On Monday 19th October 2015 Ab 608 "Passchendaele" begins the start of Steam Incorporated's three week tour around the South Island Railway network. Ab 608 was built in Christchurch's Addington Railway Workshops in October 1915 and is a fitting tribute that this locomotive returns to its birth place briefly 100 years later. We follow most of the sector from Picton to Christchurch along the stunning Kaikoura Coast and inland North Canterbury. Unfortunately 608 was towed in light steam by a diesel from Picton - Kaikoura due to a lack of KiwiRail steam certified drivers but she ran under her own steam for the rest of the journey to Christchurch. Sit back, relax and enjoy as we follow New Zealand's war memorial locomotive work hard south of Kaikoura on her homecoming run to Christchurch! Apologies for any wind noise in the audio.

Excellent footage, weather treated you well. Mind you, poor state of affairs when the national network can't provide a suitably qualified steam crew.

+struck2soon Weather was mostly good, did rain north of Kaikoura and was very windy in North Canterbury but luckily i managed to find protection from the wind. Thanks for the feedback! :)

No need for the long whistle blowing.

+MyPlonkerboy I agree with you. When I travel by steam train I do so for the ride behind the locomotive, the smell of steam, hot oil and the wheels on rails sound. Not to be deafened by the whistle being over worked..

+Daikenboy exactly I work on a steam engine and I work the whistle. The people on this trip on the ab commented on how great the whistle was

Umm the driver/fireman can blow the whistle when ever they want, they don't need anyone's permission,
