Speaking off camera, Highways staff said they hope the road between the M1 and A1 in Bedfordshire will be clear by Sunday at the latest but it is expected to be clear by Saturday. Then it will be assessed and likely will need to be resurfaced at the least but bridge surveys will need to be done first after the road is cleared of mud and debris.
The Ford Mondeo was removed yesterday with the owners wallet found inside, the last MOT said it had rusty suspension!

I don't understand how they can have any doubts about the integrity of the bridge and yet still allow traffic to flow across it. Surely, if they are even slightly suspicious about how safe the bridge is, it should be closed, or at the very least carry restricted traffic? Thanks WN - may you have many happy days wandering and informing us about events!

What a complete fiasco, heads should roll, but they won't. Wrong sort of rain, once in a hundred year event, could not have foreseen this, we will be commissioning an inquiry in 2027/8, which we hope the outcome will show that the office tea boy was found in error and we have sacked as appropriate or provided training. We will of course learn from this event and hand out MBE's to all involved.

Pretty sure I heard your drone as I was hanging my washing out this morning! On another note I have seen an article in a Bedford paper where highways agency have said it may be open by Wednesday…

I would think they should try to open the slip roads quickly to get the traffic off the local roads if they do need to reevaluate the bridge, the road surface and presumably bigger pumps and pipes?????

If the bridge is unsafe it's probably not a great idea to open the slip roads and feed traffic onto it.

Thank you, really helpful. So that stranded car has finally been removed then? What a miserable job for all the workers involved. You can easily identify just how far up the banks the water reached given the colour of the vegetation. I sincerely hope that it will be open soon as local roads/communities/commuters have been severely impacted.

Of course the real question is why the pumping station was positioned so low? Yes, the inlet pipe needs to be as low as possible, but the pumps could easily have been much higher.

Just drones can pass under so far 😀 Highways have just said it may be open by Wednesday, they need to tell that to those on the ground- I’d be amazed!
