Well, we are off to rescue another forgotten and abandon muscle car.... A GTO at that, to add to the collection of junk GTOs we have rescued. This story is unfortunately a sad one, I bought this car and the 1955 Buick Roadmaster Sedan from a lady whose brother used to own them. Sadly, he passed away at a young age and the cars have succumbed to mother nature. But both are worth saving. I love Pontiac GTOs- the original muscle car! 1966 is the first year of the GTO being its own model and not just a trim level of a LeMans. It's also the last year of the 389ci Pontiac v8. The 400ci came out in 1967, with a few other changes physically to the cars, the taillights being the main one. It pains me how rough this poor GOAT is, 1966 is probably my favorite year of GTO. I have a dream to resurrect this machine as a ratty and rough driver. The maroon/ maroon exterior and parchment interior is really cool, but the car might be more than I have time to tackle. This particular 1966 Pontiac GTO was pretty sweet with the 389ci v8 and an odd 2 speed automatic transmission backed with a safety trac posi rear end. Air conditioning, power steering, and power brakes. Plus, no vinyl top, which really saved the car from being any worse than it is, and a reverb stereo system. I may get the PHS documentation for the car just in case there's anything special about this particular GTO. It's really cool to see that the car has a 1966 Florida Tag on it.
Here is the back story I was given on the car's history - The GTO came from Anchorage, AK by way of Mike C. Mike’s parents were both in the Air Force. They were at Tyndall in the mid-70s. The family moved to Anchorage sometime in the back half of the 70s. Mike left Alaska sometime before the rest of the family - probably shortly after he graduated high school which should have been 1981. He flat-towed the GTO to Colorado (Denver?) where he attended a technical school. He and the GTO ended up in Panama City sometime before 1985. Then sometime after that Hal the late gentleman that owned the car ended up with it. He also had a gold 1969 GTO which had unfortunately already sold.
