Thank you so much Louis you are the best. I had one case of A2179 with no shorts on none of the two CD3217. The current draw was 0.312A at 5V and boot looping. I replaced the EEPROM for the second chip and for my surprise i got the 20V on the connector of that IC. Then i replaced the another IC and EUREKA! both connectors were getting the 20V. Your video was a great base to do the analysis and troubleshooting. Thanks a lot bro , THUMBS UP :D

I think it will like if we put charge in one port then it will talk to other port for not accepting other charger in them,so if 1 chip fails to confirm that it's port is not connecting to charger all three did not charge because of safety.

I enjoy your board repair videos. If somehow your repair business tanked (highly unlikely I know) you certainly would be an excellent educator. I have had a formal education in electronics and I must say that I have heard very few people get a point across as succinctly as you. Today's video is one of the better examples of this. Visual inspection is always a good first step in the repair process. But what if everything looks good as in this case. It's critical to develop that logical thought process that leads you in the right direction as quickly as possible. Your explanation of how and why you arrived at your diagnostic conclusion today was clear and forthright and easy to understand by most of the people viewing this video. Keep up the excellent work! I was working on a a1706 MacBook Pro today, 2 ports displayed 0v, 1 displayed 5v and the last one had 20v. It powered on and charged fine. Was also able to read/write data and output to a display. Interesting situation indeed. Rom was bad.

There have been times in the past when Boeing or Airbus(don't remember which one) engineers were debugging and writing patches when inside a plane mid-flight because the bug only happened during specific conditions. I’m gonna bet now that Apple engineers design those boards on a windows pc, and that’s not only because there is no decent EDA on Mac.

What is the editing technique that you and other youtubers/facebook creators are using to frontload a funny/interesting part at the beginning of a video that you will later see in the video with context. What caused the ROM chip to die? Does replacing that chip mean it won’t fail again? Or is a test period after repair needed?

Well, a rom chip normally isn't exactly a weak component by electronic standards... If there was a bigger problem on the board that caused this chip to fail, my guess is that it would have fried more than one component, and since replacing the chip resolved the problem, it is a reasonable assumption to say that the chip failed by itself (and because it's an apple product, obviously). Now, the computer probably is tested offscreen, and in the case of failure soon after release to the customer, if the problem is directly related to the previous repair, I guess Louis will fix it again with a discount, or something like that. Not sure though...

Hi, Louis, what is the reason for the amps tester blinking when plugged in blinks with 5v. It takes 5v and can see pp3v3_g3h is present. amps meter is not steady like ur only for this board any clue??

Hi Louis, I have also an issue with an a1706 and have a question, when measuring with amp meter only 5v and amp varies between 0.13 and 0.25 amp pp3v3 G3H is present and ppbus main rail also but doesn't get 20V and obviously doesn't charge too and to me the four cd3215 looks all fine (usbc ports doing all the same thing, no anomalities). do you have any suggestion. the only visual thing I noticed is that C3208 looks a bit burned but seems to work fine -, it is not shorted and I am measuring 3v at that cap please any suggestion would be very welcome! thanks in advance!

So I have a stupid question how many watts does a laptop charger pull from an outlet if the laptop is off? It's an 120w charger and the. Battery is only 3 batteries in series(asus x550vx ) it takes 2h to charge.

When you plug something in to an outlet, even when it's not connected to your laptop, it has a parasitic draw, often between 5mA and 50mA to run the components inside the charger or whatever device even if they are not outputting Watts to your laptop or the thing is switched on, what ever the thing is that was plugged in. It's referred to as quiescent current, and the design of rectifiers (converting AC to DC current) is inefficient, thus leaking power when doing nothing. So in an ugly case of using 30mA of current, it's drawing 3.6Watts doing nothing.

You would probably need the data. If you're working on an A1706 like this one, then you could probably just pull the data from the second ROM, copy it, and flash it onto your new ROM in the same way that you would if you were resetting the firmware ROM on an older machine.

you are mean, yes one port would kill all other systems even the laptop :-D did you see their repairing profit margin? It is by request that design, not chance to be an error.

O' Mighty one I need some advice.. I have a MacBook Pro 2018 A1990 that no longer switches on or charges. After plugging in a USB meter it reads 19.9volts & the amps slowly creep up to about 0.87amp & then cycle back to the beginning. If I take disconnect the battery I see it drawing 19.9 volts again but hardly any amps, somewhere around 0.01 - 0.02 Any suggestions on what I should look for? I have removed the board and I see no water damage nor do I see anything that looks suspicious so this one has me stumped! Thanks Lewis. Dean.
