve yourself is childish.

I quite agree! I don't remember which film we 6th-grade girls were shown in 1983, but this one does stand the test of time. It's all just good, sensible, and reassuring advice narrated by a soothing and wise-sounding lady. I suppose it ought to be shown a year or two sooner now, since the average age of first menstruation is now around eleven.

@@Seashellsbytheseashore21 I was always told that it's normal for women to feel pain during their period and that some women just have heavier periods than others and that its completely normal for things to suck for that week of the month, so I would just suffer in silence because I was told that its what everyone feels and figured I should just put up with it. I wasn't told that there's a limit to how painful/heavy things should be until I was in my early 20s when I was crying to my mum about how the painkillers don't work and she told me how I'm genetically prone to uterine problems from at least 3 different lineages from my immediate family, which lead me to getting an appointment with a great doctor who actually listened to what I had to say and got me on hormone pills and an examination at the hospital. Idk if its because talking about periods and women's health is still a little bit taboo socially speaking or something, but a lot of girls don't get warned about these things in their regular sex ed classes and don't find out until later in life that there's a limit to how much pain/bleeding you should be dealing with.

@@Seashellsbytheseashore21 The repression has softened to some degree now, but you have to understand that until recently, menstruation was so taboo that mothers barely talked about it to their daughters, let alone physicians openly giving guidance to the community. Therefore, many girls had no idea what degree of pain during a period is "normal" (the actual answer is "virtually none"), so they silently endured levels of pain that should have merited a gynecological appointment or a hospital stay. (Endometriosis is a common culprit in period pain.)

@@dsch0 "virtually none" makes me so sad. I got up the courage to talk but all they can do is recommend yoga, acupuncture, "have you tried herbs?" I get that there's no cure for endometriosis and pain medication is bad for the body, but...help. I just wanted to throw my voice in this discussion too. Been in extreme pain for 20 hours, just a couple days to go. Then I can plan for the next pain. And next.

In the school I went to the kids made unpleasant jokes about periods and I was devastated when my first one arrived. I was bullied because of it.

really? i was devastated! made worse by when all the boys made fun of us after they had health class. they would squirt ketchup on our pants and point red lasers at us and yell YOU GOT YOUR PERIOD! i wanted to die, i really did. i thought my life was over.

Back then honey, everyone was more mature than they are now. I heard my niece getting bullied because she started her period. She's 11 by the way. Sad how both females and males make fun of periods, but back then we were so happy we were finally becoming true women 🥺. I miss those days 😭
