After sitting for 16 years in the forest, the radiator needs a good flush out and the hydraulic oil is past its use by date, so Supercheap Auto and Gulf Western sent me some new fluids to put in the old girl and also some shiny new tools. Thanks guys, you saved me a fortune.

worked on this stuff for many years, the wear on the pins has nothing to do with the hardness and everything to do with the LACK of grease. Go with mild steel pins and proper grease, if you put hard pins in there you will bugger up the bushings as well as the pins. Look after the old girl and she will last years. good luck
@randys6698

I’d put automatic greasers on the pins as well. My paw did this on all his equipment, pins lasted seemingly forever. I used to run an old Hough 120 and I’d grease the pins in the morning and they’d be dry by noon. Greased them again and they were dry at the end of the day. My Cat 988 had greasers on it, pins stayed in great shape even after years of work.

@Marty T Just an opinion here, but I would leave mild steel pins in for the pivots. Pins are cheap and easy to change, bushings are more expensive, line boring worn out bores is way more expensive then pins. I know the work is done already, however just something to keep in mind for future endeavors. When a system is designed that will experience wear, it is common to design the system to wear at a central component that is easily repaired. Good work either way.

Maybe add some diesel fuel additive next time you refuel to clean the injectors. Do you run it on red diesel?. In the UK, red diesel is taxed much lower and used in machinery on private land only - tracktors, diggers, generators, etc... Using red diesel in a diesel car or truck/lorry on the public road is very illegal and if you're caught by police you get a big fine.

When I saw your bucket pins Marty I thought of the rebuild services in NZ for that sort of thing. They can rebuild the pin diameter with welds and then re-turn on a lathe to the correct diameter, so no need for new ones. Not sure where you would find that service in the SIs, possibly Chch. If my memory is correct, the pins from the factory were mild steel. Most of the aftermarket pins are mild steel, a smaller number have some hardening. Even mild steel is much harder and tougher than the bushing material. There is often lively internet debate whether pins should be of harden material. AliExpress have a lot of replacement parts for most Hitachi machines and they are very inexpensive compared to dealers and most of the easily available aftermarket parts. Those machines can run for decades more.

The bushing may be softer than mild steel but phosphor bronze work on the the fact it draws in the grease and user's it as self lubricant.any type of steel doesn't! yeah a hardened pin will last longer than the bushings but the key is grease!repin it grease till it's coming out the gaps then 3 pumps of the grease gun every 8 hours of run time!if it's sat for abit grease it regardless! should be able to hear the grease cracking!if the machined bores ie no bushings are out of round go mild steel even if the pin is captive/bolted if there's any play in the machined bores the hardend pins just gonna wear on the bore not the bush!

Way back when Supercheap auto first started their shop business (they were mail order before that) they were selling air tools and sockets very cheaply. I went along and bought a rattle gun,speed ratchet, air chisel,spray guns etc etc. 40 years later I am still using them every day at work. I don't know if the quality of the stuff they sell today is still the same but the sockets etc don't have one bit of wear on them and this is despite being used all the time. My take on pins and bushings, with wrist pins and rod bushings the wrist pins are very hard and the bushings are a bronze alloy,yet the pin wears and the bushing doesn’t. Any impurities in lubricant embeds itself in the softer of the two materials which is the bushing. The impurities embedded in the bushing then act as an abrasive on the pin hence wearing the pin, albeit hard, faster than the bushing. Take this as you may in regards to the pins and bushings on this machine, most importantly it is best to lube often even if it doesn’t appear to need it to push dirty grease out and replenish with fresh clean grease.

I restore a lot of early Mercedes injected engines and Mercedes recommended this very practice back in the 60's. The petrol mechanical fuel injection tends to create problems when the cars are not driven much (too much value in them nowadays) but ATF keeps everything very clean,including the combustion chambers. You can even add it to the engine oil before a change to clean out the engine. On the older mercedes diesels it keeps them very clean.

Awesome on the free supplies and tools! Glad to see you making things right. I really like that you are actually going to make all new bucket pins but I'm not sure if it was the wrong kind of metal or a lack of daily greasing which is what should be done especially in the area of the bucket, to keep the dirt forced out all the time and stop from getting in there and start grinding away. A good operator will grease his machine every day, and the bucket is one of the easiest to get to as compared to upper boom cylinder pin. And I'm thinking the person that owned this nice little machine and left it out in the woods wouldn't have had to, if he had been a little more diligent on maintenance which makes me think that he probably was not greasing it every day. This allowed the constant exposure to dirt around the bucket allows the grease that is there to become mixed with the dirt and making a very abrasive substance that constantly wears with movement and very well may have been the culprit as to what wore the initial pins so badly. But I'm sure by the time you get all done with this machine someday you will have it in tip top shape. Keep up the good work and the videos. I'm going to be interested to see what all you do to repair this machine as well as all of the things you use it for. That you would not be able to do had you not acquired this machine for free!

Supercheap are an amazing mob, Collected quite a few bits from the ToolPro line including their 150mm buff/sander which has copped a flogging. Going to upgrade my ugga dugga gun from their budget green brand to a toolpro though because its end of life is near. Supercheap makes impulse buying so much more value lol

Beginning to think your brand of "Supercheap" tools is the same as our "Harbor Freight" tools. Some of it is awesome, most is alright for a weekend warrior, the rest is crap. Funny thing you have to figure out is this...which category one of those tools you have is.
