The man that fixes bikes says he's on meth and most there are on some drug. Respect for telling the truth. And he has a valuable skill fixing bikes and takes his job seriously. Very likable man.
Did you see that huge trashbag that was 98% empty he tossed in the trash, raised right he would have packed it out when full, or how about just empty the bag an keep using, total 🤡 Slab is a $hithole Bombay the Ski Inn rocks !
And then I’ll also found it odd that he stayed right on the Sult and see which he claimed was so toxic. It was a very good video though. As an overview. I’ve never heard of you before.
I remember the man that built that mountain. He would give people tours and they would donate so he could keep it up. I was sad when he said he was sick and when he passed away. There use to be RU-vid video’s with him showing his mountain /his art 🖼️ He was definitely happy!! ❤
I had the pleasure of going there as a kid in the mid/late 90’s and I believe it was Leonard that I met because he was still building onto it and it wasn’t as developed as what I see now. My family has photos but I’d have to track them down. Leonard was very nice and passionate about what he had created and as a kid, I was amazed at it.
When I was in the Marines we'd train right next to them. They'd dig through our trash at night and we were told to let them be as long as they didn't get too close to anything important. I grew up in Alabama so it was a wild experience. I'd never seen anything like it.
Yes, I especially liked her explaining the taxidermy scene at the dinner table of the deer. When she was telling him what they were discussing over dinner. That creased me up.
OMG, a lot of those clothes in Dotties bus were donated by people in Northern California, and I drove it all down to the slabs about three years ago. I can’t do it like that anymore, because I no longer have a cargo van, lol. But I had my cargo van loaded up with tons and tons of clothing and 700 pounds of dog food and cat food. All donated. The outside world is very kind to the residents of Slab City. I myself love the place. I have been going every year except Covid years, for about 11 or 12 years now. I stay as long as I can, helping, Andra Slaburbia with the dogs and cats. And when I leave, I take as many as I can/whatever Animals that can be adapted back up to Northern California. Thanks to Andra, I think we have gotten somewhere between 60 and 100 dogs/puppies/kittens out of Slab City before the intense, insane desert heat, and up to Northern California to get adopted. Every last one of them has gotten adopted. I will be heading there again soon. I really love the people and respect their reasoning for wanting to live in the Slabs. And I also respect the folks who want to live and lead a more private life there. I would stay there permanently, all year round if I didn’t love to travel so much. I can definitely stay in one place in my RV for a few days or even a week or so, but then I really want to scratch my itchy feet and get back on the road and find a new awesome place to go. For anyone who doesn’t know, Slab City has a pretty decent Facebook Page. You should join the group if you’re curious or interested in Slab City life.
@@richardstall4351 you’re welcome. I’m really happy to do it. And Andra is brilliant and got to mobile vet clinics that now come into the slabs once a month each, two weeks apart. So spay/neuter has really helped with the puppy population, and when people leave after snowboarding and leave there. Dogs/cats, sometimes very ill, behind. Andrew used to have to drive down to Mexicali to get medical attention for the sick animals. People left behind, and for spay and neuter, and also for medication for the animals. She is super dedicated and I’m so glad that I’ve been able to work with her. I always bring tons of stuff with me, and we either store it in a shipping container that is at the slabs until it can be given out specifically to the people who need specific things, or in some cases we just let people take what they need. Most people do not just show up and take a ton of shit, they just take what they need. It’s a good system.
Is It Illegal to Feed the Homeless? Generally, it is not illegal to feed the homeless, every soup would be shut down kitchen or homeless shelter would face some serious legal challenges to existing I'm talking Florida
Gotta give to them for living how they want, I think it’s actually brave and courageous to leave all of the amenities of living in society, we take so many things for granted.
It's awesome that Slab City is still going strong, I remember back when Leonard was still there (the man who built Salvation Mountain), back around 2008 me and a close friend watched Into The Wild, were deeply moved by it, and my friend took a roadtrip to follow a lot of McCandless' stops and Slab City was one of the places she went. She brought me back a DVD that Leonard was selling that told the story of Salvation Mountain, I still have it. I didn't know Leonard has passed but I also didn't realize how much time had gone by until now, lol. Great video, took me back to the 00s!
Your story is absolutely crazy to me because it's almost exactly my story‼ I got hooked also by the movie into the wild. Christopher mcandles, Aka Alexander Supertramp‼ I also went around the same time and met Leonard. I stayed with them hanging around salvation mountain half the day. We smoked a big joint together what a sweetheart of a guy. And it was a couple years after that he got in real bad health because he was still living in that truck in front of salvation mountain. Some people that knew him got together and pitched in and got him a apartment I can't remember where somewhere in Southern Cal I think. I think he ended up having diabetes real bad and had his leg or both legs amputated and then passed away about a year after that. But at least as last days he was well taken care of had a good roof over his head 3 square meals a day and people round them that loved him. Really loved your story blew me away. The funny part is I have never left the desert since I still live here now.
Also that day talking to Leonard I told him how I happened upon him in slab city and salvation mountain was from the movie. He told me that that big empty water tank just out of slab city Christopher had signed his name on there. But of course it was signed Alexander Supertramp. I wasn't sure if Leonard was right so I hiked out there and lo and behold there it was Alexander super tramp. Made me feel like I found a treasure that day
@@ahmritroets2596 I have the DVD, when I get a new laptop in a couple months, I will set up my external player and screen record the documentary that Leonard made, and post it with tags. my current laptop is so old that screen records and livestreams have really scratchy audio. But I will work on that!
Thanks for taking me on this tour ~ I think that Slab City is great for the right kind of person. I enjoyed meeting the folks you met in your video👍🏻💥‼️🇺🇸🙏🏻😎☮️
This is my first video of yours Ryan. The interactions you have with people is amazing to watch! Towards the end when you were having the taco bowl, you were speaking about you past travel's and something about how meeting just random people is so important to you. I always talk to random people and I mean always. Stores, gas station, drive-inn movie and so on. I am happy to see someone else believes this as well. Gotta tell ya, the way you video and talk to people AND make tacos on a video; it made me feel I was there! What a great feeling. Thank you Ryan, Bill
Never heard of this corner of earth. It is fascinating to see people create their own world. This is not for everyone, but for anyone. Thanks for sharing, watched the entire video.
I've lived here in the desert right down the road.Really like an hour away from slab City, and I've never been there.Your documentary was amazing.I loved it.Thank you so much
A view of Sandy Shores and the Alamo Sea from the Hippie Camp is spectacular. Cannabis-infused alien artwork made the trip worth it for me and Elisa "Liz" Macallen. "Once you go Latina, there's nothing mas fina!"
@@QuestofthenightI am someone who figured out this lifestyle as I been living here for 4 years, going on my 5th summer out here. It's quite simple...we use our toilets. Where does the sewage go? We dig a giant hole, cover it up completely, and that's our septic system. For running water, well RVs and trailers have pumps, all we need to do is fill the tank. But we also get water deliveries from local services who fill up our water tanks, and as for trash, we use a metal barrel and burn it, and then we take our cans melt it down into art work, or we just go out in town and find a dumpster to throw it away properly. Also as for 120 Fahrenheit, we use evaporation coolers. Depending on how well your EVAP works, it will cool the house down to 86-88 degrees, so you aren't dying out in the heat. BASICALLY, everything out here is more about how much work you put in your "property". We get electricity from our solar panels, or generators. I live completely off solar, and propane for my propane stove. This is actually about the same quality of life for everyone who lives off grid.
I REALLY like how the elder said that ppl out there are not lazy; they are “work ethic impaired.” And oh my goodness….that’s ME! And I could totally live out there and make my beaded seashell stuff all day long, until I get into a weekend festival somewhere in a populated part of the county, and set up my vendor tent & sell my craft art🎨
About 6 years ago, my kids' mom tells me she's going on a trip to California. She's taking our sons, early teenagers at the time, and they'll be visiting her friend and staying at her place. All was fine with me in the matter, and off they went. The next day I wake up to see pics of my kids and their mom hanging out in slab city on her Facebook posts. Her friend lives in slab city it turns out. She purposely didn't mention that. They stayed a good few days and had a decent time. But I was quite surprised when I'm casually scrolling through my Facebook feed and up pops pics of my sons posing with slab city folks in slab city.
Hi Ryan! Thank you for taking me from my desk in Scotland to a place in the world I might never have seen otherwise. I thoroughly enjoyed your presentation. Happy and safe travels, friend. :}
Have watched many of your videos this past week. This is the most interesting and compelling. Your grace, your summary. You’re a true humanitarian. As well as an interesting cook. Taco bowl looked amazing. Keep up the excellent work. Thanks for sharing your insights.
Yeah, well its not somewhere anyone would want to live, there are constant assaults , arson is a problem there and people there are likely on heavy stuff so when night falls its likely not safe at all.
Murders, rapes, and arson goes on at night. And there’s no help for you when that does happen, cops aren’t going to come out to slab city and if they do it’s gonna be you in handcuffs.
You are delulu, it's an enclave of primarily meth addicted pedophiles and sex offenders, it's dirty, smelly, hot and the dangerous, there are good people interspersed here and there but it's not comfortable per se, it's 1000% not safe, people are routinely murdered, raped, beaten and burned out, it's not Art, it's hell on earth, Sodom and Gomorrah for real
@@jimbeam-ru1my spoken like someone who hasn't an artistic bone in their body. Art is in the eye of the creator. If others resonate with a piece, that is great. If not, o well. Art is not something for other people. It's for the creator. Unfortunately, a lot of people who are not able or willing to create anything themselves end up being art critics of others' abilities. Of course, there are exceptions to every rule. When is the last time something you created by hand ended up on a video? I'm just curious.
@@user-ok9po8pp4q you're a brainwashed robot who has been convinced that beauty is trash and trash is beauty. Modern art was the first proof of concept in the postmodern era when the elite were proving to themselves that they could make the public believe night is day and heaven is hell if they wanted to. So they threw a bucket of paint at a canvas and told us it was art. and you believed them.
Probably talking about oxycodone when he says “blue pill”. To be fair meth users can still function just unpredictable sometimes, opioid users are usually just lazy af lol
Terrific video!!! This is the first video of yours that i have come across and your conclusion at the end was so good that i have instantly subscribed and now I'm off to watch more of your vids... Nice work and Keep it up!..
Really like you videos non judgemental and great content and informative, I have been told to stay out of certain neighborhoods while touring through Georgia but went and came across some of the most kind and generous people I've ever met.
Just because ppl are friendly to your face means nothing I have a feeling you didn’t grow up around those type of ppl I did they are not to be trusted all fake niceness
Not all people in this world are like that. Never meet Ryan yet but pretty sure he’s a humble dude. Don’t judge a book by its cover. I’ve been to slab city before myself (alone also) meet some super awesome people there as well. It’s their home and you have to appreciate it. We have our lifestyle and they have theirs. It’s all beauty in a different way.
In case anyone was wondering, Leonard Knight mixed paint with the Adobe clay and that is how it has managed to not peel under the heat of the desert. When the residents were being harassed by the government, they took soil samples and tried to blame salvation mountain for polluting the environment, but the tests came back okay. So they gave up trying to get rid of Slab city and salvation mountain. This isn't the only video about slab city but I fear If they keep making more, it will bring too many people into the area And the freedoms will be lost.
we have a stonehenge in washington state. outside of maryhill, which has a wonderful museum. it was constructed as a replica of the original stonehenge in 1918 as a WW1 memorial to the veterans in klikatat county.
It's amazing how much this place has stayed the same and yet changed all at the same time. There are pieces of art in East Jesus that I recognize, and somehow, the library and internet cafe look identical from years ago. There are so many more buildings and people than I remember from 8 years ago. Fond memories there. Thanks for the trip back via video.
Very cool video, I throughly enjoyed watching Slab city history. Amazing art work by them folks. Thanks for that adventure sir. Very interesting to say the least. ❤
Yeah, the bike dude was really gracious to offer you a safe camping spot. He knows that when people randomly set up camp out there they can easily be robbed by the nefarious element living out there.
Ashley, You’re trying way to hard to sound cool. It’s making you look silly, honestly. Admire people that have real integrity and live respectable lives with Christian values.
being in the marines: and being from ga. Seeing that for the first time years ago was dope. and we were going to our training ground. and the sun sets are wonderful!
😮I just now found ur channel and subscribed. That place was pretty neat. There are good and bad people everywhere u go, so i really seeing that place where they all had each other's back. Cant wait to see another video. Stay safe and cool out out there. ❤
What an amazing place. I sure do understand why people go there to live. I am 81 years old and life has changed so much it is unbelievable to me. By the way I think your tacos Bowl sound delicious . I just love black beans and corn together. You created an amazing video that was filled with great respect for people but you still live in Slab City
Hi there, I just kin😢 stumbled across your video tonight, and I absolutely LOVE your van!!!! I've talked about building either an RV or a bus/van similar to your van for a lotta years now. Something that allows me to get around, travel, and live in, relying on nature as much as I can. I would love to have something like your van right now, but I have to take care of my mother and my daughters first, so........ one of these days!!! Keep up what you're doing man, it's absolutely amazing!!!!!
Wow ,,,what an awesome video ! They are all good but this one was crazy good .So respectful and interesting interviews you did ! Nice job ! Beef bacon looked omg good ! Safe travels as always .
I think after a certain age elderly people should be able to live for free. This way they can enjoy the rest of their life with with less, and no worrying about paying for housing.
I've seen countless videos of people pretty much doing what you are and every single one has a little some different but all the people are truly amazing people and it doesn't matter where they came from or why they are there. So much talent with what they have to use for making shelters and they have concerts!! Music and so much more!!
at 1:16 there are two manhole covers in concrete slabs, wonder what thats for, sewage or water, maybe a well....I'd def donate to these people, society produces alot of waste that could help...good luck to them.
Be extremely careful, do you know how many murders have happened? Assaults? Rapes? It's a crime riddled meth encampment of addicts, pedophiles and sex offenders evading authorities
Taxidermy Dinner Party - crazy! Your videos never fail to be interesting Ryan! Thank you for taking us to such a variety of places and sharing people’s unique stories! House of Dots was great! Mind-blowing art all over slab city! Loved the history that you included. Thank you!
Hi Ryan, I only recently discovered your channel and I've been enjoying your content! I have some simple tips to improve your knife technique that aren't quite as readily available if you don't happen to have a chef in the family who's teaching you the basics. I've seen using one hand to hold what you're cutting and guiding the knife with your knuckles, you definitely should continue doing that and do it more (pretty much anytime you're cutting something), getting practiced/skilled with that makes such a big difference to your prep work and eventually massively increases your speed. Now for the simple tips that will facilitate that: instead of standing parallel to your kitchen surface/cutting board, you should stand at an 90° angle with the side that you're using for holding what you're cutting forward and your knife hand side away from the cutting board. This will make it much easier and more natural to actually slice/cut with your knife instead of just pressing it down. By making pulling motion across your body instead of the much smaller motion of pulling back when you're standing parallel. This also makes cleaner cuts, allows you to make much thinner slices and is just much easier and more natural. And one more little thing, if you want to extend the life of your non-stick pots and pans, you should stop using metal kitchen utensils with them, it scrapes off the coating a lot faster, consider getting wooden kitchen utensils. I don't know if you'll end up reading this, but if you do I hope it helps, or anyone else coming across this comment. I hope this doesn't come across as condescending, but as the genuine advice I want to pass along. Cheers~
I remember being out at Slab City one year during the Wasteland Weekend event, think it was the 3rd year it ran. Most of the people we met at Slab City were cool, but obviously as in all places you have to be respectful of peoples privacy, some places were peoples homes so you had to be careful about exploring especially if you weren’t invited. It’s been a really long while since I’ve been there, definitely cool to see the changes 😬 Also remember that market! We stopped there on our way home. Glad to see it’s still around especially so the people at slab city have access to what they need.
I have been to Slab City and enjoyed touring it. You did such a great job showing it. Some of those guys are a trip and you were so respectful as you spoke to them. I enjoyed the Salton Sea part too.
Heck yeah. Another great video Ryan! Without trying to spread any hate, whoever commented on your weight can kick rocks. You look great brother, as long as youre happy and you feel healthy, thats all that matters. 🖤
You look great Ryan, I actually thought you looked skinnier than usual. Either way, you're a good person and I have been watching since you started traveling. You inspired me to buy a van and travel too and I have!!! I did my first solo stealth, cross country trip at 56! I love everything you're doing ❤❤❤
I watched you before and I really enjoyed hearing folks. What they do to live is actually quite cool. This is the way our country would allow to live without paying TAXES and living priceless. They make some interesting stuff. I would rather live in the forest personally and underground. Thanks!
Ryan, you're one cool cat, naturally you get a huge like and a sub, and I personally wish you the best of luck in your future travels. Prayers of protection for you, your friends and family as you travel on the road, and may all your journeys be great ones! MJ from western Colorado
I was there the day Leonard came to visit his mountain for the last time. I got to say hi and shake his hand...very cool. This whole area is really something else.
@@kateramsay8462 he passed from old age. I met him a couple times in the early 2000s. I would ride my motorcycle from Ocotillo Wells out to the Salton Sea/Salvation Mountain. I even have a couple of postcards Leonard gave me still hanging in my garage.
I met Leonard after his caregiver died and he needed to move into a nursing home. I knew him for the last years of his life and he was a very sweet guy. I’m not sure if anyone knows the real story of his life before Salvation Mountain was born but he was peace loving and I don’t doubt the stories about him being a Vet. Thanks for the great video!
Ryan I just want to say I enjoy your videos and content in what you do and I want to just say keep up doing what you do and keep up the good work you are an amazing content creator van life videos are amazing and wonderful
Awesome video Ryan! I really love the history and context you add to your videos. I appreciate the time and research that you put into it too especially with the places like this that I have been to many times and I still get to learn more from your videos. Great work man can’t wait for your next adventure.
I wish they talked about how dangerous this place is. My friend ran away there when she was 13 caus of videos like this. They ended up being creeps and pedos, got her hooked on hardcore drugs and the older men there were taking advantage of her and the older women were jealous of her. I can’t remember how many stories of people getting shot/ physically assaulted she had but there were a lot of
I lived in a place like this, although not completely removed by society. These sort of "hippie meccas" pull in people that have fucked their life up, it's not like these symptoms would disappear.
