Swap that 20R for a 20RE with P/S and a 4 speed. Least that's if you REALLY want a decent no hassle ride overall. Solar panel might be a good investment and a camper top if thats your gig.
"We got no rear brakes, the battery is overcharging and boiling over, my inverter burned up, we're leaking coolant, we're leaking oil, i have no heater because i had to bypass my heater core, i got dash lights on..but i am super stoked with the Toyota...its doing great" ....LOL...Thats AWESOME...such a positive guy.
Elwood: It's 106 miles to Chicago, we got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark...and we're wearing sunglasses. Jake: Hit it. 😎 -from “The Blues Brothers” (1980)
Good day Mr Redline. I live in South Africa and here Toyota is like what Chevy is for America. True story is that my mother was born on the back of a Hilux next to the road because my grandfather did not make it to the hospital in time. They lived on a farm that was about 2 hours away from the nearest hospital. I used to own a 1985 Fj45 4.2 straight 6 petrol Land Cruiser that I rebuild from the ground up. It took me almost 10 years to do so as parts has been discontinued a long time ago. I recently sold it and bought a 2016 model 79 Land Cruiser V6 4.0 petrol. I just love Toyota. They are tough and reliable. Keep up the Good work.
Sooner than later I will, but also, I’ve got other projects coming up that are taking a bit of my spare money and I don’t daily drive this or need it to be super reliable.
As a 70's mini trucker from Cali you might be interested to know the Toyota was not even on the map. The Datsun was the most popular followed by the Courier and Luv. We didn't have any Toyota's in our club. I have a museum quality 73 V8 Luv in my garage now.
Hey there! I appreciate you reaching out and sent you a message! If you don’t receive my text, I also have an email that you can reach out to, RedlineranchYT@gmail.com! I seriously appreciate the hilux and I’m honored to be able to give it the attention and love it needs!
Oh yeah my cousin also made his 73 Hilux disc brake. They make or at least used to make a kit. A LOT of people modded these trucks. I was born in 1971 so remember when they were popular and everywhere. Damn good little trucks.
I have heard the 18R engines prefer higher octane gas. 18RC liked 86 . Try a few gallons to find out ? Also you keep mentioning another engine. My cousin had a truck same year as yours manual trans. Yellow. He rebuilt motor and put bigger tires on it. Big tires zapped power. He changed cam, carb , intake and exhaust. Made a difference. It was acceptable off road after mods. May be interesting. My cousin did this back in 1985 so there may be more or less power mod parts available now.
I’m just about to drive a first gen 4runner from one side of Australia (Brisbane) to the other (Perth) OVER 4000 km’s. After buying sight unseen. I will do a service on it before hand but she’ll make it no worries 👌 I love a good road trip adventure in an “untested car” I will be documenting it on my RU-vid channel “Shed to Beach” Love your videos mate you have a new subscriber from Australia 🇦🇺 Also love Padricks videos at Elevated Overland, been subscribed to him for a while, 👍
Just found your videos. Great work on what you done to get her going again. We just spent the last few years redoing our 73 Hilux, only 49K. Been in the family since new. They only came with 4 speed, didn't come out with the 5 speed till about 77. Oh yeah the looks you get when your out in it, feels great knowing all the work we put into it. All I have left is to recover the seat. Say anyone know where the horn relay is located on the 73? that's the only thing I can't get working.
I suppose you could have stopped by Napa Auto Parts in Chama to see if they might have a voltage regulator for the truck. I know it's an outside shot but it's possible.
owned a 1970 hi-lux spent a lot of time in the junk yard pulling parts - every nut and bolt broke or striped out - truck could not keep up on the highway even 40 years ago
I had a similar overcharging problem with my 1979 Toyota Pickup. Turns out that they made 2 different alternators and two different voltage regulators. The right voltage regulator has to be paired with the right alternator or else the alternator will overcharge the battery. Apparently one was a north american cold weather addition. It took a new voltage regulator and a couple of tries with the alternator to get it right. The numbers on the back of the alternator have to be right, not the wrong one with a wiring harness attached that supposedly switches the wires around. That did not work.
How good is the Hilux with the leaks over charging it still made once described as been unbreakable reliable and indestructible well th8s long drive prooves it
Awesome video, The speed limits in 73 topped out at 55 (gas crisis) so you were definately pushing the envelope. That paint will come around with a little elbow grease. 👍😎🔥
3.4 swap it. More truck power, more cruise friendly, probably better mpg than what it gets now and ive never seen it done so it will be something a bit different
Man that truck looks just like my Chevy LUV I had in high school. Even the e-brake is the same. I think the LUV had an Isuzu motor with a 4 speed. We filled the bed with pea gravel once and got the front end off the ground. We put in bucket seats raised up on 2x4's. The height give a little more leg room. I'm 6ft and its tight in those cabs.
2 months and you don't repair the simplest thing? at least a new alternator right? or a window, a simple 20 dollar radio, those things can be repaired in a couple of hours. poor truck
I’d never cut the dash up for a 20$ radio, a rear window and seal is almost impossible to find, and the alternator over charging was found on this trip. It’s gotten more attention and maintenance in the last 2 months than the previous 20 years. Plus with more than 10 vehicles to maintain and work on I’d say it’s getting more than it’s fair share of attention.
