I for one love the fact you need to rematch the Elite 4 after Kanto. I always felt like that needed to be the case with the idea of "OK we know you are the champion of Johto, but now you have to prove you have what it takes to represent Kanto too". Also great as a last challenge and training before the very high level Red fight.

I know Gen 2 is your first and favorite Gen, but as a Gen 3 kid I really hope we get a romhack of this quality for Pokemon Emerald someday!

Maybe this could complete your Rival's story: When you finish the Elite Four for the second time, instead of fighting Lance again, you fight your Rival. His story goes full circle and he changes his ways, and becomes strong enough to be the Champion. The second to last hurdle is your Rival throughout the game.

It's mad cathartic, as a hack designer, to see people react to what you've done. I do difficulty hacks for an online reality game and I'm always waiting on bated breath to see how they react to the curveballs I throw.

Gyarados isn't flying he's swimming through the air. All jokes aside though I guess it makes sense because Gyarados is always hovering in his 3D models in games.

Something I'd love to see is a side patch where EV gains are disabled for the player, since your pokemon quality ends up so much higher than the enemy's. An optional hard mode type thing.

Unless the mechanic has been removed in this romhack, badge boosts give the player a bigger advantage than stat experience imo. *Especially* in Gen 2. For those that don't know, in Gens 1-3 certain badges give a small but significant, (12,5% in G1-2, 10% in G3) invisible boost to a stat for the whole party. The first badge usually raises Attack for example. HP is the only stat unaffected by the end. In Gen 2 specifically, every badge also gives a 12,5% dmg boost to all moves of the badge's type specialty. This makes Flying and Normal type mons especially good for Gen 2 playthroughs as they get a beefed up Attack stat and STAB moves early on.

I've been playing this rom so much I will forget it's a remade and believe it's the original with how everything is.

It’s funny how much dialogue reveals/changes in this game. I just noticed that in the dialogue before Lance he says he’s got a Zapdos, but JRose just speeds by 😂😂

I think my favorite change is having CUT buffed and as a bug move! I taught it to me cyndaquil and used it against Red's Mewtwo! Loved it so much!

I think that touching up the Elite Four rematches in the Kanto update would be a great idea It’s not bad currently, but it’s obvious that it’s just kind of there for padding with no passion behind it

I've been having an absolute blast playing this Rom lately. Thank you so much for giving us the Crystal experience we should've gotten originally.

I hardcore Nuzlocked this and set and decided the level cap for Red would be his second strongest Pokemon at level 77. Then I saw on the Google sheet that Pikachu would be at level 93 and panicked. Fortunately, I had saved my Celadon Game Corner encounter in case I needed it. The Wobbuffet I got there took out Pikachu, Mewtwo, and Destiny Bond killed Snorlax making the rest of the fight easy. It was a super fun game to Nuzlocke!

I think you hit the sweet spot and not sure if the stat experiences or Kanto difficulty is needed, JRose's playthrough is very much how I would've done a run and felt.

I am playing version 1.1 and those buffs on some pokemons are awesome. My ace is Ariados and I am having such a good time with twineedle. I was thinking about letting him be a agility baton passer, but just using him for offense is a blast that I decide to let him just be an attacker (and thats only possible due to this romhack!). Thanks for this romhack its the best gen2 experience. Cant say that enough 100% goated. Cant wait for the kanto update and all that jazz

Absolutely love what you’ve done with Pokemon Crystal. Pokemon Crystal holds a special place in my heart, it’s my favourite Pokemon game of all-time. But as you’ve discussed, it unfortunately had its glaring issues from being too easy, the level curve being non-linear after a point lack of pokemon availability. It’s incredible what you’re doing here. You’re well and truly modding Crystal into what it should have been. Your design choices are so well thought out. I can’t wait to give this a jam. One thing from me - I hope you buff teams in the Battle Tower to make it way more epic! And I know you dont wanna mess with the OG mechanics too much but wish that pokemon didnt have to be an exact level like it needed to be to enter the Battle Tower

I loaded up the ROM last night and played up to Azalea with Chikorita as a starter (for the first time in forever) and I'm LOVING IT! Almost wiped to Eto due to lack of defensive switch ins to Smoochum and did wipe once to the head grunt. I have to say, this is the first time I've been excited to play a game blind in years. I'm exploring, catching most things I see, running an Onix beacuse I can FINALLY get a Steelix (!) and using interesting strats to try to compensate for being underleveled. Thank you and your team for the work and I look forward to continuing through the game!

Might be a fever dream, but would love to see the romhack on a cartridge! Pokémon is most fun when played on a gameboy SP :)

I didn't fully agree with all Jrose's criticism, but it was awesome that he played the game and let more people see it. Main thing I disagree with is I think he said he wishes the Team Rocket section was just... removed. Whether you like it or not, that's just a big chunk of Gen 2 pokemon, and you've said you want to stay true to Gen 2. Also you did some cool stuff with the Rocket Storyline that I think he just skimmed over, so that's on him. At the end of the day though, I think he mostly appreciated the rom hack and I think that showed by the end.

me and my older brother are doing a soullink of this rom hack and my brother has 4 flying types on his team which is funny but yeah we feel the difference in the game even from the beginning it's a nice refresh. We're currently about to do the morty fight and we are worried cause we know morty base can be a little scary but now with the changes we both know the games gonna get difficult for us. keep up the great work.

Jrose is what drove me to this romhack. Played around 20 runs since hearing about it and... Yeh. I think you nailed your goal of making a more even, viable game while keeping to the crystal vibe. Anyway, commenting to drive engagement.

@14:55 one thing you got to know about jrose is he loves kadabra more then anything else, and he will not evo it unless he absolutely has to. it is on all his promo stuff for a reason, like its his banner, his pfp, even one of his best runs of gen1 was kadabra.

Love the hack. The “vanilla+” feel lands great. Would love to see the guide document expanded to show where rare held items can be found/thieved. Things like light ball and leftovers in particular. Perhaps you could also turn off natural stat exp gain, spread some vitamins throughout the game (could be both regions or just kanto) to further reward exploration/completion, and give late game trainers and maybe even some specific, uncommon trainer classes various stat exp spreads!

I have a small suggestion: Make an NPC dialogue that explains early on in the game that there's a rumor that all the legendary bird pokemon have been caught by some powerful trainers. That way it won't be as gamebreaking to see them being used in battle later

So crazy that I used to watch SmithPlays back in peak zombies era and since he stopped uploading on his main I hadn’t watch him for a while and then all of the sudden another completely unrelated RU-vidr in Jrose makes a video on a SmithPlays romhack and I come full circle to find he has a full on Pokémon channel…how did I not know?? I loved watching the occasional SmithPlays Pokémon stream so I’m so happy to see he has a full on Pokémon channel. It’s the best.

I think a good way to approach the Kanto Elite Four would be to have Lorelie and Agatha replace will and Logan. It mixes it up enough and provide some additional challenges.

So much fun! Amazing work! Another cool idea to buff the Elite Four is to have your rival show up once you are INSIDE the room of the first Elite Four. So you can't go back to heal your pokemon for free. Also, buff their pokemon with full EVs for the second round. Probably Kanto Gym Leaders could use that buff as well.

I started playing the game after watching Jrose's vid so I wasn't blind on my first playthrough but it's so much fun! It had a Pokemon Stadium 2 feel when it comes to the battles but it never felt unfair at any point. My team was Typholsion, Primeape, Gyarados, Gengar, Victreebel, and Steelix even though I think I was a bit over leveled at the Elite 4 since I got everyone to level 55 they were still tough battles and the Kanto gyms really gave me a run for my money as well as the Round 2 E4. Gaining levels honestly wasn't that bad I think I only grinding like twice, once before Morty and again before the E4 though I think at one point I was wishing I had a Lucky Egg to use but that was before I reread the docs and realized Chansey could be found on the route before Ice Path still I think trying to get a Lucky Egg that way would've taken longer than just battling wild Pokemon normally, I was going to suggest maybe have a static Lucky Egg in the overworld or on a trainer's pokemon that you could use thief on but then I thought that might ruin the balance of the game in some way. But yeah this is a great game y'all made and I'm looking forward to future updates

Proud to say i beat Whitney with a lv 19 Bayleef solo 😎 Granted I seem to be with the understanding that X items are not purchasable, so i used them in honor of Chad the Chikorita having his moment to shine against the hardest boss in the whole game.

I have played Legends twice now, with Chikorita and Cyndaquil. I played Gold the first time on Halloween in 2000 when I was 13 and to me, that was the best Pokemon experience to be had. Legends is as close as possible to ideal Gen 2. Great work

I have an idea for the implementation of rival more in game: 1. Lance's student. Knowing that Giovanni and Lance cooperated before in game, Silver accidently saw them together, and he asks what's the deal he had with his father. after victory road, Silver might ask Lance to be his teacher, as strongest adult trainer, and someone who had connections with his father. In the first rematch Lance could reintrduce Silver and start fight between rivals 2. Battle tower. Similarly how Wally was superboss in ORAS, it is possible to implement something similar. After some score would be gotten, Silver will appear, saying that he wants to become stromger and bond with them, he trains there and asks to fight against him 1 last time 3. He could appear as superboss, either after player's win over 16 badges, or after winning over Red. When going to E4 building again, for rematch, he will appear, saying he wants to battle you, like Barry in Gen 4

Hey man, really appreciate your work here, i am actually playing through this mod and enjoying the hell out of it. Would consider swapping Lance's teams composition between its first encounter and its rematch? In my mind it makes more sense for him to have a Zapdos when he is fighting you as the Kanto champion

This makes me really want to check out this rom hack, I put in countless hours into gold/crystal when i was a kid. So many memories. I want to also beat it using only my favorites but that means picking Chikorita lol

I feel like for the Rocket gauntlet, you can use some of Crystal Kaizo’s strategy of increasing difficulty. Trainer gauntlets and the like to increase difficulty, maybe have someone steal the trainer’s bag between two decently difficult fights. The fights themselves aren’t hard but I think showing how underhanded and desperate Team Rocket gets through gameplay would be an interesting addition that would make it a memorable set piece.

Currently playing your game and its really nice. Only thing i dont love is that you changed prices for repels but youve probably had some reason for that. Will you also make a version of another game? Would be lovely ❤ Thanks for the work you and your people have put into this. Worth it

I started this a week ago and have been playing on and off. Loving it so far at 7 badges in.

This Romhack is beyond excellent. I screwed up downloading the 1.1 patch and lost my entire file and had to restart from the beginning and I didn't care. The game is THAT good. You and everyone who worked on this one did a phenomenal job.

I started playing the rom hack and omg is it hard for me. I love it how challenging it is for me as im opposed from using my favorites but picking some that makes my team stronger. Tho i wished they pay you more in trainer battles

I've been having a blast playing this romhack. It is a ton of fun and super challenging.

I didn't have any hard counters for Chuck and without them, he is a BEAST. It took me over 6 tries to finally beat him and I had to use items.

You could probably change the 1st floor of mahogany hideout to a more fun quick minigane like a voltorb drops from the ceiling like xy encounters and does 5-10% damage across the team forcing you to either back track once but repeat playthroughs you know the magic route. Then you face a stronger more interesting 2nd floor. Or redesign the security camera route to have some metal gear sneak techniques or a secret wall to bypass it if you know how. Maybe let people go to red but give the player the option to do the rematches and have oak say mt silver is tought you may wish to rematch the E4 to prepare. I think you have mentioned you have bigger interests in expanding kanto to be more interesring in the future

Love the Yakuza 0 and Persona 5 music man. So good. Quick question. Would it be possible to play the physical special split? Thats the one thing that I can't stand about the pre Gen 4 games.

For stat experience, I feel like it might make sense to give boss battles stat experience that's approximately scaled with how much stat experience the player has usually earned at that point. Late game battles have a ton of stat exp, while earlier battles have almost none. This would probably allow you to scale back some of the opposing trainer levels in the late game while also giving some creative freedom in how to stat enemy pokemon. Maybe Koga has a lot of EVs in to special defense, Lance is maxed out on physical attack, Jasmine focuses on physical defense, etc. This would be a somewhat big change from base crystal, but by decreasing boss trainer levels, you can keep the enemy stats similar to how they are now, while using stat exp to give more personality to opposing trainers. The biggest downside here is that it might make it harder to predict some damage ranges, but it might also make the tough trainers feel more special and give them a bit of an x factor that differentiates them from regular trainers. It also would help the player with estimating where their levels should be to be equal to opposing pokemon, since the levels are a bit of a lie in the late game with the current system. Also, one last change I propose is to change dragon to a physical type. Outrage isn't really used very much throughout the game, so it wouldn't change a ton for the player, but it would be a big buff to Lance and make his dragonites even more intimidating.

That was my reaction, complete surprise, when I saw that JRose played Crystal Legacy. If I'm not wrong, Scott's Thought will also play it in any moment soon. To be fair, it really deserves it, it's an awesome romhack!

After playing Crystal Legacy, i gotta say I understand why gamefreak really dumbed it down. 1. We were ALL kids. No adults played the game. 2. Nobody knew anything about game mechanics until a decade later. 3. It was still new and very rushed in development. After all the struggle as an adult eho understands pokemon, i understand why the originsl game couldnt be this perfect. I couldnt beat the game back then (becauseni couldnt figure out what to do) and i definitely wouldnt have gotten far as a kid. They guaranteed that i played it more. However, i love this bersion and i was always go straight to this as an adult 😁 thank you for everything.

That Snorlax should run Crunch Rest Snore Earthquake Since snore is physical in gen 2, it'll be backed by Snorlax's massive attack stat plus STAB. Crunch is for the ghost types and earthquake is coverage for steel types plus the 4 other types ground can hit super effective damage against.

I’d love to see all 3 of the Johto starters find their way in to the second run of the Elite Four. Fraligatr being a crocodile/alligator isn’t a million miles away from a dragon so could go on Lance’s team for one of the Dragonite? Meganium with some really annoying strats could work for Koga or Karen. I’m just not sure where you fit Typhlosion in - maybe Bruno? I just think Red serves as a really nice link back to Gen 1 really celebrating the best from Kanto, so giving the 3 Johto starters a chance to shine just before might be really nice. An Oak or even Elm battle would be pretty cool too. I know Oak was kinda a scrapped idea in Gen 1 and you can dig the code out with glitches/exploits. Might be nice to bring that idea back if possible. Also one last thing, is there any scope for Mew and Celebi being in the game? I can’t remember if you mentioned them in your big summary video. Love the whole idea, can’t wait to ply it myself. Keep up the great work :)
