Hyder Alaska, is one of those towns that I always think is going to blow up into a travel mecca, but seems to just stay under the radar. There is a handful of part time locals, and a smaller handful of full time locals, but the rest of the city basically sits abandoned. Like so many of these small north coast towns, Hyder came to life with the discovery of gold, and in a few short years was a bustling little city. As the years went by, the population of Hyder dropped and climbed, nearly as frequently as the tides of the Pacific beside her, and I fear that she is on her final decline now.
The residents that remain today are passionate and proud, and they are working hard to maintain what is left, and I do believe there is potential for this little town yet. Never the less, life here does not come without a fair bit of struggle. Hyder is only accessible by ship, float plane, or vehicle through British Columbia, and funny enough, being the southern most town in Alaska, it only covers a nine mile section of land. Cell phone reception is provided by Telus, a Canadian company. Power comes from Stewart, BC. There are no grocery stores, only a gift shop and a bar.
The forest is full of relics and history, the ground is still quite rich with gold, but with the challenges and isolation, Hyder stays pretty dormant. If you do get a chance to visit Hyder, make sure to stop at the Glacier Inn and get Hyderized.

I lived in Stewart when I was 10 years old, my stepfather worked in the mine. I remember we went to Hyder for New Years and our can got stuck on the way and someone picked us up in a truck, and my Sfather left the pinto on the side of the road. The party at the bar was all families, and pretty drunk parents..lol. We were all stuck at the bar for the night. One guy had a heart attacked and died that night, and they propped him up in the phone booth (i think it was a coffin??). And everyone had a shot of hyderize to honour the man… then they wrapped him up and put him on the back porch… When we got out late in the afternoon the next day, we found our car destroyed, a huge bolder had came off the cliff above and lander right on the pinto! That spring, when the airport opened, my mom booked flight out for her and us kids, and told my stepdad, “you can stay or pack up the house and meet us back in Campbell River, but the kids and I are leaving!” I have always wanted to go back.. I remember snow being higher than the telephone poles? Just found some pictures the other day…

I've lived in Alaska for the last 52 years, it takes a really special type of person and mindset to live in Alaska. The weather, lack of daylight during the winter season are the things that exclude most. I'd never live in this area because you can only access it by air or by coming through Canada which is expensive because of duty fees and limits and a pain in the ass.
@mikebritton8798
@mikebritton8798 21 день назад
@RussellBond-zh9qw yeah. You're right. It does take a tough person to live in Alaska. The lack of daylight might bother me, but I've been through tough conditions and would like to see it. The other thing is that I've lived in Nebraska all my life and, at my age, don't really have that much desire to pick up and leave. Too many connections here. But I sure would like to see Alaska.

It's sad to see Hyder slowly decaying. My first trip there was years ago, and at that time there were still quite a few little shops open. There was a couple of local horses who wandered the town and would come up to you or your vehicle looking for a treat. We had one of them stick it's head right inside the truck window! The scenery is worth the trip over though!

It boggles my mind how so many trucks, cars and equipment are left to erode. Makes me wonder why it couldn't have been sold off when not needed, had to be expensive at one time. Maybe just wasn't feasable. Having said that, what a great video, I really enjoyed that. Would love to see some more videos where you go into towns like this as I enjoy these types as much as the ones in the wilderness you do so well. Thank you again for a great video.

Thank you for another excellent episode. I was in Hyder in 2007 and it looks like there is a tad more happening there now than back then. One thing I recall vividly is a house where an elderly lady (very disabled) was selling photographs of the area that she had taken herself when she was younger and fitter. She said that she had moved to Hyder from San Francisco. I guess that she has passed now, but I'd love to hear from anyone who knows anything about her story?

Dude! How could you miss Hyder's most famous attraction? You gotta see the smoldering town dump on fire to see the scavenging black bears. It's worth a drive through. My theory on all of the busses is that Hyder was the final stop on a lot of hippy bus living tours from the 60's and 70's. On our road trip from California, my friend and I stopped at every bead shop we saw and bought a few random beads. After the trip, I made two necklaces as mementos. Caroline, I believe, sold me a sweet red stone skull that became the centerpiece of mine, set off by some red dyed pigs teeth from Brazil that were hanging on the rear view mirror of my friends VW Rabbit. And lastly... When we were there, our neighbors at the campsite were a group of dudes from Montana or somewhere thereabouts, who had bought a minibus from a college sports team and made a group roadtrip for the salmon run. They had been there for two weeks and no salmon came to join them. They had to head home without a single fish. At least they tried and had an adventure anyways. Keep on truckin' on!

For three days I stayed on St. Paul island in the Pribilof Island, about a day and a half north of Dutch Harbor. Part of the Aleutian Archipelago. If you want to get away from society, or you're trying to abandon any vices you might be carrying around with you. There is no better place to go to leave it all behind and clear out the clutter , mentally and spiritually. I love the Aleutian chain. Fished just off the coast of Attu and Agatu island. The bottom changes there. Beatiful coral reef, spectacular mountain peaks, The biggest Codfish I have ever seen. On one of the outcroppings that jutts out into the ocean. There is still an old wooden communications tower. It is truly a mesmerizing place to experience. Seen a flock of Bald eagles circling a mountain peak at the same time had a huge Stellar sea lion breech along side the hauling station, mooing. Yeah , they moo like cows.They would pick the Halibut off the hooks. The Seagulls and Fumars would land on its head and pick the pieces out of the mouth and teeth of the Sea lion. I got to see some pretty amazing stuff, fishing on a longliner for twenty one years in the Bering Sea and the Gulf of Alaska.

As always a great video when I got stationed in Fairbanks AK at FT Wainwright I drove through there I believe it was 1993 and it did look a bit different with more of the businesses were open . I actually fueled up there

My wife and spend a great deal of our recreational time up there, northern BC, Yukon, Northwest Territories. With out trying to be too manly or be "that" guy the bears up there are not the bears of say Yellowstone. Not habituated to campers so they run, given half a chance. I'm more wary of moose up there than bears.
