My Hidetsugu deck runs every lifelink-granting equipment in the game, as well as a handful of threaten spells. I mostly use them to target Hidetsugu to get multiple activations in one turn, but they can also be used to snag your opponents creatures to finish them off. Because there is so much equipment already, I also run Brass Squire and Magnetic Theft. Both are great for surprising people with a sudden equip, especially with my pet combo in the deck, Pariah's Shield + Brash Taunter. One time I Squire-equipped Taunter, with the Shied, in response to an all-in swing, and it was glorious.
Thanks egyptcraze! I was playing Hidetsugu's Second Rite for a while, and was never able to get to the point where casting it was favorable. The mana cost caused some problems at that point in the game, where I favored playing a creature over it about 90% of the time. I'd love to put it back in at some point though. Like I said, I rotate a lot of different cards in and out of this deck.
Kenpatchi Ramasama Quietus Spike is not banned. It is a decent suggestion for most Hidetsugu decks. For me, whether it's just a personal preference, or a metagame choice, this deck really doesn't like to have too many creatures attacking until I'm finishing the game, which isn't great timing for Q-Spike. However, I could see it working if you've got a lot of tuck effects as a support option, or maybe a Godo to go get it.
Aaron Durbin Valid point. personally i just run it because everyone at my playgroup are 100% Grade-A spikes, and me as a mono-red player has to have those 1HKOs.
Yeah. I still think Seething Song is definitely a situational card, but really caters to its color well and it's potent if you can use the mana in a way where you aren't going to get blown out by counterspells and removal. For extra Storm counts in Dragonstorm, extra mana for Burn- it's been a good little card for me in various decks, and I think it's better than Dark Ritual for Commander, considering that it scales nicer. There's not a whole lot of 3-drops I want to cast on Turn 1 on black, versus the amount of spells at 5 I want to play in red, ya know?
Aaron Durbin i tend to use dark ritual to get high drop creatures out earlier. Like you i dont really need it for turn one three drops. If you saw my olivia video ill use it to get khalitas out earlier for example or to buff black suns zenith. Definitely better cards out there but it works well enough i suppose.
victor plitt There are many reasons I don't play the Curse/Dictate/Gratuitous Violence style cards. The biggest reason is the politicking- playing and dedicating more stuff to HH only makes for more targeting of him. If I played the Curse specifically, that person would be the one trying to hate me off the table. Over the years I've been able to successfully navigate moral victories with the deck based on the concept that HH is an "equal opportunity" damage dealer, and in doing so, my opponents have learned to let HH do his thing before I get killed off. This is because he's often brought out when we're trying to play faster games. The other reason is that the cards we want to play really need to have individual purpose versus combo-purpose when we get to that point in the mana curve. Planeswalkers, Burn Spells, Creature Threats- these are all the things that I am looking to play at this point because we've squeezed time with HH's ability, and I need to end the game before other players stabilize. If you notice, nothing in the deck costs more than 6 to cast, and the average for the whole thing is 2.86, which is really low along Commander decks (I've found it's usually between 3.5-5).
Thanks for the thought! Definitely a card I'll consider. One of the compelling things about this deck that keeps it fresh is the ability to rotate cards in and out, so I'll probably pick up a copy soon.
Nice combo. I might try them, but I don't think I'll be getting them together as consistently as I would like. Individually, these cards might be value- we'll have to see. One of the biggest pitfalls is the equip cost on Pariah's Shield if I'm trying to use it.
Pretty Good deck, I have a few that would shut it down as built without changes. I've gotten off a first turn Iona a few times in my Kalia the Vast Reanimator.. Also my Zurgo and Narset could potentially rape it. Potentially not. I have won 4th turn with Narset before. Most of those games result in my opponents conceding even 5 - 6 player games sometimes before turn 6 - 7. I've also been experimenting with Sen Triplets some, It hasn't lost many games which surprises me... Yes I's affinity but my build imo seems rather poor. lol. Either way its a fun deck and can piss off friends with infinite turns etc.
