Abandoned Airplane Landing Gear Build is DONE! but NOT Strong Enough!?

It’s uncanny how often you’re going thru the same stuff I am with my projects! I’m just staring at my old landing gear/drum drakes designing a new setup. Looking forward to hearing how your went!

I am happy to see that you came back to the fab and rebuild of the gear. It was actually kind of exciting to see that you experienced the same issues that I had with the gear squatting once completed. It was truly a time to crunch the numbers. When the plane sits on the gear supported by it own weight is one thing but taking into consideration of the landing loads or side loads and keeping the gear from splaying out will be another. Good job Jonas. Does not look as if Ill be able to get much flying this year due to just getting into the crop harvest season but hope to get plenty of taxing in. Rick Clendaniel

Hey Jonas! I enjoy your channel and have for many years. Congratulations to you and Silvia! I and another EAA friend were taking turns hand pooping an old 1929 Byrd for a Young Eagles first flight on the 4th of July and I wanted to lend a tip on hand propping after my friend cut his hand nearly off. The technique is to take the blade when it is parallel to the ground and with one hand on the trailing edge, pull the prop with you as you walk away. Walk by and away from the propeller; less chance when done right to become an obstacle of the prop. Keep up the good work and my best to your beautiful wife.

Real good problem solving, Jonas.

A couple pieces of roofing flashing with some oil between them under the tires is a good way to test gear, it'll let the tires splay out easier, what you want in a test. A deeper cabane will make weak bungees work more effective. More drag and weight of course!

Dude, get a 3d printer. Something like a $600-700 Bambu Lab printer will make so many projects a simple 4 hour print. Also, Bambu printers don't lose much value... for some odd reason. So it's a cheap-to-own tool that can do a lot of things. Or, if you want a bigger printer, Qidi Xmax 3. That engine cowl would be super simple once you understand the CAD software.

If you can put the bungees on by hand, it will be to loose. Look at the old pipers. If you think the bungees are too tight, that should be about right.

Looks awesome! Man, real shocks are so much better for suspension dampening. Maybe it's not needed in such a light airplane and I do like your idea of using the MTB shocks for rebound dampening only.

9:26 take 10 minutes or less to make a set of tire chocks and tie them together and throw them in the plane. I've seen some of the places you've landed, you could definitely use them ✌️ p.s. congratulations on the new baby! 😁

G,day Jonas from Sydney Australia. Thanks for showing the manufacturing of the composite fibre air duct. I would not have envisioned its airflow to the back cooling fins. Just a thought: some plumbing PVC pipes have thick rubber O rings for use in landing gear suspension. 🌏🇭🇲

I feel like 4 trampoline springs in place of the bungees might be what you need, may be less weight also

Those bungie cords will develop a set over time. So you will loose a lot of your spring when the aircraft is just sitting around, they also don't like extreme cold.

Ben Kairys has a dual brake lever on his stick that he likes a lot. I think he even sells them 3D printed, but I'm sure you have the skills to do it yourself.

i put a J3 cub shock cord ring betwee the axles with a steel cable back up in case the shock cord broke and i biult mine just like yours simple and fast to do
