alright ! welcome to the Vdub world HA ! im a VW guy....they never die unless they sit in the rain and snow for long periods. The oil leak could be rear seal or oil cooler seals... usually when they sit along time they need both and hopefully its not a cracked case... sometimes junk is stuck in the idle jet on the right side of the carb and it wont idle or the electric cutoff isnt wired up....or just rebuilt the carb or remove disassemble and clean. The front suspension is pre 1965 so brake parts are most likely 58 to 65 stuff... german or brazilian quality brake parts are good.. the cheaper stuff is usually crap... socal, jbug and cip1 are good online stores but stay away from the super cheap stuff.... happy bug in ! id call that car finley lol not really but its cute like finly

The obvious fit for this is either a Subaru Turbo swap or a built billet 2875cc twin carb (roughly 400hp) bug motor. See the LSXclallade vid from a couple weeks ago about the bug in the shop.

Hey, don't forget to do a full follow up on this. I want to see this in-progress and when done, with huge smiles on your faces zooming around. I recall this kit was called a Bug-Gottie the Bug part from the slang term for the VW Beetle... 'bug'. Aftermarket steel floor replace kits are out there, near perfect fit.

I built one of these in 1991 when I was in high school. I put an inline six manual jeep drive train in it . I even made spoked aluminum rims like the real car. it looked pretty legit and sounded good to. I have no idea ware it is now. many cars have come and gone sense then. Great vid.

The leak is probably from the o-rings on the oil cooler under the fan shroud. I had a VW bus that leaked a lot from there. I also had a bug that I replaced them.

Add some plywood for the floor do the brakes and should be good for around the neighborhood trips. But y'all should really build a proper frame, drop in a 4.2 liter Chevy straight six vortex with fuel injection and a small turbo give it a good paint job then off to vintage races.

That floor pan is trash. I remember these I was putting together dune buggys for customers in the 60s & 70s. Its 12 volt & that's a good thing. My first job was a dealer VW mechanic. Have fun !!

Just north of here, silver lake sand dunes, used to be a place called Appletree Automotive. They were known for building those VW motors up to 500hp ! Just in case you want all the options for a powerplant, lol...

An old chevy inline six from a early 70s truck would be cool. I think they make hop up parts or even the old jeep inline 6 maybe. Not sure you will find a working inline 8 to put in it.

Let me suggest that you spend monies from views and patrons. I suspect you will be really surprised at the amount of views and patrons that will follow you if you continue to do do just what you did today. I used to rebuild Bugs for flipping and my son was in “Hot VWs” featured as a hot rod VW specialist. Although that ended many years ago for both of us, you could put a 2300 cc engine in your Bugatti for under 2k. Doing floorboards and all the little idiosyncrasies including paint would attract a lot of viewership and provide funds needed (perhaps more. These days, it’s possible to have your cake and ear it too. The internet opens both the DYI and the pay for view markets for your informational and funding potentials. Good luck and keep her ripping..

That's a ground pounding 52 horsepower right there, or 40. My old Beetle back when I was in high school had 36 horsepower. My uncle's 1957 Johnson Seahorse had 35 horsepower!

First thing I would do is replace the drums up front, if not with discs and rotors, then at the very least new slave cylinders all around. but then again, you could always Fred Flintstone that ride :)

One thing that is inexpensive would be to rebuild the existing motor currently in the rear weld that area to return it to factory and move the motor to the front if their is enough room new clutch and driveshaft if rock auto carries VW parts narrow drag tires like what you put on the front of Rockie your drag strip car and how about the same color of red as your Pontiac gto and lastly it’s better to be safe than sorry to check over the gear box and I think that should be it I look forward to seeing what you decide on what to do oh yeah rebuilding the carburetor removing the fuel lines blow it out and as the oil leak it’s more than likely a oil pan leak because the gaskets are more than likely dried out

The engine is the best part about that car lol I had one just as bad I think i paid like 250. We were just as excited on the first day. a few days later we stripped the good parts for a buggy and got rid of the rest

Don't do that!! Pounding on the batter connectors, you risk breaking the connection between the battery post and the plates inside the battery!

Rebuild the motor stock with a set of baby Weber 34 mm dual carbs do the brakes and bearings. Fix the floor and find a set of cheap wheels and tires.

As rusty as the floorboards are, you better take a good look at the rails. They may not have much structural integrity left. My parents got rid of their beetle when my dad went to change a tire and the jack punched a hole through the rail. So will this be your ride on for Drag Week next year?

I love you two, I laugh with you, getting things to run, brings back a lot of memories, I myself would bring the car back to a beautiful street rod and take it to the car shows it would be a blast, then later you could sell it if you get tired of it. I would give anything to have it and drive it I live in Ariz. and am a retired service man who has built a lot of rods in my time, I enjoyed it and love when your wife gets excited, have fun.

Good old Bug! First Check the Valve Clarence, then Install new Covers! That ist the better way to get it run smooth! Then clean the Carb and spend some Money vor new Sparks. You will have so much fun with this Project !!!!!

Please don't hammer on the battery anymore. I used to make those posts at a factory and they are NOT tough enough to beat with a hammer/wrench/whatever. You crack the post on the inside and your new battery will be junk. That said, what a cool project! Can't wait to see what you do with her.

PLZ rebuild that engine .... an oil leack there at the case is no joke ...if you're lucky it's just the crank seal ...if the case is leaking you have to rebuild it anyways because then the whole engine has to come apart ! ....maybe upgrade them to a 1700cc with new piston and cylinders ? (me personaly wouldn't go above 1700 because the cylinder walls gets realy thin ). Have fun you guys !!!! Can't wait to see you get into that build !!!!!!

Welllll, its a vw kit car...But its cool anyhow. Get a hold of the VW Life boys for ANY VW info. It wouldnt really translate to a front engine car. Just put itback the way it was.

That's the biggest rat nest header manifold I've ever seen. Definitely make it a front Engine with some type of 8 cylinder straight engine. The blower would just be icing on the cake. You can put an NA Supra inline 6 motor in there that would be cool.

Engine sounded sweet! I have a 1936 Austin Seven Ruby. When I bought her in th 90s she hadn't been ran for over 30 years. Like you, I got her going and ignored holes in floors, etc. I think it was about a year before I had her on the road. 20 odd years later I still have her, and she still gets used. Have fun with your project!

If you want to see what could be with the Bugatti check out a video no Caterham 620R . Find an old Cayerham for the chasie , install a Cosworth and go.

Keep the bodywork as it is the now as full rat Bugatti spec. Just repair what needs done then spend the time and money on mechanicals to get it running sweet.

There is a guy down the road from me that has VW kit car, MG or Jag kind of thing, and he is putting a Subaru Turbo in it and the fake radiator will now be real. This thing was probably fun with 55 horses, I can't wait to see it with 300.
