maybe some more of "now im using [tool name/tip] and why? other than that i think ive learned a few things. sorry if its too noob. but i find the tools to be a little confusing sometimes. as i see some people use some tips that others dont stc. might be preference i guesss but idk.

I thought the video was excellent. However, I would have liked to have seen the thermals before you injected 1 volt purely for a thermal comparison between before and after. Most likely before would have shown little to no thermal energy but a means to visually assess before touching the board

I am an absolute beginner and non-native speaker. I could follow this explanation quite well, but found the explanation of the buck-converter with the full screen schematic a bit fast. A software to draw on the screen in this section might be helpful if you want to highlight something. E.g. the section in the schematic which lowers the voltage or a specific power rail.

In addition: Is there a reason why you use capacitors from a donor board and not some new ones? Are Apple capacitors in some way special?

Horatio1741, probably there’s no way to find them otherwise. Louis has many videos on the fact that Apple is making life difficult for independent repair businesses.

I thought this repair seemed a little easier than others. I’m still very new to all this (been binging these videos for 3 days) but this seemed a little easier to follow. I read up on the training manual google docs you gave as well and it was slightly confusing towards halfway through. I think the most challenging part is looking at the schematic and understanding which piece directly affects another piece (or component). The numbers you use when measuring volts to assess issues probably just comes with experience so that’s the one thing I’m okay with not really knowing

The thermal camera isn’t really miscalibrated - problem is just parallax error because the visible and infrared sensors are separated. So the overlay between the visible and thermal images only line up correctly at a certain distance.

With the voltage changing up and down reminded me of pulse width modulation, I’ve heard of it used for fan speed control, but I guess it’s the same principle?

same principle, but while hickups is self-preserve feature, pwm is running mode. also as the frequency in hichukps is lower by atleast 3 grades slow DWM will show rubbish - there most likely be no sequence for you to observe, while working pwm measures stable value

Its frustrating that you don't routinely check both sides of the buck coil for shorts to ground. They have some resistance, in fact this particular circuit seems to use coil resistance as a current sense. You should have be able to read a lower resistance on the shorted side, if the meter is sensitive enough. Additionally, since the short was actually downstream, you should have been able to see switching (using ac mode) on the upstream side, when the circuit was trying to power up. Not everybody has donor boards on standby.

There's a dedicated camera chip? Why? The webcam usually sits on an internal USB channel.

Does the board view not also have an extra chip? The j3098 right next to that one, which seems to correspond to the empty solder pads, but is substantially smaller than that chip?

It might be possible, but if it's a bga chip, it's a pain to replace and probably not worth it

Can't you get an idea of what's shorted from looking at the current? When you put the voltage through the board, the current started steadily rising/the resistance was dropping, likely because the component was heating up. Isn't that kind of behaviour fairly characteristic of a semiconductor? As the temperature rises they start to become more and more leaky and pass more and more current. Not definite of course, but strongly hinting that it was indeed the chip at fault, and not the capacitor? Edit: I guess not, wonder why the cap behaves like that? Looked it up and apparently the property I stated is characteristic of both semiconductors and insulators, learn something new every day :D

i have an 1708 macbook pro. no facetime camera but it is still detected (system info). also the trackpad lost its haptic feedback/touch. what do you think would be the next issue of this macbook? it seems the a1708 is the macbook pro that has the most issues. it's also making random popping sounds. i believe its not from the speaker. its from the trackpad. haptic feedback no longer works but sometimes it makes a popping/clicking sound. i can feel it on the trackpad.
