Finally US Tests The New Super A10 Warthog
The A-10 Warthog or Thunderbolt II is the most legendary aircraft throughout decades of combat operations. In 2014, the USAF saw the first attempt to completely retire the A-10 to save $3.7 billion across the five-year future-year defense program and another $500 million in cost avoidance for upgrades. Bet, they wanted to support new F-35 squadrons. Fast forward to 2022 and the A-10 is not only here to stay, but it’s getting a raft of upgrades to keep it relevant for years to come. So let’s find out what features make the “Hawg's” tusks sharp.

The cannon doesn't "sit in front of the aircraft." That's just where the rounds exit. The cannon basically is the entire aircraft. Infantry has a fun saying, "If you hear an A-10's gun, it's shots weren't meant for you." The rounds hit the ground before the sound hits observers.
@jerrylourice2352
@jerrylourice2352 2 года назад
that remark isn't due to the round's speed, rather the lack of accuracy or any real guidance systems for the gun within the aircraft. It's an incredibly unreliable ground attack weapon, and while an effective application of a large-load automatic ballistic device being used for ground attack factor - it's extremely far from an effective weapons system for close/combat air support in the modern era. Source: I am an infantryman and would prefer rotor wing assets over literally any a-10 trash. People who froth for the a-10 are mistaken and have likely never operated alongside one.

4:45 - Nope, the A-10 is not a "Dogfight Winner", nor is it a dogfighting aircraft. It's big, heavy, and was designed for close ground support. Yes, it can carry sidewinder missiles and shoot them from far away but it has little chance against your garden variety MiGs that are much faster, more maneuverable, and can evade or engage the A-10 from far away.
@kinglouiev9530
@kinglouiev9530 2 года назад
The A-10 is actually more maneuverable, but is no match for the speed of the MiGs. Maneuverability is actually not always the deciding factor in a dogfight. Hell a MiG 29 could shoot down an A-10 without even dogfighting it, because of Radar & Missiles.
@TesterAnimal1
@TesterAnimal1 2 года назад
@@kinglouiev9530 Not according t the Grim Reapers channel. They run simulations of all kinds of scenarios. They ran an interesting one in which they pitted A10s against Spitfires. They had slightly better straight line speed than the Spitfires. But if they got into manoeuvring, the Spitfires could out turn them easily. Of course I have no idea how accurate their software modelling is. It was interesting resting though.

@rogergoodman8665
@rogergoodman8665 2 года назад
SkullAngel002 : Your right about the A-10 not being a dogfighter, however a lot of people do think it's just a regular fighter jet. It was never designed for dogfighting. Some fault it for being slow but it was designed that way on purpose so it could linger on target without the need for 5 miles of airspace to turn around for another pass! It was designed for close air ground support & also to attack ground convoys or trains. It was also the most feared weapons platform we had in both Gulf wars & in Afghanistan. When the enemy heard those distinctive half screeching half screaming engines coming in, they either surrendered, went underground immediately or died. That's how much they feared that cannon. I grew up around the now closed Willow Grove N.A.S in Pennsylvania. The A-10 was the fighter wings primary aircraft. I saw them everyday almost for 25 years. Sometimes they were so low you could see the pilot clearly...And that cannon stood out like Pinocchio's nose!

And if I recall correctly, small portions of them have been flown back to base and landed safely. A good look at the pictures of said aircraft will leave one saying "there is no way that aircraft could fly and no way the pilot could have walked away from that", yet both are true.

As a Brit, well said. I to think that the USAF, rather than repeatedly trying to find ways and excuses to get rid of them over past four or so decades, should have started preliminary R&D work to procure a 21st century version of the aircraft, with all of the latest advancements in avionics, sensors and sensory fusion techniques built in to a new design whilst retaining its core legendary firepower and survivability qualities to produce a 21st century networked and fully integrated can opener! The new wings are replacements for the aging wings of the existing planes. I'd imagine a number of the old ones have some patched bullet holes from Bosnia/gulf wars too. :) They are an improvement in materials and design a bit, but that was not the main intent. The current aircraft have wings that are showing signs of material fatigue, some to the point of being at the end of their useful service life. The honeycomb underlay isn't a new innovation, it's been in use on military aircraft since the 1960's. This aircraft has long outlived it's original mission and expected service life by a wide margin, but they just haven't found anything better suited for it's role yet. Much like the B-52, it just gets the job done so well there is no need to replace it. There are plans in the works for a replacement aircraft, but so far nothing has been able to compete with the existing one. IMO the USAF and the tax payers would be better served to overhaul and upgrade the existing aircraft rather than spend much more money to develop a replacement.

@@slimjim7411 Theres a definitive difference between an apache and a A-10C. First is the cost. Maintaining a jet such as the A-10 is unbelievable expensive, second is the aging of the aircraft again adds to the cost of repairs and availability. 3rd is the fact that unlike a gunship, the A-10c has to keep moving and cant simply fly below the radar at lower speeds to enter enemy airspace. They came from a general easterly direction and did several turns following the river not more than 50 feet above the water . They did a cool rolling ( not fully a barrel roll but 2/4 to inverted ) climb over the bridge then dropped back down as They continued for several hundred feet then did a steep climbing banking turn to the south west and flew out of sight . Apparently these Planes were doing some sort of drill and were temporarily at the National Guard Base for a training exercise . It was so cool and the sounds of those engines was like no other Jet .

The A-10 is a tremendous ground support aircraft as proven many times during our war with Iraq. The Air Force has been critical of the A-10 and would rather have more F35 and F22 fighter aircraft. If the Air Force wasn't so protective or territorial, the A-10 would be a tremendous upgrade in ground support missions for the Marine Corps. It seems so natural that Marine Aviators should have their version of the A-10. The Marine version would have an arrester hook and beefed up landing gear for Carrier take off and landings. Army and Marine Infantry units have used the protective capability of the A-10 during all of the Iraq and Afghanistan war missions. I would think that Marine Aviators would be better suited to have the A-10 than Air Force units, Many people do not realize that almost every single Marine Corps officer has to successfully graduate from the Marine Corp Basic School before being allowed to lead Marines. Even Marine Corps. lawyers and pilots have to graduate from the Basic School which is infantry based. Medical doctors are the exception because that support function is provided by the Navy for their Marines. Marine Aviation would rewrite the history of the A-10, because every single Marine Aviator was trained in infantry tactics before they ever attend Navy Flight School. This is actually a tremendous untapped opportunity for the Marine Corps.

When the Air Force was created as a separate branch, there was an agreement among the services that provided the framework for future aircraft roles and who would fly them. The army was limited to liason fixed wing, and guns could be mounted on helicopters. I don’t recall all the details of the agreement but as a career army infantry officer I totally agree with you. I’ve always thought that there should be A-10s, Tucanos or other fixed wing CAS and COIN aircraft with “MARINES” or “US ARMY” painted on the sides in great big letters. Also agree with your statement about those flying CAS should have some infantry training. The army used to require helicopter pilots to be branched in a combat arms (infantry, armor) or combat support (artillery) branch before going to flight school. You have to know your customer.

I really do think now that ultimately the so called left and right will never ever unite or coexist truly peacefully. I think we're all just born to think different and honestly I can't stand most of you left wing nuts. And you're wrong, there's way more people on the right than you think there is and you people never learn your lesson, and you really should be more aware of the reality. Just because you stole an election and cheat and are corrupt in every way possible doesn't mean you always will get away with it or are definitely in the higher numbers. I'm not saying I'm one of the far right people either I'd like to think I'm just a down the middle honest living kind of person but I definitely see way more corruption and evilness from the left than the right undoubtedly. Most of you people just suck. See, I guess I was right about us all just being born to think or believe certain ways because now I sound divisive. But I think the years we're in now so much has happened for so long it's just too late and too far gone for us all to agree or get along. We know you're evil and you try to play reverse-psychology and make us out to be evil or guilty of wrong doings. And I'm speaking of the general rule. I've got a few but very few "liberal" friends in my life and can't imagine ever growing much more of them, we all just see this life differently. And while I know hundreds of years people and things change, it's a miracle our nation has lasted as long as it has I guess you could say peacefully, not counting the Civil War. But unfortunately just as yours and now my opinions differ so drastically and we could probably easily be fighting in the street if we were in front of one another, it's probably only a matter of time before another civil war could happen. It's enough we can't trust our government at all whatsoever, we can't coexist with many people in our own neighborhoods as it is so there's not much hope for this country. I'm sure like it's always happened as with our military, we do for the most part somehow coexist to fulfill objectives and manage to protect and hold this country together, but every year now or even month it's getting more difficult to coexist. Now we've got some of the most powerful and most dangerous nations stoking the war fires and people like you and I who are fellow citizens can't stand each other as a recent rule and would generally most likely be happy to beat one another to a pulp, and that even puts disappointment and negative feelings in my own mind about myself as an American who may one day soon have to fight just to defend my own neighborhood if we ever get attacked from abroad, that we as Americans are so far apart in our beliefs and just the way our eyes see the world, it's just disheartening and makes me feel disgusted sometimes. Like just the things you said and the way I know a person like you feels and thinks, I know I can't stand you as a human and would probably gladly just knock you out as opposed to just speak to you. And that's sad that this is where we are now. "We" feel you've all taken it this far and are just nuts and evil people at your core and are destroying us from within, because you have all your agendas you want to live with, which ironically is what a Russian communist many decades ago said would happen to the USA (they would destroy us from within) , and just like we can see what in Pelosi and Schumer and the squad and all of you left wing radical socialists /communists are doing, that's exactly what you're doing, you're destroying my nation as quickly as you possibly can from within. At the moment at least, there's not ballistic missiles raining down and ships or paratroopers attacking and tearing us apart. It's you all and your evil, divisive ways and beliefs which are totally against our nation as a nation birthed with Christian values. And "you" "people" on the so-called left, believe it's "us" on the so-called "right" who are evil and dumb and uneducated and are racists and want to "overthrow" our government. So you see, I don't see how we can ever truly get along or ever unite fully, even tho that's how I initially started out this comment stating we should be able to. I just don't see how we could. Because although I totally disagree with the words you said and how you characterized how MANY of us feel, while we don't agree with just overthrowing the government, yes many of us absolutely feel that almost every single person in DC should be thrown out on their asses asap and many even thrown in a cell for life, and we should somehow start over completely and hope we can get true people in office that truly care for this nation and its people, and who would accept things like term limits and rules to be enforced as far as them having a salary cap and limits on investments and income etc. There's no way these people like Pelosi should be able to get away with becoming multi-millionares while in office and can pretty much just die while in office like Biden has been in politics his whole life while not doing a damn thing, just getting rich. And that should go for both sides. I don't trust a single one of them all. See, isn't that something. I want us all to be able to unite and be a happier and even greater country, but I don't even trust a single politician who's supposed to be in our service supposedly working on our behalf. It's BS. I'm sure there's a few good ones who truly do but the general rule is that they're all shit. So in closing, while I'm no Qanon or white supremacist sorry to disappoint you, I do share many of these beliefs that you equate with those people and honestly people like you disgust me and make it seem more clearly every day now that we're ultimately doomed as a nation and who knows how much longer we can continue on like this. I know the past couple of years or I will even say the past 15 years has really made me dislike my own nation a lot and lose a lot of hope with humanity. It's a good thing I don't look to humans for anything at all and my ultimate strength comes from God, but it would be nice to not have to deal with people like you every day. While this time it was my choice to type out this comment and react to you, there's many days I don't even leave my house just because I don't want to deal with people like you and am just as happily so in not leaving my home, where I know it's my choice if I happen to communicate with someone like you. So I've given you enough of my time but just so you know there's plenty of us like me out here and you can be as dirty, corrupt and evil as you'd like but we aren't pushovers and we'll always be a real fight for you to deal with. Hope you wear your big-boy pants daily because we aren't going anywhere and no matter how much you people break this country down and try to corrupt everything in sight, we will always be fighting you every step of the way.

The US A-10 Warthog is a very awesome plane.

With the A10 T2 upgrade ... the aircraft is already beloved by Grunts but now its going to be even more effective & lethal providing those soilders with the BRRRRRT- BRRRRT dispatching the enemy & providing the troops on the ground a moral boost. And along with the A10 T2 , The AH-64 Apache & the AC130J GhostRider are always beloved by grunts on the ground.

"The existing prop planes were woefully ill-suited" Obviously, someone forgot to tell the A-1 Skyraider it was ill-suited for the job it did, and did well. 1950's and 60's jets didn't have good loiter time, and the A-10 was still just a plan; it didn't enter actual service with a unit until 1976, long after Korea and Vietnam. The old Spad can't do what the Warthog can now do; but for decades, it got the job done.

*- In Nam,* we had ground suport from the *F-4's Phantoms* flying low from our backs to obliterate nasty targets in front of us & warm us with their jet exhausts as they left. Not that we needed the extra heat in jungle terrain. All in just a few teeth rattling seconds. - And during *Tet.* I watched 3 *VNAF Skyrader* prop dive bombers flying in a circle over & over about a 1,500 feet above us that looked like a bunch of giant buzzards, all for about ten minutes before they finally swooped down one following another, & letting go of 500 lb. bombs that followed the plane's down untill the plane's swooped back up and the bombs continuing stright down. They missed the V.C. bunker 500 yards in front of us. - So a *twin barreled "Duster" (Navel pom pom guns on a tank track)* happend to come by and getting shot at, blasted the bunker to smithereens & left. - Later, back @ camp, we were told what a great job we did illiminating a dangerous enemy threat & all we did was watch the action. - Sorry, I had to get that off my chest.

The USAF also landed C-130s on a highway in Wyoming. The Royal Air Force subsequently carried out similar highway landing drills.

Just looking at the thumbnail depiction of a new A-10 I'm thinking that any A-10 replacement cannot have the ginormous twin vertical stabilizers if you are trying to ne stealthy. Stealth is NOT a priority when the aircraft is buzzing directly over the heads of the enemy.
@abcde_fz
@abcde_fz 2 года назад
Seems to me that from the front and rear, (if radars work the way I understand, which is NOT a given), you've already got a silhouette of an aircraft that's unmistakable as ANYthing but an A10. Giant circular structures that MAY adhere to some basic theories about reducing your radar cross-section, but without special materials and much better angling of reflective surfaces, they can't hope to mask a radar cross-section effectively from a good operator, (IMO). Those big old engines could appear to be fuel cells or tanks, or maybe a couple bombs, but radar operators are trained to have SOME better intuition than just anyone who happens to sit at that station. So my babble just adds to your comment. There are 'stealth issues', at least as far as I can see.

Groundpounders love the A-10 as the close-in support greatly reduces "friendly fire" incidents, which are much more likely when the supporting aircraft is at 50,000 ft rather than a 1,000 ft. I've heard stories of pilots making visual contact and a "thumb's up" with the guys on the ground that they were supporting. I don't support the Fedcoats endless wars far overseas, but I always support the American GI fighting on the ground. The fault is the civilian leadership.

The A-1D Skyraider prop CAS aircraft was NOT woefully inadequate, it was an amazing aircraft that did its job extremely well, it's only drawback was speed.
@eloscuro704
@eloscuro704 2 года назад
That seems to be the issue with the Warthog now. If they upgraded its engines to something more modern, it might be able to fly faster.
@CowboyCree63
@CowboyCree63 2 года назад
@@eloscuro704 the A-10's speed really shouldn't be the problem, it was built specifically to be a low flying, mid speed, heavily armed close support craft. Ask anyone who has been in combat what they would rather have, the Warthog or a Hornet flying cover? The AC-130 Spectre or an F-35. I guarantee 100% they will take the 10 and 130 any day of the week and twice on Sundays, because speed is a drawback for close air support.
