When out documenting old cemeteries we never cross fences, or gates, and respect private properties. If we are able to locate a land owner we request permission to document the cemetery. Most of the time we are granted access. This time we were not. This abandoned cemetery was recently purchased on a tract of land that was turned into a cow farm. Now, we would never presume to tell someone what to do with their land, but in the realm of historic preservation letting cows roam into a cemetery can quickly destroy the old and often fragile gravesites. Alabama law grants a right to access a historic cemetery, including for historic research and documentation. While we were denied access to visit this cemetery, if we wanted to push the issue we could gain access. However, out of being the nice guys that we are we don’t do things like that…. Alabama Code Title 35. Property § 35-1-4 (a) Owners and lessees of private land on which a cemetery, graves, or burial sites are located shall have a duty to allow ingress and egress to the cemetery, graves, or burial sites by (1) family members, friends, or descendants of deceased persons buried there; (2) any cemetery plot owner; and (3) any person engaged in genealogical, historical, or cultural research, who has given reasonable notice to the owner of record or to the lessees, or both. (b)(1) The right of ingress and egress granted by this section shall be reasonable and limited to the purposes of visiting graves or burial sites, maintaining the gravesite or burial site or cemetery, or conducting genealogical, historical, or cultural research, or, in the case of a plot owner, burying a deceased person in the plot. (2) The owner or lessee of the land has the right to designate the frequency, hours, and duration of the access and the access route, if no traditional access route is obviously visible from a view of the property, provided that the designation is reasonable for the purposes set out above. (c)(1) Any person entering onto private land pursuant to this section shall be responsible for conducting himself or herself in a manner that does not damage the private land, cemetery, gravesite, or burial site, and shall be liable to the owner or lessee of the property for any damage caused as the result of his or her access. (2) The landowner and lessee, in the absence of gross negligence or willful misconduct, shall be immune from liability in any civil suit, action, or cause of action arising out of the access granted pursuant to this section. I'm sorry....if a guy threatened me with a gun in my face when I was seeking to be gaining access to a cemetery that the law states you could have access too, I WOULD go the legal route, just to teach HIM a lesson. Oh...what was that beetle?
This is interesting to me. I live in North Alabama but from South Georgia. "GO DAWGS" lol Anyways, I've heard crazy stories about graveyards up here. Y'all please be safe
You two make a great team! Shame on the owners of the cow farm for not respecting the history they have on their property. Can't wait for the next video!
@@chicochi3 Yea, You never know what someone's been through in life to make them act a certain way. There's a lot of people that like to go out in the country to scope out places to steal from and seeing a vehicle that looked like that in your drive with two guys, that could make it a little worse lol.
@@pmichael73 It would not be the first, fifth or twentieth "farmer" to hide bodies of their victims on their land. The guy's overreaction is red flags waving!!!!
Oh,you fellas...if you ain't joking that dude should not have stuck a gun in my friends direction, that upsets me! Other Robert is an gentlemen and should be treated with respect. Asking access and being refused is one thing but being run off with a gun is another! Think I would have a talk with the local authorities at least, considering there is articles of access . I really appreciate all the dangers involved in your adventures to educate and enlighten us on all the interesting sites in your neck of the woods. The bridges at the creek were a high light, travel ways used to be quite different. I can remember in my childhood days going from field to field on my gramps's farm we traveled by farm wagon quite often up and down a creek. It was a way bumpy ride but we loved it!😊Stay safe my friends.
I enjoy the water explorations, there's something so soothing about the trickling, just like the crunch of the leaves in the woods. TOR is priceless love his humor🧡🧡
It's a shame for someone to be so mean, no reason to be so hateful. He probably thought someone would see cows roaming through the little cemetery, and destroying tombstones would make him look bad. Maybe he shot someone, and buried them there. LOL
It's too bad the land owner would not grant you access. Those guard cows really do a good job. It was nice to see the progression of the bridges from horse and buggy to modern auto. Keep Safe❤Keep Well ❤
You both have great eyes when you come to finding old abandoned cemeteries so sorry Robert that the property owner did not want you to share the grave stones but to pull a gun on you is very sad, all he had to to is ask you to leave. You both are very caring and honor peoples requests. We are so glad you are ok Robert
Robert's I love this Adventure it truly is a sidestep adventure. I think that Bridge #2 kept flooding as so they decided to put the big culvert in to help with the flooding so I am sure that's how Bridge #3 came to be Wished that Gentleman hadn't been so rude like he was. I hope Robert #1 was able to get some Picture. Then Robert #2 you mentioned River Ferries so People could Cross. Part of my Family on my Mothers side were River Ferry Operators across the Missouri River and the Old Grand River too. Now in ready for more.
Land owner probably saw your truck on the Walking Evil Dead series and thought you were zombies! Only mad dogs and video historians walk around in the midday sun! Another epic video.
My grandpa always said be careful of walking through water, there might be a cotton mouth waiting there. Awesome that you found those old bridges. Could you get a hold of some topography maps from the time period you're researching? it might tell you if there was a cemetery there at that time a road a creek; it would provide further documentation for the time period you're working with and less guesswork although I do enjoy the banter and your stories. I also have a feeling you guys embellish the story just a bit but it was great entertainment for Sunday morning. thank you ❤
Those bridge locations were really interesting, you are both very knowledgeable. I always really enjoy your visits to historical and forgotten locations. I don't know the man's problem, but it couldn't hurt to make him awar4e of his responsibility UNDER THE LAW, before those graves are lost forever. Cheers, Rik Spector
When my parents and I first moved to the country, our house was just up from the creek and the road went down the embankment through the creek and back up to the stop sign. When the creek flooded, ya had to go the long way around. About 5-6 years later, they built a bridge across. It was never as much fun
Dang!!!! I can't imagine either one of you joking about someone pulling a gun on you. That guy is a putz!! I don't think a box of Snickers bars would help his disposition either. Whew....Thanks for the calming walk afterwards. Hope you eventually found the cemetery you were looking for. :)
This cemetery is called Glass Cemetery. It’s much larger than it looks. The owner cut a driveway right thru the cemetery and drives over graves. Upon closer inspection bc I have been up to the cemetery you can see the depressions where the unmarked graves are. There are a confederate and union soldier both buried in this cemetery.
First was the original bridge, then came the bridge for wagons, and then came the modern bridge for cars. Building a new one was cheaper than upgrading the existing ones I think.
You for sure took a Sidestep adventure, almost for good😱 That was just uncalled for, especially if you were on the side of the road, and not actually on the property.....🤯 Or maybe that person knows why Robert should not be in the state of Alabama🤔 That for sure is interesting about the bridges....Be safe out there...Snakes are not the only bad evils out there🐾🦊🐺
Agreed. You are immediately that defensive and ready to pull a gun, you are hiding something that needs investigating. That's someone looking for an excuse to shoot someone. That's why some people should not be allowed to have guns.
We have an old cemetery on our land and in Georgia by law we have to let anybody that wants to look around or walk through the cemetery we have to and also if any animals are in a pasture around it we have to keep a fence around the cemetery where no animals can get in it!! If it wasn’t a law I would still let people c it if they wanted to
@@02autogt they were on the road taking video. The older Robert walked up to the guy when he came out to let him know what they were doing. The property was gated off. Go back and watch. The guy was being a jerk.
@@TheShootingShark I’m sure if the Roberts were in a marked car with credentials it may have played different, but just two guys showing up in an old truck might have looked suspicious. The world is a crazy place this day and age.
They don't want it surveyed as they plan on doing away with it, you should really contact the local authority and file a complaint and let them know there is a cemetery there.
Rooster ( the other Robert) “you scared you say scared.”LOL. Got watch those old Alabama guys they can be mean. That was a neat old area. I loved seeing the old bridges n trying figure out there time when in use. Did you see any old bottles? Braden will have to check this place out. Always enjoy watching Sidestep Adventures… you never know what the two of you will find. ♥️😊👍🐶
@@randomvintagefilm273 Yes it does apply to private property, read the law Robert put out above. Who ever owns the land can have a fence on it, and gate, but they are not supposed to deny access to the cemetery, to certain people as written.
@@randomvintagefilm273 If it was the ranchers familyonly I can understand that but the gun up the nose for people standing by a gate and politely asking to enter is not now or ever will be right. That man was stupid.
9:49 the bridges kept getting washed out so they said enough is enough...lets go ahead build a higher stronger bridge and you see it..nice high concrete arch
We have a lot of ok old cemetery in are area we have alot of state land in Upstate New York. The state land they're is a old like horse corral in the state land it was the old Cemetery we have a lot of history up here
I subscribe to Southern Searchers channel ( he digs privies for old bottles) & he ran into major trouble with the cops in Alabama. He was just minding his own business- wasn't trespassing or anything. They chased the guy down the road! He never usually has any bother anywhere else
While checking out the old bridge or road, no bottles found along the stream? I miss the metal detecting you use to do. That's how I first saw your video, you were metal detecting.
Must also say in the field the commentary is the cows only shade clearly he's not bothered about the cows where there standing or anything there's no water around or well anything
Old mill probly at one time every road crossing with moving water had mills back 200 150years ago water was your enging for indistry ever brook and river crossing in my town has a 150 year old stone structure and when i reasech id to find it was water power type of mill they would damm them up
I want to watch..BUT knowing the two Roberts are treated heinously (and the dead being disrespected) will make my blood boil. This is so wrong! Gosh darn it
