I am super impressed with your first weld - seriously!!! I remember my first attempts and I reckon I had to go back and sharpen my Tungsten tip a dozen times before I got a decent weld, you must have good steady hands and a natural talent for it. There’s money in that skill Marina, even without a qualification: I can see you paying your way around the world doing all of those quick and simple stainless welding jobs and repairs for other yachties that a fabrication yard wouldn’t be really interested in. If I was to go cruising again I’d either take a welder and some materials; a sewing machine and canvas; or some refrigeration gas, tools and parts to repair fridges on other cruising yachts - there’s always a demand for each in marinas wherever you go and when people get to know that you have the gear and skills you’ll never be without work.

To stick two tubes together that well as a first try at welding has got to be a win. Most people start with much easier staight lines and don't get any better results.

I love that nothing phases you Marina, keep on trying all of the tasks you need to carry out to accomplish your refit. Many women would step back and let the man do the "technical" jobs, but you seem to really enjoy getting stuck in to laying up composites and and welding. I've never done any welding myself, but I think that you have done really well for your first attempt. I'm sure that with a little practice you will shortly be producing really professional looking welds!

so Stu goes on vacation touring all of Yurop in a car and hitting up pubs and all, while Marina learns one of the hardest types of welding techniques and proceeds to start fixing all of the boats in the South of France. I maybe exaggerate a slight bit, but it was entertaining all the same. Very well done.

Nice start on the welding. IF you will forgive me offering a few tips. Welding in a darker environment help avoid reflection off the inside of the mask making the weld puddle hard to see. Get the helmet setting right so you can see the puddle well. Be carful not to expose your neck when welding or you will get a sunburn. Do whatever you can to shield the weld from wind. There is a type of cup for your welding torch called a "gas lens" They help direct the argon towards the puddle. Helps with wind a bit and lets you turn your gas flow down. Also allows you to stick the electrode out more for better visibility of the puddle. Not too expensive. Keep the tip close to the weld. About the diameter of the electrode. It will help you control the puddle. have fun and practice a lot.

Good job on the first attempt of TIG welding. As for pointers and tips have a look at the countless videos on TIG welding here on youtube. For me, I'd say ditch those heavy and clumsy MIG/stick welding gloves. For TIG you need just minimal protection against UV and heat, so find some thin leather (gardening?) gloves which will help a lot with feeding in the welding rods. With that also wear a long sleeved shirt against the UV radiation.

Brilliant first attempt Marina! What was really good was seeing you handle the Argon bottle ! It is vital that you keep the transport cap on until the bottle is needed. You also lashed the bottle, this is super important. When a bottle is dropped while moving without the transport cap and the then exposed valve assembly breaks the bottle is like a guided missile and will destroy everything in its path. Something I have seen! so these simple safety steps are always the ones to take.

There is a welding sleeve you can use that is like an arm gaiter. It will cover that extra distance so you won't burn holes in your shirt. Maybe they have those where she is? They are quite inexpensive here in the U.S.

It's important to grind a small bevel on the edges on each workpiece, before you tact your work pieces together before you weld. It you will give you better penetration in your welds when you don't bevel it than afterwards when your clean up the weld it won't have enough weld to hold the two pieces together. If you know what I mean.

Tig welding is the most difficult of the welding techniques if I'm not mistaken. Never done it myself, I actually never got any successful weld together myself. Dad's tick welder was made for heavy duty and I tried to weld thin stuff with it and ended up burning holes into the bits instead of anything else! 😅 So: You did really well! 🤗
@danielboughton3624
@danielboughton3624 28 дней назад
Gas is more difficult because of heat management issues with the flame spreading about. With modern tig and a pedal it is not so difficult but it is quite a bit slower than stick or wire feed.

Marina, you can be REALLY proud of what you have achieved ! At first it's the will of trying, of risking something. Second: the combination of "welding" and "women" is possible, of course, but, to be honest, it is not verry often seen. So: stand out, be proud of what you are trying to carry out. You can be proud of yourself, Stu can do also, so: everything is fine. Keep practicing ! A tipp: try with straight pieces of metal first. A 90° weld is easier to do for a beginner than a round tube. Doin TIG you learn speed, distance and all the adjustments on the machine easier with 90° welds than instantly want to do tube welding. This is the "next step". Good luck and best regards from Berlin, Germany

The first thing I learned was puddle management. Get a scrap and keep the puddle at the same size without effort. After that practice moving the puddle in a line and after that dipping the rod. There are gloves for this kind of welding that are thinner/softer material so you can feed the rod with your fingers a bit at a time instead of by moving your arm. Your first effort was quite good and of course women make excellent welders and did quite a bit of fabrication for ww2. Now my teacher would say oh, nice - now break it to see how good the weld is. So sad when you get your first nice weld and show it off only to have to destroy it! The blobs on the inside mean you likely got good material penetration which also means it is probably an ok weld.

4:47 Buy the thickest gloves you can find, winter extreme cold insulated. Then wear gloves liners. It’s armour against vibration. In my 20’s , I could sand and needle gun all day long. Now in my 60’s I can go about 20 minuets bare handed . Then my fingers start throbbing from accumulated nerve damage.

Hello, another week with more interesting work items. Marina your welding work seems to be very good, for first time. Now I have a question about the engine bed & keel. I saw an internet article that a Gulfstar suffered major keel damage and water started coming into the boat rapidly under the engine. I am sure you have checked very thoroughly for any & all cracks around the engine bed in case of keel damage your boat will not flood. Ok, looking forward to next week and a new video. Ciao. geo

Try to find some soft leather gloves like Riggers use. Those thick heavy gloves make it so much harder to feel what you are doing. If you are just tacking up gloves are optional. Watch out for wind blowing away your gas

Learning all the jobs that need doing gives you confidence in the finished work! Remember to keep the gas flowing on the weld for 2 to 3 seconds at the end of the weld, it will keep contaminants from entering the weld puddle. For horizontal welds, a small 'figure 8' motion will give a smooth bead. And for the strongest and most leak proof weld, grind the edges to be joined to form a 'V', you can fill the gap with rod as you go...You're having all the fun while poor Stu is stuck in rainy England!

A good first try. If I may offer two hints that will improve the strenth? consider introucing a small gap between the two parts to insure the weld extends fully into base (inside of the tube in this case). Secondly, consider increse the speed of your feed and keep the heat more localized to the weld area. Just turn up a little more amps to account for this. A little more pratice and your well on your way.

Any repetitive work especially sanding can be very depressing for the person doing it, but you should always look out for the result which if the sanding has been done well is very satisfying and a reward for hard work.
