Glad you showed the whole tear down. It's part of the business and challenge. Love the brute simplicity of early 727's. +1

I'm looking forward to part 2 of the rebuild. You made the tear down look so easy. I've never gone into an automatic trans before. I'm pushing 70 and I'm thinking that it's now or never. Thank you for that first great video.

I rebuilt a 727 about 15 years ago and it took me about 2 weeks of evenings and weekends and I still had to pull it out of the vehicle and apart twice because I didn't put the piston seals on correctly and a bunch of other stuff. Love your vids Hiram :)

That is a candidate for the pressure washer for sure. I am happy to see that I am not the only one that gets transmissions that have been "dug up out of the field." Love the 727! Great transmission!

Hello Hiram, You mentioned on this that you miss your dad and remember being with him back in the day. I just want you to know, the stuff you are doing on here with your expertise and teaching, I am sure your dad would be right proud of you. God be with you and yours. Allan

Hi Hiram. Great video. I'm looking forward to the finished product. I bet these old units from the 60's and 70's are more robust and durable than the modern transmissions with a the plastic parts and the sensitive electronics. Of course the newer units are so compact that they hold so much heat vs the old transmission houses that had more surface area to dissipate heat. Great video. Can't wait for the next video on this old transmission.

Used to drag race a TF727 back in the 80's. Was easy back then to go to the Dodge store and buy 5.0 kickdown lever, Hemi front drum, hemi band, 4 pinion planetary gears, valve body etc. Good strong trans.

Finally got around to watching this. Brings back memories of when I tore down a TorqueFlight 927 in trade school, although nowhere NEAR as dirty as this one. Too bad I forgot everything pertaining to it. I bet you probably had to call Safety Kleen or whoever it is that you have change your parts washer solvent and had em come out and change the solvent in your case washer after washing off that much mud. I have a few boys come into my shop that do a lot of muddin in their 4WD's that I thought wrote the book on stupid as far as gettin mud all over their stuff, but they ain't got nothing on this.

727 / TF8 was fitted to loads of light duty trucks and buses in the UK in the 1990’s. This was the first transmission I learnt how to rebuild. My old boss used to buy a container load of core units from the states so we had parts. UK ones had a shorter tail stock and a deeper sump. We used to see loads where the low / reverse servo used cock over in the bore, that and the low / reverse sprag used to spin in the housing, or the rings on the input shaft used to wear groves into the pump housing. Or the low / rev drum used to pick up on the governer housing.To be fair they were built to last, not made out of pressed tin like the newer transmissions were.

Great video. This will help me a ton on my rebuild. I'm just curious as to if you ever got around to making a rebuild video after the tear down? If not is there one that you know of? Tearing down one is one thing, it's putting it all back together that can be tricky. Thanks,Damian.

Hello Hiram I'm Sha'ban from saudi arabia.I hope to help me to solve the problem in my car ford taurus 2010 limited. The problem is that there a is shaking in the car when resuming the acceleration while driving in low speed on the 4th & 5th gear(60-100km) but when accelerate harder that shaking disappears.Some technicians said that i have to rebuild the gearbox and some of them said that I need to change the control module with 2 sensors! What solution you think to go with?

just a side note. up to 65 that trans had a rear oil pump. which let you push start it. but NOT after 65. also if it bangs hard going into rev. pull the gear shift all the way to low then rev. the reason is when you go straight to rev it loads the servo with 300 psi . but if you to low it loads it with 150 pis. then when you go to rev you only hit with 150 psi.

You really know what your talking about. I have a 727 exactly like the one in this video. I am having a problem with my tranny revving after 5-10 min of driving. When i replace the tranny fluid it is fine for about a week or 2 of every day driving. then back to the original problem. I have looked all over google and the only thing i can think of is my transmission speed sensor? Do you think this is it, or do you know of anything else that could be an issue?

Hiram, I just came from the theater where I watched Jurassic World. Where did you get this thing, from an archeological dig. Was it buried in the Brea Tar Pits. All of that moss growing on it made it look like it came from 1000 years ago. Did you jump into your DeLorean Time Machine to bring this back from 50 years ago. Holy Flux Capacitor man.

Question Hiram, can a torque converter be unbalanced? If so what do you think would cause this? This is for an auto trans on a 92' accord. I've read posts everywhere about the car idling rough in gear but stopped. Everyone talks about the mounts and timing and cleaning the throttle accessories, heck some dealers think it's normal. Just thought to ask the one guy I've seen so far who knows the parts like no other. By the way, love your videos. Keep em coming! Patna.
@stevenlamb3971
@stevenlamb3971 9 лет назад
I'm trying to diagnose a leak that's coming from inside the bell housing on my Jeep 30RH/A904. I've replaced the pump seal but it doesn't seem to be the problem, the torque converter looks good and is dry when I pull the transmission. Also the vent hole in the pump is dry. But when its running it drips fluid out the housing like crazy. It's definitely trans fluid, could it be the pump gasket or O ring? Or maybe the pin plug? Shifts OK etc.
@purplexenno
@purplexenno 8 лет назад
+Steven Lamb have you tried one of the jeep forums, that's where i go to get info on occasion. He fairly agnostic so getting a lot of mopar tranny's just isn't happening.

Actually I'm more interested how a throttle shift down linkage works on a 727 or 904. Or how a Lokar cable takes its place. Or what to look for when you drop the trans oil pan to inspect or tune. I know you can't magically make a video about all this but just a thought.

There is a nice reusable pan gasket from Chrysler that works far better than any of those cork or paper gaskets. Part number 2464324AC for the big torqueflites (727 series) or 4295875AC for the 904 series.

Pressure wash please. Weather or not the customer brought it to you this way no transmission should ever be disassembled this dirty. Pressure washing the case will save you so much time and frustration. even the time in cleaning your table and the wear and tear on your tools is an incentive in cleaning before disassembly. Nice Ingersal by the way.
