Performers: Padmini and Vyjyayanthimala (in the famous danceoff, Hindi version with English subtitles). Movie: Raj Tilak (1958). Music Director: C. Ramchandra. Lyrics:: P. L. Samant.
Padmini no doubt Is the queen of Bharatanatyam. Her footwork is out of this world. Vyjayanthimala did an excellent job as well. They both are untouchables and will be the case for centuries!
Vaijyanti ji to sirf ek hi hain, kisi se unki tulna nahi ho sakti halanki padmini is also a great dancer.both have own style.tumhare jaise biased mansikta ke tuchche log bina matlab ki tulna karne lagte hain.
A beautiful dance performance by both Padmini and Vijayanthimala. Both were celebrated artistes not only for their classical dance talent but also for their acting skills in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu and other Indian language movies in 1950s, 60s and 70s. After their debut in South Indian movies, both ventured into Hindi films early in their career, thanks to Madras based studios like Gemini and AVM who were keen to show these actresses' talent in their Hindi productions as well. Both were successful, but while Vijayanthimala chose to focus on Hindi movies Padmini shifted her focus back to Tamil movies. Both actors continued to give block buster performances, as classical dancers as well as in character roles in their chosen language movies. One of Padmini's all time great movies was Thillana Mohanambal, a wholesome Tamil classical dance and music movie in which Padmini as a Bharatanatyam dancer goes head to head with Sivaji Ganesan who donned the role of Nadaswaram player (south Indian version of Shehnai). Likewise Vijayanthimala has given several memorable movies, especially with Dilip Kumar (and with Raj Kapoor, Sunil Dutt, Dev Anand, Rajendra Kumar and others). It's unfortunate many people in the comments column compared their dance in this song and concluded one is better than the other. The fact is both were at their best, as always. It's just that Vijayanthimala's character in the song comes out as that of a jealous girl and therefore she had to dance to the character and in a subdued style. Sometimes we get carried away by the characters in movies and make poor judgement of actors such as villains. In any case, I liked both Padmini and Vijayanthimala in the dance and also the brief appearance of Gemini Ganesan as a king unable to decide who to side with. I believe the Tamil version of this movie (Raj Thilak) was Vanji Kottai Valiban.
Awesome both Padmini n Vyjanthimala are good n speed dancers. They are very famous in South Indian movies for their dance performances in 1950's onwards. Everyone went to watch the movies bec of their dance. Till today they are in the viewers hearts n cannot be forgotten. I just love watching them dance.
Shame we don't have any dances like this any more. Even if one could make the choreography half as tough as this, who in the present day could perform that, maybe except for Madhuri Dixit. Today we just mostly have models for actresses. No real talent. I keep wondering if we still had people with this kind of talent in bollywood, more children would strive to work on their classical dance, taking classical Indian dance to new heights.
Once it was lucky I happened to be watching and the DD showed Konark festival, over a quarter century back, and Meenakshi Seshadri was a revelation. Didn't perhaps do so well in films, but that one! She fits right in with Padmini and Madhuri Dixit. Superlative.

I'm not Indian I don't understant the song but I see 2 Legendary dancers... both of them the best among the best but my favourite dancer and actress Vijyamanti Mala she is really Iconic dancer and actress.
I'm foreigner indian classical dance best in the world I love it bt I can't understand why drictors n producers going behind cheap n bad west dance be proud u have best culture
I don't understand why people need to compare these super talented dancers. We're very fortunate to watch these great artists performances. We rarely see performers like these in Bollywood today. Thank you for this video.
Well said 👌.....bt u know ppl r like dat ......they don't understand the value of one's hardwork nd talent....all actresses nd their talents grace of God....not to compare it's insulting the Divine... Just enjoy nd praise eqally .... everbody hav their own speciality....
Bahut sahi bat apne boli hai.kuchh do kauri ke ghatia aur chutiye insan-jinhe dance ka k,kh,g bhi nahi Pata, sirf biased ho kar ghatia comment karte hain.
People's comments here.. I like her.. I dislike her.. Her dance was better.. She is more blah blah.. Botg of them are legends.. Not single of us are even near to possibility of judging a single step.. Far aside the comparison and judgements :/
They senseless less sense please ignore .yester years cine world was talented hardworking not money minded name and game also secondary only they showed respect towards art and gained talent through dedication and hardwork.nowdays cine world is corporate world mbas are becoming directors they say art or theatre thirsty brought them to the field which is laughable I never like use untoward wordings.. I just wrote my views.yester years cine actors are beautiful handsome we can enjoy their every expressions and mannerisms. Today's a very big no to cine world and music world very hard to get recognised everything and everybodies hard work goes in vain because of no synchrony. May today's cine world rest in peace and harmony good bye .
I have no knowledge of classical dances but intuitively I can say for sure Padmani is way ahead of any other dancers in Mudras, expressions, posture and elegance. Though she is underrated. Both the dancers here are legend though.
Jagjit Ishar Since both these dancers r popular, producers don't know whose name should appear first in film titles. It was solved that in Hindi version Vyjayanthimala's name will come first followed by Padmini & in Tamil Version, Padmini's name will appear. This decision was taken based on popularity rating

Both ladies are from the South and dance was in their blood. We shouldn't compare who is better as both have their own genre in choreographing the barthanathiyam. An epic classic dance. Mind-blowing expression
Ohhh wowww that's great they u love our indian culture & let me tell u that I also love the famous Turkish drama called Feriha is my favourite . Emir sara phulo in feriha sooooooo handsome
Hats off to the director and choreographers who created this. Tamil version is yet powerful since it's the source version. Nevertheless the dancers are also experts in this field, vaijaiyanthimala and padmini made the entire song a fire....
to add, Vyjayanthimala's dances in Amrapalli were just mindblowing. The movie did fail but her dances were unforgettable. And she quit after marriage to concentrate on her dancing with many shows abroad. Even till today, at 72 she still performs Bharatnatyam. such is her love for the art.
The Tami version was the original - both are great dancers, although in this movie Padmini has the edge as she demonstrates more classic moves than Vyjanthimala - but let's admit - both are BEAUTIFUL and both are GREAT DANCERS of the classical baratha natyam
I just can't come to a conclusion who looks more beautiful!... Coming to dance, I think Padmini's dance in this clip is more graceful than that of Vyjayantimala's, even taking into the account the characters portrayed by both...
Yes sir...but each has its own tune know sir...Tamil always having the bright words where Hindi has very mild words sir... Both have its own speciality .....
I love songs in both the languages. But,the innate tendency of comparison shows some void in you. I mean 'Kanne kalaimane' and 'surmayi ankhiyon mein', they both are great songs to listen to and it wouldn't be a great idea to compare them but well, you carry on. Linguistic chauvinism is a real thing.
Padmini is the mosy beautiful actress in the entire film world Her beauty acting dance expressions dialogue delivery are superb Kamala lakshman Kusala kumari Sai subbalakshmi L Vijayalakshmi E B Saroja Raja Sulochana Lalitha Ragini Hemamalini are also good dancers Sobhana is also a good dancer But Padmini is no one Sarojadevi Anjaladevi Bhanumathi Savithri are not good dances but they are good actresses Bhanumathi is also a good singer
Bhanumathi amma is One of the most successful and multilingual Indian film actress( Actress, Singer, Producer, Editor, Music director, lyricist, Director, Studio owner, Writer, Painter, Astrologer, Philosopher) Six times national award winner different category and her served Tamil Nadu music college principle later eighties.
Marathi manoos...(marathi man) legendary music director C. Ramchandra ( Ramchandra Narhar Chitalkar) was the music director for both tamil and hindi versions of this film. Isn't that really incredible. He was truly a genious and never got his deserved credits. The tamil film Vanjikottai Valiban was a blockbuster
no one noticed beside compairing with two legendary dancers, here is a competetion of duet in two legendary singers. geeta dutt and lata. and clearly geeta had more promissing voice here..
Tall n elegantly speedy is PADMANI MAA..her foot work stands no match..PADMANI MAA is a goddess of complete soulful presentation of performances.Though Vaijantimala too is good n more glamorous which is not actually a talent..but still Padnimaa is cut above all the rest of the dancers till the date...Salute you MAA...! It’s feast for the eyes to watch her at 6.44..
Both amazing dancers. I am a huge fan of Vyajanthi MaLa, so for me it's her # 1..!!! Padmini is an amazing dancer too, don't get me wrong. I sure wish some had interviewed these two classical dancer regarding the making of this song/dance. I am sure it must have been an amazing experience and whole lot of drama too from both ends.
I also feel d same.....But I had heard in padminji s interview as dis was d most healthiest competition....Even during padminji funeral ...vmala hi had said d same
I read somewhere that the director had a huge problem shooting this number Both actresses had giant egos. So the producer came up with an idea : barring one or two scenes the number was filmed separately on both . Then it was beautifully edited . The Hindi song lyrics had to match the expressions and dance movements shot in the Tamil.number . The movie Raj Tilak , bombed at the box office . But this number became immortal .
It's impossible to turn on eyes from the dance & also decide that who is better. Both the legend Padmini & Vyjayanthimala are best at their own place. Also wonderfully sung by the legend Asha Bhosle (for Vyjayanthimala) & Sudha Malhotra (for Padmini). Last, but not least, fabulously composed & orchestra by the great genius C. Ramchandra.
I think they both are equally beautiful. Not fair to compare as beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I love both actresses n admire their dancing prowess, as both are classically trained n professional dancers. They both played their respective roles to perfection. Admire both's eye n body language whc bespeaks their proficiency in their art.
Then also infront of maduri dixth no actress in this world beatiful india cannot produce another maduri dixth maduri dixth is highly skilled talented super star
Vain argument about who's better of the two. both were trained in classical dance and music. Vijayanthi became more famous not just for her dance, beauty/looks and/or acting. It was for all the above qualities, plus the fact that she was very intellectual in her choice of movies to act in. Padmini was beautiful and had looks anyone would sympathize with her, but she was a good actress, but not as strong as Vijayanthi. Padmini did have good movies in Tamil, but so was Vijayanthi, who probably acted in Kannada and Telugu movies also. In fact, Vijayanthi also made her mark in the only Bengali picture she acted in, it was directed by Tapan Sinha.
Padmini left film industry very soon then...Vmala...marryng to a dignifified doctor who was settled in america and was a tranvancore nair.....that made a lot of difference u cant compare here wholly with vmala in personal traits......three travancore sisters decently got maaried to malayalee nairs of their caste .....while other southindian actresses in hindi had just spolied dere names marrying northindian married men....
Anup that is a very idiotic comment to make. I am not sure you are mentally grown up making personal comments about people when we are discussing their talents as artists. I said Vijayanthi was intellectual in the choice of her movies. Then I spoke about her association with the arts including cinema and dance. Vijayanthi was also into philanthropy. The reply to this can be that Padmini was equally good and had the same calibre as Vijayanthi, which means people are entitled to differ in their perception of artistes in the field of cinema, theatre, dance, sculpture etc. First check your knowledge of geography.... what do you mean by "other south indian actresses"? Do you mean to say Vijayanthi was from some other planet while Padmini was from South India?? Do Karnataka or Tamil Nadu not as South Indian as is Kerala, for your demented mind????? Whom Padmini or Vijayanthi married is none of your or my business, it is their personal choice. If anyone thinks another actor or actresses is better than Vijayanthi, I for one do not have a problem, but to compare Vijayanthi with Padmini basing on whom they married, you will agree, I am sure, is downright contemptuous and beneath any comment or response!!! Stop presuming and start thinking!!!
Stupid argument. Don't forget that vyjayanthimala role in the song is dancing with jealousy. Whereas padmini is trying to seek attention fr gemini. The war in the dance was pictured so perfect by both women.. They are portraying the characters why argue nonsense who is better. BTW gemini looks so like rekah male version.
i m a die hard fan vjmala but honestle speaking padmini is the winner in this song. actually this was not the best of vjm she could dance better than what she did in this song. i think she was over confident
Padmini, the beautiful, confident, mature woman with grace and humour, dealing with a younger woman whose pride of her own beauty and accomplishments is seriously challenged as she sees Padmini dance - and Vyjayantimala who really reminds one of a cute three year old with accolades, is befitting the hilarious part she plays!
Tamil version is superior in my opinion. The lyrics don’t fit the beat of the song in Hindi too well. Good effort though on the part of the translators and not just a cheap dub over job but, they reshot with same actors.
It is difficult to decide which dancer is better. both are high class classical.dancer. I have.seen many. film of V.Mala.& Padmani Sangum . Mera.nam.Joker
Not sure why the choreographer made it more classical for Padmini and a very light not classical for vaijayanthi. Also costume of padmini is very classic and beautiful whereas that of vaijayanthi is of a poor taste.
the original tamil version by the legendary singers Jikki and P Leela is million times better than this one.......this is from someone who doesn't even understand tamil........i can watch the original version till the end of time...........
Hindi Lyrics doesnt fit into the tune properly which was originally made for Tamil lyrics. Especially the phrase ' jawab de tu' which vijyanti sings is clumsy.
What a stamina in olden days in tamil culture but hindi lyrics speed is slow just compare with music and say if u want any proff just listen tamil original version of this ...,
Padmini is an born artist... can dance continuously with out any cinema director's "CUT" ... ....she is from kerala..known as one from travancore sisters... vaijanthi mala only a cinematic danser... but pathmini is a classical idol as she amazingly shown the perfection of her movements... steps....
Both have done such a beautiful dance actually they all are from South and I love South dancers.I like this one and second one is: Apallam-Chapallam Third:Are jaa hatt re Nathkhat and Fouth:Vyjayanthimala's dance Amrapali song . These all are my favourite song.
Vyjanthimala was an actress/dancer par excellence....anyone who has seen the "hontho'n pe aise baat dabaa ke chali aayi" picturized with no retakes..can only wonder....Padmini was hampered by comparisons to Vyjanthimala...who was way more classy and accomplished. But one cannot deny that Padmini was very talented....indeed..
+Thabadcat well...padmini was a dancer of caliber equal to that of vjm...but they had different styles. the former had training in kathakali also which makes her a bit more exuberant and buoyant but the latter has unparalleled fluidity. a very tough comparison. padmini has diehard fans who themselves are trained/professional dancers, and so does vjm.... with whom, i fall madly in love every time i watch her dances....over and over again. as for this particular dance, i was told by a dance critic that vjm was a just a wee bit nervous. wonder if that is true?
Thabadcat Padmini wasn’t as popular as Vyjayantimala in Bollywood, but her skills were on par and arguably BETTER than Vyjayantimalas... don’t trip and say she was hampered, please, Padmini did more movies and had a longer career and whether Vyjayantimala was there or not, Padmini’s longevity and skill remained well into late in her life
I feel like Praan with a sardonic smile & a glass of wine. While dancesrs are sweating I am having fun. Most of them in this video are already in heaven; while we the mortal souls can still admire & apprciate this art. Too bad Bombay is not Bombay any more. Well nothing lasts for ever. I am glad there is Bombay Sapphire Gin; not Mumbai Gin. Just sharing a fact with you, when I was growing up only the illiterate called Bombay, mumbai_mumbai, my foot. India has lost the class.
Miss, thank you. You are right, I saw the ceremony where she was weighed in gold. I was referring to many other characters, my favorite was Pran. Best wishes.
I agree, its very tough to make a favourite out of them but Padmini wins my heart over specially in few sections her movements are crisp on feet yet smooth on hands! Where Vaijayantimala was a course of river swiftly moving through mountains, Padmini on the other hand was like the ripples of water by flowing over shallow bed!
Very few know the makers didn't want the actresses to have cheap rivalry so both dancers were performed differently without knowing each other what they are doing only last 2 days they were both asked to dance together, after completion of dance even in that non digitalised wen both screen were brought 2gether, both dancers were astonished... To see each other dancing so bfullly, they never had cheap rivalry... Infact till last padmini said it was the healthiest competition in Indian cinema so did vyjayanthimala agreed too.
I love the dance of Padmini, she is so light , her movemante is so beautiful ' so wonderful , no one cane dance so nice so beautiful like PADMINi = she is the real qween
Don't want to argue who is better, Vijyantimala indisputable of the great dancer of classical dance, but I believe that Padmini is not worse. And generally I just enjoy looking at art both.
