In today’s episode, we’re stepping inside of an abandoned castle just a few hours outside of Paris, France.
More than likely, this castle was originally built by a French nobleman during the early Renaissance period and at the time, it was one of the largest castles in France, boasting 15 bedrooms, 11 stables, a great dining hall and a full time staff of servants and cooks to work for the family.
Throughout the years, it changed owners many times until it was finally abandoned in 2003 when the last known family to live here, suddenly moved away and left everything inside after the father of the family died.
And for nearly 2 decades, it’s remained a mystery why they left all of their belongings sealed inside this majestic place they once called home. So join me as I venture into this secret 15th century castle to step back in time and find out what’s still left inside.
I'm Jeremy and I explore abandoned places. I document all of my explorations from around the world to shed light into the dark world of decay. Follow my adventures at:

@Abandoned Nashville : As you asked: TRANSLATION of the SCRIPTURE on the MARBLE IN THE CHAPEL (old French): "Mr Maulnori, Lord of d'Aubigny, Romenay, Dienne, and other places, Councelor of the King at the King's Court, died in Paris on the 1st of August (year faded), has ordered through his last will dated November (faded year), to perpetually conduct two holy low masses that will be served in his parrish at d'Auvigny. The 1st on the day on his death for the resting of his soul as well as his father and mother's souls, and the 2nd on the day after, during his wife's lifetime, and after the death of his wife, the day of (... becomes unreadable)" ----- Nothing really incredible, but as I really enjoyed your video, and you asked for someone to comment translating this marble, thought I'd repay you the favour CHEERS

The room with the sewing machines and books is probably where the servants made clothes for the Family and staff, curtains, upholstery etc. And the desk plus books were probably where either the Housekeeper or Major Domo kept the financial books for the Family, keeping a track on household expenditure and records of things like purchases, repairs and maintenance.

Jeremy - @ 18:09, you were remarking on the bedroom bookcase not having an actual keyhole in the left-hand door. If you look at the right-hand door, you will see an inset box lock mounted into the door. This style of furniture will have deadbolts on the inside of the left-hand door [often top and bottom] and then the right-hand door will have the locking mechanism. Even for the wealthy, this was a cost saving measure, so you only needed one lock instead of two. You'll frequently see these types of deadbolts on French-style double patio doors and only one locking door.

8:30 it's a testament written in old French. To make it short, the guy was named Claude Maulnori was Lord D'Aubigny and King's Consellor, he ordered masses to be done for his death, and the death of his father and mother (probably living when he died) and also for his spouse.

I have seen this explored several times, but I do have to say I really enjoyed yours. I love the way you pay attention to detail, and you work at the history of the places you explore. It was not uncommon for castles or big manners to have their own chapel, and sometimes their own Minister or priest. I’m not sure if that was because of travel, or if the nobles actually had others from their community, come to worship. You were the first person I’ve had mention that there might be a fountain that would’ve been in the front, and that makes a whole Lotta sense, the checkered floor as opposed to the wood floor marks the service areas compared to the family living areas. Such a cool place. I hope they do get to save it! Thank you for the wonderful explore, take care!

You are assuming that financial hardship equates to less appreciation for history and beauty. That is quite a leap, obviously. It is entirely possible (likely even), that the former owners loved their home enormously and took great pride in everything about the home; but the primary breadwinner died unexpectedly and the remaining family members were unable to pay the maintenance bills.
@SocietyofIdiocracy
@SocietyofIdiocracy Год назад
@@mikejewpants4099 Can appreciate your argument, and agree...you just misunderstood mine. Wasn't referring to the family who lived in it, or the extended family of those people. Was referring to all the people who have money that decide to build new homes and lavish mansions instead of restoring what has already been built. My criticism was that rich people always want something new instead of restoring things that a previous generation worked to build/maintain over long periods of time. A lot of these old mansions look way better than most things we build nowadays...so why not invest in the past and love something other people may have spent decades if not centuries loving before your time. Do you agree?
@mikejewpants4099
@mikejewpants4099 Год назад
@@SocietyofIdiocracy I agree with your sentiment and slightly disagree with your generalization, that "rich people always want something new." I know plenty of affluent people, who love buying older homes and restoring them. I also agree with your sentiment, that this old home has charm and craftsmanship that is unheard of today. The beautiful old doors that are crafted at a curve are especially remarkable.

@@mikejewpants4099 Agreed. That's what I do for a living, 3rd generation contractor. Knowing what it takes to accomplish some of these architectural masterpieces makes me appreciate them that much more. My dream is in a handful of years to buy one and spend my twilight years having it restored. Seems like the appreciation for the past and their accomplishments is lacking in my generation and gen z. Know there are people who do appreciate it, and think it's awesome you know so many people who do...wish more felt the same way. Surprisingly a lot of these properties are fairly inexpensive, it's just the money it would cost to bring them back to life. I personally think it's worth it though

Just a couple of things. There's no such thing as a butler's pantry nor butler's staircase. The pantry would have been managed by the cook. The staircase is the service staircase, used by all the servants to traverse the castle unseen. There should also be "parallel" hallways, which would allow the servants to go about their work without being seen by the family and any guests. To really understand what you are seeing, it's really important to learn about and understand how people lived in the time the building is built. You can then have a much better understanding of the configuration of the building and the rooms you are entering. Just a suggestion. It would be a much better experience if you have a good understanding of the time periods of when the buildings are built, as the buildings are built according to how people lived.

Butlers pantry IS a term that is used, but not for the time period in which this Chateaux was built nor for the area. It was/is a term used in Britain and in America with the term popping up in the 18th century. The term was more commonly used in the Victorian Era. It would absolutely not apply to France. It is, however, the same general definition as it was supplies for the staff. A butlers pantry main function, however, was NOT food storage, although some valuable entertainment related items may have been store there, like wines and liquors. I work with a lot of antique furniture in the southeast of America. There’s items of furniture called butler’s cabinet, secretary, and pantry. Some of these are combined, usually I see combinations like pantry/cabinet. Recently, we had one MASSIVE piece that was pre-Civil war that had secretarial functions to as well (letter racks, wax, ink and pen holder and a pull out writing surface. Traditionally, the butlers pantry was NOT for food, it was traditionally for serving items. Namely, it stored silver items and valuable serving sets. There is a locked section of the cabinets that was paned with glass and the key was typically held by the butler. Logs and accounting books were also stored in the doors. Most of them also had large drawers for the more valuable linens, candles and such. Basically, the items that were used to impress visitors. In wealthier homes, it would be an entire room with this furniture types built in that would be near the scullery and kitchens, but entirely separate as steam and smoke could damage, discolor, or impart an odor. The Biltmore Estate in North Carolina has an absolutely MASSIVE Butlers Pantry. They have a video and a few posts showcasing this. Many Plantations in the South have them, but I have also seen them in 1700s estates in NJ and northward. The actual pantries built into buildings morphed into furniture like I described above for those that wanted to elevated their status but didn’t have the space to dedicate an area completely to it. I believe the filter is American. It’s a term that is used now WAY too commonly, and too broadly, but how he was using it matches with my association I have with Historical homes/manors/mansions in America. However, Butlers staircase is not used, but we also had servant passage ways and staircases in historical homes. Plantations homes have them far more expansively.

Wonderful, awesome video Jeremy. You show great respect for the past. Excellent commentary. My heart breaks to see the black mould. The roof is probably very good, just a couple of places causing the mould. I hope somebody restores it. Ashes to ashes, dust to dust. So sad.

This place has been abandoned for 20 years and you think just now people are there to loot it? I suspect the guys following you out are the reasons why everything previously belonging to the former owners has been left untouched.

Though I understand the interest in viewing old chateaus, filming without permission of the owners is, at best, ill-advised. In France, inherited property cannot be sold without the permission of all heirs. With inheritance taxes being so high, many who inherit large estates cannot afford to pay the taxes; thus, property sits vacant for years until sold. Filming inside chateaus with furnishings intact invites thieves to steal items of value. That’s how so many chateaus are stripped of historical interior elements. I suspect a caretaker has been looking after this property. Did you have permission to film? How were you able to gain access to the property? Did you secure the property before you left it? Remember, someone else owns this property.

My questions re access as per yours and posted on another 'abandoned' castle video. Great to see the interiors but morality, quite apart from the legality, is a concern.

One may wonder why these owners abandoned their castles like that. In France, there are many abandoned castles for sale and cheap. It might be interesting to investigate and understand their stories.

❤❤❤❤❤ I literally am crying right now. The beauty of every room just transports me to when the family lived there. This is by far my ultimate favorite home out of them hundreds that I have seen. Its just so sad that this opulent home has no family to enjoy it and to hear the laughter of children. Mother earth wants this home back. I wish I had them money because I would buy it.

I just discovered your channel a couple of days ago and I am loving how you take time to show everything and try to tell the story of the past inhabitants. I would love to see you add an actual historian or student of foreign culture to your group. They could help explain the usage/purpose of the rooms, how the inhabitants might have lived, etc. I do know in the past and even today, the more affluent class had separate rooms for the husband and wife. I think that is what we were seeing in the red bedroom (masculine) and the blue (feminine) bedroom right next to it. This also explains why we see only ladies clothing and accessories in one room and men's in another. Plus, the servants' quarters were decorated according to their station in the home. The more elaborate was the quarters of the long term/more valued servants. Rooms with multiple beds were for lesser maids and wait staff that lived inside the home. Just FYI. You do a great job and I look forward to watching more of your videos.

It is beyond sad sad, it is CRIMINAL that if a property of such esteem with so many precious irreplaceable treasures inside, is left to either decay away or be an open invitation to unscrupulous thieves. Previous owners for any number of reasons may have abandoned their processions, but the LAW, in the name of preservation, should be allowed to step in after a certain length of time and enquiries for the benefit of future generations. Thankfully videos like this highlight the importance of the situation. Thank you so much for posting.

I just stumbled upon your RU-vid site. Question: once you walk thru these amazing places, do you report the location to anyone? To explain, like anyone that has an interest in purchasing the properties? Do you research into the Families that lived in these now abandoned properties? It is just so daunting to believe a person/family/caretaker could just walk away. You are stunningly obedient to not touch/harm any items no matter how amazing they are. I am hooked!

It's not abandoned. The grounds and structure are maintained. However to maintain the house in a living condition is very expensive. Well over 200k per year. Assuming you want to heat it. Given the ongoing program in France to encourage the restoration of these buildings, it is likely it will be sold to someone with enough capital to renovate it.
