I wanted to work out if the AA 4.8W solar charger would work from Autumn to Spring up here in Scotland before they arrived in case I needed to find another solution. Here's the results...

I tried one of those earlier this year, in the winter, for use on a Toyota Hybrid with quite a small 12V battery. Unfortunately, it failed quite soon, and was evidently damaged in transport by the well known A firm. Didn’t attempt to return it, and it did have a useful EODB plug. It’s not easy to access the battery in this car, with it being under the back seat, and is not set up for easy access. Thus I bought one of the Halfords ones for £22.99 (which does not come with an EODB plug), with a similar rating - but a lot smaller, so presumably using more efficient cells. The car is located in central southern England, broadly parked south, but by a building so that the direct sun hours are around 6 hours peak. So far, so good - although if the hours used are low, I do top it up using an older automatic mains charger. The main thing with this type of car, having a built in Battery Management System (BMS), is not to clash with it by connecting external devices with the power switched on. Note that the capacity of the battery, and the voltage of it depends on the temperature. They always quote a value in large text, and either nothing about the temp at which it is valid, or in small text! The standard temp is 20 °C, but in a typical winter the capacity could easily be 50% down due to the weather.

Just tried a 5W charger from Halfords. It says it's for small cars... which mine is (60AH stop-start) Like you I'm in Scotland East Coast. Car battery seems to be worse than without it. I leave it for 1 week at a time, use it at the weekend. Maybe a 20W charger would be ok, but it's quite big, so i wouldn't want to leave it on top of the car, so it would be behind the windscreen, which would block light meaning it's a waste of time. I bought a lithium battery jump starter instead. It works well. Maybe I'll just jump the car every weekend...

That's fantastic , thanks for all the hard work you did gathering data. Batteries are a complex science and I am hoping you can help me. My car battery was losing charge, driven quite regularly, but resting was 12.1 Volts, it`s quite new After starting it would go to normal range of 13.5-14.5. Maybe it hadn't been driven enough , anyway I got a solar battery charger (4.8) AA , do you think that is a good move ? Thanks Red 🙂🙂🙂🙂

I am absolutely not an expert on this but... my best guess is that if you have a resting charge of 12.1 volts then the battery is potentially problem - I certainly don't allow my leisure batteries to go below 12.2 as I am assuming it to be a 50% state of charge. The higher voltage you see when driving is typically the voltage out of the alternator as it tries to charge the battery. I would recommend going to a battery specialist outlet and asking them but my best guess is that if the battery is resting at 12.1 it is at fault. Assuming a healthy battery and some actual sun I think the AA charger is a good backup for medium amphour batteries. Just to reiterate I am definitely not an expert so worth going to chat with a battery retailer.

Thanks for making this Vid. It was helpful to be able to see in advance some of the instructions. Being one of your south of the border cousins, I think I would get enough sunlight hours to maintain the battery on my Transit. I am actually worried it could overcharge the battery. I appreciate an optimal 4.8 watts is a very small output but, the Transit is an older 2008 model and I don't think it loses very much voltage. The trouble is I only use it as a shed so I only need to move it to load and unload. It only really runs once a month for about 2 minutes. But if I need to get access quick I don't want to be naffing about with jump leads. Plus I have ruined batteries before by over discharging them etc. Can you tell me, does it have protection from over charging. Also if you don't mind, do you have an update on performance in the 8 months since you posted this video!! Thanks

I do not know definitely if there is a risk of overcharging but I understand your concerns, however I remember reading someone claiming it could never overcharge a battery due to the low current but as you say your needs are somewhat unusual. Maybe if it was just plugged in every other week you would get the balance. Without a unit it is obviously difficult to for you guesstimate but if you get one I would see how long it takes to charge up to a desired voltage and run it for that period and then disconnect and plug it back in when the voltage drops to a limit you set e.g. 12.2 volts. I have not used it over the winter as it really didn't add any value and used a Victron Blue Smart Charger whilst there was insufficient daylight ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-6QQj4pa2Gvs.html however I am just about to plug it back in for the summer season (the van was parked in full shade up until now) and I fully expect it to perform as designed. I will report back here if there are any issues, but I doubt there will be any as it seems to be a steady and reliable bit of kit. Cheers

@@RedNemesisDogPrime Thanks for your reply. I have bitten the bullet and purchased the same model. I will keep track with the multi-meter and report back. In the height of summer, If I am worried about overcharging, I may get one of the cheap 1.5 watt solar panels, mix it up a bit. All the best.

@@nicholaschip5820I'm thinking of getting this charger. Do you recommend?

@@-_AjB_- It's too early for me to give an definitive answer really. As my van shed is new to me I don't really know the condition of the batteries or over what period it would run its batteries low. The van shed does have a flashing LED that flashes constantly so in my previous experience I would expect after a month the battery would be flat. I tested it today and after about 6 weeks it was at 12.16 volts. Technically not properly charged but enough to start the old girl. I suspect the solar panel did help to keep the voltage up but, this is in summer, I think in winter it will struggle. Time will tell.

Can I use the as solar charger on a 2023 bmw f40 128 ti because I don’t use the car all week I use to use it on my 2022 Vw golf to keep the battery topped up thank you mike

Hi Mike, I am afraid my knowledge of the solar charger is pretty much limited to '...it trickle charges lead acid batteries very slowly...' so if you have concerns regarding a specific car I reckon you might need to get in touch with the AA. Sorry I can't be more helpful. Cheers, john
