Many many years ago I had the opportunity to do something similar in france. Leaving was so hard but now, almost 30yrs later I look at what we achieved, the strengths and skills we found and learnt and look back on that time with nothing but the best memories. Like everything else in life, the seasons change and we move forward. Best of luck for your future, I hope we get to see some of it here. Thank you for sharing the past year or so, it has been great to follow.

Old door close but new doors alway open . There are so many old homes in need of some love in the USA , some even look like small Chateaus I see them on Instagram. But what yes Visa's in most countries are tricky . And unless u brought a Chateau and intend to start retreats up or BnB s , getting a Visa for just working unless u get a job offer or u a Doctor , it's very hard . But look forward to your next adventure ❤❤ I feel for u both u worked so very hard but I hope someone sees that place and keeps up the work u started . ❤❤

We live in England and have had our house in France for eleven years, at first I felt it was a great adventure, my husband still loves it and visits a couple of times a year without me, I will visit only once or twice because for me it’s like a busman’s holiday, more of the same cooking, cleaning, gardening but without our daughter and my two fur babies. The floors are cold, the loo is downstairs as it’s a stone house we have to have a fire going in the living room and the kitchen and that’s in the summer, we’ve been burgled, and because of the amount of land that we have and because we’re English the farmer who cuts our grass charges us more than the French because they think we are very rich and we are not! The French I find in a few instances very snitty even though we speak passable French. So the dream people is great but the reality is keep your money and use it to line your own pockets and if you can afford it travel the globe do it rather than pitting your wits against foreign red tape and believe me they will squeeze every penny they can out of you. I want to sell the house but we keep it because my husband is still totally in love with his dream and I would never force him to do anything he didn’t want to do so we compromise.

Watching this time lapse made me want to cry. Good times and not-so-good times. Your hard work over the past year, in a winter and spring of drenching rain, was something to admire - from reclaiming wood, to putting in recycled windows and doors (beautiful), to putting in insulation, to digging out (tons!) animal poop, to seeing chubbier cats walking with you on your land.Waiting for your next 'dump!' I like your style and "voice" in film editing. This made me sad, but I think it's incredibly useful to put out there for others who are ready to launch similar dreams. So many Americans are moving to the EU w/ no real clue of the incredible bureaucracy there. I have friends, who are natives, living in France & Italy that complain and throw their hands in the air over all the insane hurdles to do even simple/logical things. You are not alone. I do hope you find a new place soon and welcome back home new neighbor (I'm in DC). 🙂

Thank you, and we agree that we felt this was useful to anyone thinking of doing the same thing! The bureaucracy is definitely alot.... for example We got cell phones in the US in 1 hour - in France it took us 3 trips to the cell phone place, each time needing a new piece of paper, and even a letter from the MAYOR!!! no joke! You both did a wonderful job on this video, wrapping up what would have been an excrutiatingly difficult chapter into a perspective that insists on the positive aspects, treasuring the experience and finding that silver lining. You also took ownership for what did not work and that speaks highly of the type of people you are. That's real life and, we all deal with this to one degree or another at some point. There is not one person here who hasn't. We were all rooting for you, however it was not meant to be and as they say 'when you argue with reality you loose, but only 100% of the time'. I held off and chose not to read comments until the end, fearing there would not be a happy ending. I hope you both have no regrets. Het bericht dat jullie teruggaan naar Amerika heeft ons toch wel getroffen. Vanaf het begin hebben we jullie gevolgd bij de restauratie van jullie boerderij. Vol bewondering en interesse keken we elke keer naar de vooruitgang die jullie boekten. Wat een doorzettingsvermogen hebben jullie laten zien, geweldig. Ook de vindingrijkheid van oplossingen zoeken was fantastisch. Wat een teleurstelling moet het voor jullie zijn, om wat jullie met veel inzet voor elkaar hebben gekregen, te moeten verkopen. En toch weer tonen jullie inzet, flexibiliteit en vooral liefde voor elkaar, door de boel bij elkaar te pakken en weer aan een nieuw avontuur te beginnen. Wij zijn 71 en 72 jaar en wonen veilig in in dorpje in Nederland. Jullie kunnen later zeggen dat je alles uit het leven hebt gehaald, dat je je droom bent gevolgd en dat je een mooie voetafdruk achterlaat op deze wereld. Ils ont eu du courage et travaillé très dur. Quel dommage de tout quitter a cause des paperasseries exigées....je suis navrée pour eux et triste de ne plus pouvoir attester de leurs progrès ..Je vis dans la region.

You guys have been an inspiration. You've demonstrated incredible courage, conviction and determination to just graft! Normandy threw everything at you, and you just soldiered on. As you know we're in a very similar boat here, and I totally understand the struggles you've been through. If we'd have been hit by the visa hammer we wouldn't be here either. So sorry that you had to return to US. We started our journey in 2009 and it took 8 years for us to finally be able to make the permanent move from UK to France. Just before the Brexit rules came into force. Like you, and many others, we had a bumpy journey along the way. But finally we were able to settle in to our beloved reno project.
