I always have a harrowing experience backing out of mine. Dam kids, always playing on my driveway. If I crush one more I swear I'm going to report them.
"Abandon Ship!" Everyone heads in a different direction. No site to site transport. There's always that one person that falls down during an emergency.
Well, for once: Of course they head in different directions with different exits available. And to beam all personel out, that would require a lot of beaming, probably more than the Enterprise-D is capable of at the same time without using transporter pads.
My favorite bit was the off-screen transporter chief. Chief: Hold your positions, please. **everybody was already standing completely still on the transporter pad** Chief: Prepare to energize. **what are they preparing for? they don't have to do anything** Chief: And...energize. **Actually initiates transport** It took him almost 10 seconds to _initiate_ transport after everyone was already on the pad and ready to go. That's a lot of dicking around for a 4 minute evac.
He did make the correct decision. There was a crisis that threatened the ship. He was unable to contact the Captain or the XO. Seeing as he is the 2nd officer, that makes him 3rd in command. In the absence of the Captain and First Officer, he has the responsibility and authority to ensure the safety of the ship and crew. And the crew comes first. The ship can be replaced; lives cannot.
There is a lady on duty - with two others. When Data is doing the comms thing, we cut to many crew - some are clearly in engineering next to the warp core which is magically active again :D
Always liked this scene. Data's first BIG command decision without the Captain present and he handled it marvelously. Love the music as the ship is reversing too along with the warp out. Data's like "Oh and Wesley" "Consider your Acting Ensign rank rescinded" lol
Fancy leaving the captain and Executive Officer onboard in an evacuation . Surely as second officer it was Cmdr Data's job if not Picard's or Riker's to make sure the ship was completely empty and no one left on board before the ship goes to warp so it can self destruct at a safe distance from anything.
@@U2QuoZepplin He tried to reach them but got no response, and the computer reported that the ship was clear. Data did everything required and expected of him.
@Lexington73300 Problem with that: One: That is clearly the Warp Core flashing like usual in the scene on the window, it's only for a frame or two at the top of the screen, but I noticed it. Which brings me to two: The Warp Core is clearly shown offline during the earlier part of the scene. So, this scene was obviously filmed at some other point and they didn't realize how wrong it looks.
@Lexington73300 according to the flashing warp core light, the hardly visual warp core reflexion and the fact the woman sits behind the glass wall seperating Geordies console from the core (at the console where Geordie remodulates the shields against the Borg in "Best of Both Worlds"), both her and the man in yellow are in main engineering. Thins is probably a shot for another episode or simply an error.
Why were they walking in the first place? I would expect an automated evacuation procedure where the computer scans for all lifeforms, searches target locations like big rooms and corridors on the space station (some safe place on the planet surface, or the escape pods) and automatically transport everyone away. OK, it would be boring compared to people walking for their lives. ;)
@@zvpunry1971 Nevermind that the Galaxy Class doesnt seem to have any escape pods, which would´ve probably been faster in this situation... Point for the Sovereign class.
They were mentioned in "Star Trek: The Next Generation Technical Manual" but never shown in an Episode, maybe they weren't installed yet. But according to that thing, they also had dolphins and whales on board... ;)
I still wonder, how fast those Turbolifts are. Geordi and Date had only 45 seconds to evacute the ship. Even with empty corridors i doubt, they could ever made it in time to the next Transporter Room. The next Problem i have with those scenes: The Enterprise is "slowly" maneuvering out of the Dock. Why didn't anyone come up with the idea to use the next Transporter to beam aboard the Ship and take a look at what's going on there
3:50 This is Starbase 74, the Enterprise magnetic field is regenerating. Lt La forge : What a minute how is that possible?!? Lt Yar : That changes *nothing* ! 🤔 ...it kinda changes the fact that the ship is going to blow up. 😐
Tbf It looked like Tasha never believed the ship was going to blow up. That's why she ordered Worf to assemble a security team as soon as she heard the news.
@@Bitchslapper316 She doesn’t have enough information at that moment. All she knows when she makes the initial order is that there is a problem in engineering.
It never made sense that he told Wesley to do all those things. My guess is that he just wanted Wesley to relay the information about what he (Data) was going to do.
And then you have data and Laforge calmly using a turbolift to a transporter instead of doing a site to site transport, despite only having 41 seconds before the ship explodes.
@@InquisitiveEngineer Rather like these recipes 'demonstrated' on RU-vid that are supposed to take - say - fifteen minutes and you know full well that's going to take a whole lot longer than fifteen minutes! Anyone who has ever cooked knows!
0:24 To quote captain Styles from Star Trek III here: "Bridge, this is the captain. How can we have a yellow alert in space dock?" Well Styles, here we have RED alert in space dock! XD
Starfleet Efficiency. Data tells Wesley to set the ship for automatic departure and away from any inhabited areas, then tells everyone to abandon ship. So, a thousand people trying to evacuate with less than 4 minutes and they don't even fill the transporter pad - you'd think that they'd pack people in with a long lineup of people waiting to get out. (2:10) Then Data and LaForge go back up to the bridge and do what they told Wesley to do... Why?
You'd think, actually, that the massive starbase would be running a whole lot more transporters than could possibly fit in the little starship parked next to it.
If the transporter can only handle 6 people that's all it can handle. There may also be a gangway, emergency transporters, and the cargo transporters. There would also be shuttle craft and shuttle pods that could be used.
Transporter technology really seems to improve over the course of Next Gen. By Voyager they can beam up the entire crew site-to-site in one go. But in TNG first series it still seems to be pad to pad as often as possible. Still agree the 4 minute timeline seems implausible tho!
I don't know but I guess Bynars would expect such eventuality and so they would prevent crew from beaming back to the ship. Perhaps they raised shields at the same time they restored the containment field.
@@Lukas-Trnka Or used low Level Transport scramblers. Or time to go to Transporter was >= Time for the Enterprise to leave. As the Admiral in charge explicitly said at 3:45 If it takes more at least 40 seconds to go to the Starbases Transporter Room, then by 4:00 in the Video it is already too late.
Those are.. um.. emergency access panels, just in case you need top open the window to, say, evacuate via the window in a space suit becasue the door won't open, etc. Yeah, that explanation makes enough sense. Let's go with that.
According to the computer, the Galaxy class has at least 20 transporter rooms, plus all of the transporters in the cargo bays. My god, that's a big ship.
Data "if the anti-matter is released the ship will be destroyed." La Forge stops in his tracks and looks at Data like he is an idiot La Forge "No shit Sherlock" Data "Geordi this is no time to bring up my favorite holodeck program."
Just can't get the staff needed in the 23rd century. Note even with the federation to recruit from, most are white and human. Must be the poor food and lack of promotion to command. Lower decks are just full of zero hour contractors
True, considering the enterprise c was destroyed in am unexpected battle against 4 warbirds and this enterprise herself crash landed on a planet after it's battle with a bird of prey.
@@MrFuzzwuzzle plenty of starfleet ships used to have thier family onboard but after during the Dominion war and after they started to remove the familes from thier ships. Also during the Dominion war ships was being sent to the front almost bare boned sure they had weapons, shields, sensors and systems needed for battle but luxury systems like holodecks and extensive science labs was not installed
Two important observation from that scene. That “acting ensign Wesley dude” was the first guy off the ship. 2nd that bald Commander Quintario was a little ruff grabbing Tasha arm. ( She should have knocked him Out)
"Nobody on duty next to the highly destructive reactor core to get the critical warning that the ship is about to blow up" Uh huh. Even in Starbase, you'd have at least a skeleton crew onboard to monitor critical systems and handle things in case of an emergency like this.
I think you are forgetting that this all was a hidden attempt to steal the ship. So no surprise the engineering crew was somehow called off and captain and first officer were isolated in the holodeck without knowing that something is going on.
Engineering was manned. They were using the computer to try and adjust the containment field until it hit the point where the ship was in danger of exploding. That's when they left. Nothing says they have to die if there is no chance to save the ship.
Warp core was shut down. It is independent of the antimatter storage. Magnetic containment deals with the latter. No need for a crew in the reactor core. Any issue with containment sets an alarm.
I'll bet when Commander Quenteros heard that message from Wesley about what is happening he must've been in absolute shock at learning the ship he was in charge of building was about to explode.
I thought that it was pretty cool that, despite that this all takes place in the future, Data still uses a centuries-old maritime phrase to order the evacuation.
They made a conscious effort, in both TOS, TNG, and otherwise, to maintain old fashioned maritime themes. Both in the rankings, orders issued, and uniforms.
Lol! You gotta secure engineering first if the cause is related to sabotage, so secure first (security) send in engineering second. Plus...🤣 You know no one listens to Worf!
Not sure. Q appears on the screen in the very first episode and Worf tries to shoot it. "Lieutenant! Do you intend to blast a hole through the viewer?". Apparently, it is more of an occupational disease.
Geordi and Data have 41 seconds to leave the ship from the bridge They enter the turbolift then beam to the space station. 41 seconds wouldn't have been long enough to reach the nearest transporter room therefore it must have been a site-to-site transport. Why didn't they just do this from the bridge?
4:00 Quinteros : _Grabs Tasha and points at a window _*_completely filled_*_ with the Enterprise D_ Look! Your ship is almost clear. Tasha : Where? I don't see anythi...Oh!..there it is!!! You're right. Thanks for pointing the ship out to me.
1:33 Starfleet starships in the 80s: earth tone, carpeted hallways with little alcoves for plants, and a man wearing a dress in the background. It truly was a more enlightened time.
The way they just stand there and watch the enterprise leave after being informed that there is no danger to the ship. They conveniently forgot about transporters when there was clearly plenty of time for a site to site to the ship.
If they are trying to evacuate everyone then why, when Wesley and some other kids beam out, is there on five people on a transporter capable it beaming six. Was Wesley THAT unlikable that no one else wanted to be on the transporter pad with him
The main reason I think that Wesley gets grief is that people expected adult main characters, not a teenager growing up. Which is exactly what Wesley was. As for how it ended, blame the writers for screwing up that up as well.
Gotta admire Data's devotion to duty and details. Despite the fact he thinks the ship is about to be vapor in a minute, he still bothers to make a log entry about the emergency.
Evacuating into a space station that ENCLOSES the ship when you've got 41 seconds left until it explodes but it takes a lot longer to get it out of the station... kind of pointless. The explosion would destroy the whole space station.
They ment they had 41 seconds to beam of the ship before the ship exited the dock and went to warp, not 41 seconds till the ship exploded. They programed the ship to leave the dock go to warp and explode as far away as it could from them and anything else inhabited
@@darthnihilius9071 Yes... but taking a starship without permission is far different to having the most powerful ship of the time (the Galaxy class) facing a warp core breach inside the station....? I know it would have called for more screen time.. but part of me thinks that someone on the station would have called for red alert, with all ships to clear the station.
"We only have 41 seconds." They make it to the teleporter. "You don't have time." 60 seconds before the ship goes to warp. They just sit there and stare at it for a whole minute.
Did anybody but me notice the error at 2:05 to 2:10? The transporter will beam 6 at a time. They're in an emergency with people lined up to beam off, and only 5 are on the pad.
wow, the more you watch this segment, the more issues with continuity you see, "they ask where is the captain and first officer, the computer responds", all decks empty ? Why not they are not on the enterprise ? Also didn't they tell Wesley to set the computer to auto pilot out of the station, then they show up later doing it themselves? And they only have 41 seconds left and they go to the transporter via turbolift ? Why not transport off the bridge ? Poor transporter chief who had to wait untilt he last second.. And the ship is going to explode in 4 mins and the computer doesn't bother to audible alert anyone or go to red alert immediately with an announcement ship wide when the lethal issue is detected? In later shows like star trek generations the computer loved yelling things out automatically. Also geez galaxy class starship as 20 transporter rooms and 42 decks ? Didnt we only see no 4 ? Also why couldn't they beam back to the ship when it was still exiting out of the station.. gotta love early episodes with all these "why did they do that" moments.
Ship's computer was basically shut down for certain functions. The voice you hear is the voice of Starbase 74's computer what is handling those functions for the duration of the refit.
Engineering had already declare saving the Ship a lost cause. What were they suppsoed to do? Stare at the screens intently until the last second to make sure at least *someone* died?
@@Willpower-74205 It's so much of a stock shot that it makes NO SENSE. La Forge SAYS there's NO ONE in Engineering to Wesley, but that's Engineering. Forget about the Warp Core being lit. That shot shouldn't be there because the plot says no one is THERE.
You spend months on a starship as soon you get to a space dock and I'm not needed on the ship I'm getting off the ship so I'm guessing most of the ship personnel were already off and they most likely do run abandon ship drills.
Early episode, they were still getting their footing but this one wasn't too bad. Note the computer's voice regarding the containment field was not Majel Barrett's.
i see an error in the making of this scene, when mr data is announcing the abandon ship warning, it cuts to the place where there are two crew members, and if u look at the window u will see the warp core is online , but when they were in the enginering the warp core was offline.
I thought of a footbal team running out of energy from improper dietary ethic(s) & not enough food level comparison...."the field is deteriorating", lol. Good job Star Trek Next Generation!👍
General_GR anti-matter containment began to regenerate, taking it away from the possibility of a core breach, therefore enabling it to be longer than 4 minutes
