The plant you showed at the house is written in Portuguese, it has the name of Maria Angelina Vasconcelos Maya e Albuquerque, I got a shock when I saw it because I am from the Vasconcelos e Albuquerque family, who went from Portugal to Brazil in 1800’s
But if your family left for Brazil in the 1800s, this can't be your family. This family was in Portugal in the 1800s as the palace has only been abandoned for 30yrs. There are many Vasconcelos e Alburquerque families, but they aren't necessarily related, as is the same for any other Portuguese family name. Many unrelated families with the same last name.

Should talk with the locals to find out the history and family, there may even be family in the area that could provide some information. So sad that all that family portraits were left behind!

if they were really to decay no one would have bothered replacing tungsten incandescent light bulbs for money/energy saving ones.i know many people living permanently in homes that have never ever used an energy saving lamp yet

It just blows my mind when I see these fantastic places left to sit and decay. All the beautiful architecture, antiques, history and family memorabilia is so sad to be left behind. Absolutely love all the tilework. Thanks for another great video.

When I saw the folded clothes of the young lady, I had tears thinking the last person to fold them was the owner so long ago. These videos always make me emotional.
i can suspect someone is hiding antiquities and books there until he or she can sell them. must be some sort of economic delictive activity, probably money washing by investing in antiquities.corrupted politicians for instance; or proole owing astronomic taxes. thr owner or some kind of worker may be using locked rooms yet, at least from time to time

The Olympics took place in Germany in 1936, and the pictures in that photo album were related to the Olympics games which was when the Nazi's were at the apex of power.
I don't think so. The cover says 1937, march 3.-13, Berlin. Because of the group photo, it looks like a conference or something like that. So I looked up, what was in march 1937 in Berlin and I found this: "In Berlin hatte die Arbeitstagung des Weltrundfunkvereins begonnen. Sie dauerte bis zum 13. März. Themenschwerpunkte waren die Wellenverteilung und das Urheberrecht gewesen." = The working conference of the World Broadcasting Association had started in Berlin. It lasted until March 13th. The main topics were wave distribution and copyright.

The Olympics brought the world to Germany so using the principle of parsimony it seems to be the simplest answer. And the pic of the German Olympic swimming/diving Stadium is a strong evidence. Why else would they be at that particular venue? I mean we are only talking about a few months difference, but yes the 1937 date is suspicious. Could they have had film developed in 1937 for a 1936 trip. We did not used to have digital cameras. Speedy film development was pretty uncommon. Then again they were minor aristocracy so they might have just stayed on in Germany, or simply been part of the Portuguese diplomatic delegation. The possibilities are endless! Cheers!

Ahh, this was such a beautiful find! It really should be a museum if no one is going to live in it ~ my goodness, what a lot of history in this place! The books, dolls, sewing machine base, photos, furniture ~ wow, it had it all, even a chapel! On the old stove, the reason there was a water spigot is because they would heat up a large amount of water all at once in the reservoir ~ stoke the fire on one side, heat water on the other. Those stoves were the ingenious modern appliances of the day! Also, I never realized it before ,but I think when that place was built must have been in the early 1700's, because of how thick the walls were, how narrow the hallways were, and the fact that they had a built in chapel. Oh my, I would love to know more of the history of that place! Also, in case you ever encounter a chapel or religious altars or shrines again in your travels, you should know that climbing around on top of them is very disrespectful. Going behind the stairs and looking out was not bad, but standing on top of the altar....oohhh...it's just not respectful. You guys are so careful usually, and so I am sure that you didn't mean any disrespect, but you should know that regardless of whether it's a Buddhist or Shinto shrine, a Christian altar, or a Muslim or Jewish synagogue, you should try to be as respectful as possible. That is someone's place of worship to their Deity.
"God bless this house" Huge home for a huge family. WOW! Such a beautiful alter! They didn't want to be seen outside, too many people with questions. Everything they needed was supplied, even a church. They kept to themselves, I guess that second photo album explains why!
Maybe the Nazis found our about them being religious. If so, they may have had to flee. Strange things happened during that war. I laughed when you said," A church. No way" I'm sitting here saying, "Yes way." 😂😂
I think the side room is a quiet room for mothers with very small children, my wife is catholic and the church she goes to has one of these rooms off to the side when my daughter was about 6 months old to 2 yrs of age her and my wife would sit in there with other women and children cause as we all know little o es are noisy
I think more than one family has lived in this building some of the original items are still there from when it was built, but another couple moved in some time after the other family fled (probably during WW2 given the photos we saw) and they brought some more modern appliances/items to live in the modern age! Did anyone notice the energy saving globe in the light fixture? So sad to see it rot away its a historical building the family never came back and the place hasnt been looked after or maintained some of those floors are sketchy! If this place was where I live it would be heritage listed and looked after and repaired back to its original glory.
yeah, there was a compact fluorescent style bulb in one of the fixtures. It was one of the earlier ones where you could swap out the bulb from the base which had the electronics in it. That's when they thought CFL were here to stay.

I don´t know where did you get the information that it was from an important man, but the papers you found on the desk where directed to "Exelentissima Sra. María Angelica de Vasconcelos Maya e Albuquerque", so at least in that time the house was owned by a noble woman. And it was abot a remodeling, it says "Actual" on the top and "Asked modification" on the bottom.
Thank you for the video. Sadly, there are lot of abandoned homes on Portugal. It was common for manor homes to have their own private chapel. Not all the chapels were inside the house. In my hometown, 2 manor homes had the chapels right outside.
Wow, that living room and entire home is stunning! It's a shame that this home isn't being historically preserved. I bet it would look AMAZING restored by a family. I'm always saddened by family pictures left behind. 😣

A lot of Portuguese have emigrated from their regions to the main cities or other countries, leaving many houses abandoned. At the death of the parents in the countryside, houses are very often left to fall apart as well. I can imagine somebody from the family returning here from time to time, every 3-4 years or so ...
I watch a lot of these types of videos I love learning and seeing how people have lived in another time. I really enjoy the history on each place you visit . Your videos are like I’m watching a documentary and your voice is so nice to listen to. The video is not all rushed and shaky you give a person time to take in and appreciate what is being shown really professional on the part of yourself and who ever else is helping you. So many of these types of videos are hard to watch because the camera is going so fast I get motion sickness and they are loud and excited like children visiting the zoo for the first time. I, too, love these videos but I de died today to go looking for different presenters because the ones I was watching are exactly like you said..they act like excited kids and also they move the camera far too fast..as if they are not even really that interested because they dont seem to give the viewer enough time to really get to see the things they are supposed to be showing us! These guys, on the other hand, are magnificent and really great at what they are doing! You can feel the video creators have the same passion for the history and mystery of the lives that inhabited these houses as we do. I am not going to watch those others at more. Just the Bros of Decay.
Correct! I have one, it belonged to a family member and it was gifted to her in the 1890’s. Silver plate, and the little brush fits into the “dust pan”. It now resides in a bow front curio cabinet from the same time period, from the same family member, together with other antique items from my family.

One of the photos is of Luís de Albuquerque Pimentel e Vasconcelos (1795-1882). If I am correct, he was the father of José Maria de Albuquerque Pimentel de Vasconcelos e Soveral, the First Barão de Fornos de Algodres (Baron of Fornos de Algodres). I am not positive, however, I believe that the location of the estate is near Fornos de Algodres, Guarda District, Centro Region, Serra da Estrela Subregion (east of Viseu). The title of Baron of Fornos de Algodres is now extinct; there are no other holders of that title.
The dusting pan was used to brush crumbs from the table cloth between courses. I have a photo album that I inherited from my grandmother and it probably belonged to her mother. It is covered in the same type of fabric (minus the metal trim) as the one you found. I am currently 71 y.o. and my grandmother was 91 y.o. when she passed away in 1990.
The tiles are absolutely gorgeous. How do they get the brilliant colors and crisp designs? I love ... love ... love them! Also beautiful woodwork on the staircase. After seeing the 2nd floor it made sense why there were so many bedrooms at ground level. Amazing find when you got to the chapel. It was also amazing to see the photo albums until you came across the possible link to Nazi Germany. That was chilling.

To me, someone was living there not long ago. It is way too clean in some of the rooms, like that Library. Pringles didn't start until 1967, so that can with the keys that was in the desk had to be after that for sure,but it really does not seem like it's been vacant for 30 to 60 years, other than the antiques and photo albums, but they may have still been there from generations gone by. The doll house appeared to be made of cardboard. I had a Barbie dream house in the late 60's that was made of cardboard and opened up like a suitcase almost, but unfolded. So, I think people were there in the 70's and possibly 80's even. I would love to know more about this place. I LOVE the tiles in it as well. Thanks for a great explore.
Or even after the 80s. Bc the microwave looked pretty modern. But still, why even if people still came around there occasionally, why do they leave such beautiful things to waste. Those books 😍 they need to be protected

Jordie I have to correct you & Leslie u were right.those were my little pony dolls from the 1980s.trust me I was a child of the 1980s. That is what the original dolls & cartoon looked like.just like strawberry shortcake dolls changed in the 2000s but had a different look originally. Sorry Jordie 😉

This house was once beautiful! Family and children running thru the long hallways. If you listen, can you hear the tiny voices of the children! Is there a museum that would take the furniture and pictures and put all this on display? So sad for it to just fad away! Thank you for sharing all the homes you find! I agree with all the your other fans...lol... It is a great building ... I'm curious to know approx how long the train tracks were dug in after the home .. At first I thought it was going to be a bit of a marketplace and hotel or something ..... Odd how close the tracks are ... What I loved the most was a toss up between the beautiful wood work and detail of the head boards .... Also the huge ancient photo album .... I loved it , so amazing how well kept it was yet sad the fact that it got left behind for whatever the reason ... Another great your you guys ... I also love your nice gentle touch of TLC as you guys go through a place ... Making sure to be mindful of each item you touch and the card of placing it back ..... I'd too would love to take some of that furniture and put it in a truck and take it home...That goes against all rules in my book , but it's nice to wish and pretend ... When you guys were leaving the room that the towers were connected to I guess with the iron holders behind the door with an old wooden trunk I wish you guys would have checked it out but great video like always
I thought the same thing ~ I was like "nooo, you missed that trunk...." Also, the trunk of linens may well have had little treasures underneath and through the linens, that's fairly common.

I agree with you on the furniture, especially when the home is starting to rot away...much of the old stuff was hand made and some of it is from wood we no longer have and should be saved!
The tiles at 02:25 say God bless this house. It's quite common to find things like that in old Portuguese houses, as well as tiles with the Virgin Mary. And the bottles at 34:43 are usually used to store olive oil, at least all of those that I've seen were used to do that.

Dear Leslie, hello. These people were associated with Nazis. I am 98 yrs and a d many Nazis moved to places like Portugal Argentina, Columbia. My niece married into family of Nazis in Columbia. Her father in law married a Columbian woman and when they fled Germany they took slot of money with them, just as this family did. I am Germ Jewish and I am a researcher for many years and this is a Nazi home who fled Germany. Thank you Lad for sharing!

We do indeed have old mansions from as early as the 1700's. Check out Biltmore house in Ashville. The library ceiling will leave you awestruck. I have toured many old mansions or palaces as he calls them.

There was a reason why Portugal wasn't in war with Nazi Germany. The establishment had close connection to Nazi germany, but this was the older generation and probably the ones who owned the palace last and died, the younger generation couldn't afford to stay on, or wouldn't and there might have been a lot owned in taxes to that is why it's left to root. But what a great place thank you.
The book was probably from the 1930's Olympics in Germany. As a wealthy family they would have most likely attended and that would have been a souvenir from the games. The home was beautiful but had many plain aspects to it as well like the hall ceiling which was plain boards. Stay safe and have fun. Welcome back Jordie.
The faucet on the stove upstairs was for the water that was added to a storage section on the stove. water was heated by the fire that heated the oven in the stove. Hot water all day, as long as the oven was hot, cooking and washing.
This was absolutely AMAZING !! So odd to see all of this left behind !! I think these people left here in a big hurry !! That German book left behind was really odd !! I so enjoyed the tour of the house and to have seen its situation in relation to the road beforehand. The antique beds are breathtaking and yes, it is sad to see such beauty left unprotected. The linens in the hallway chest, if they are old, may be as valuable as some of the furniture. When I watch your videos, and I do so enjoy your commentary and the care you show to each place and item, I also read many of the comments. There is often something of interest added by a viewer and this time I see many that are critical of the young woman who was standing on the altar. I did get a shock when I saw that and I am going to assume that it was done out of ignorance rather than malice. The heresy mentioned would have been appropriate because many altars have a crucifix in the place where she stood and her arms were spread as Jesus' were on the Cross. I will give her the benefit of the doubt that she did not intend to offend but it is also odd that she would have been unaware of the symbolism. Sorry for the discordant note on your video presentation but the event is most unfortunate and you may consider an edit of your video.

A big grand house like that would of been occupied by German officers of very high rank,and even used as command post's.So it is possible that the family that lived there pre war could of been thrown out by the Germans (or perhaps they fled before the Germans reached there) And maybe some post war family members moved back,hence the modern bits that we see,but of course they would not have been as wealthy as before the war,and perhaps could not afford to keep the house in repair.Sorry just my "vision" of what I see 😉 was good to see Jordy making a return to the Camera,he has been missed.
Ian Camm Depending on where the property is, it might not have been cost effective to house military officers there...they were generally given a mansion near the capital city, and a headquarters set up there as well. There is not enough signs of a German occupation...as we have seen in so many places we KNOW they took for their use.🖤🇨🇦

Wow, what an amazing place! I have 4 things to say about this video: 1. You guys have a great brother relationship. Cherish it, there are many siblings in this world who don't get along. 2. The old handwriting. When I was a child in the 1960s they started teaching us cursive writing around 3rd or 4th grade. I know young people today who can't read cursive. Sad that they have trouble reading historic documents. 3. Your castanet dance made me laugh! Thank you for brightening my day! 4. This is one of your best explores yet, in my opinion. Hello Leslie, I love your show and the beautiful places you show us. I've been involved in Southern US history giving tours of homes and towns and various properties. One item I wanted to point out to you that you have highlighted in several dining rooms, like in this episode. You show the "dust pan" with the attached little hand broom. That device is not meant to ever be used on the floor. It is intended to be used between clearing dinner dishes between courses. If you have a crusty bread that is messy then the server after taking the plate will brush up the crumbs and leave a clean area again for continued dining. On to the next course. Correct me if I 'm wrong, but I believe that many times these places are abandoned due to taxes owed or taxes owed on the estate. And, in some countries, it's possible to refuse acceptance of the estate due to the amount of taxes the heir(s) would have to pay out of pocket.
