Always nice to see a place in its natural state of decay without the destruction and scribblings of nutcases and their signature drawings of penises.

+ This is Dan Bell Hi! I'm not sure if someone had commented about the safe behind the altar, but I thought I would. I was raised Catholic and in all the Catholic churches I've been in (except the small ones) they use the safe to store holy water, and other blessed items such as the communion bread and wine. Thanks for the video it's fun to be able to explore with you all! Take care. :-)
@dmccarther151

My thought too, probably was used to house blessed sacraments and wine between masses.

Reliquary. Also, any other Catholics cringe when he walked up on the Dais thing and looked into the cup for the communion? I am atheist now, but somethings never go away.

YellowRubberDuckie why the cringe?
@vincentiuskennaldy9512
@vincentiuskennaldy9512 6 лет назад
as a (not so devout) Catholic (but still a believer), it makes me cringe also. It's the area that only the ordained priests / deacon could go into, and must be treated with utter respect. Kind of like Moses story with the burning tree......
@megharoni
@megharoni 5 лет назад
@@YellowRubberDuckie It's fine if there's no Communion in it. Heck, I would've even opened the tabernacle just to see the inside... with perhaps a reverent head bow of course. Sorry to hear about your atheism. Anyone who goes atheist by skipping over agnosticism must've had something happen to them that made them angry and lose their faith. Sending prayers that you find your way back home!

Well it pretty much is, all of that is due to deterioration, weathering, and no climate control. Now that he's put it on the map I'm sure there have been others inside. Most people don't think to scavenge through religious buildings such as this.

That is the Saint Frances de Sales Catholic School, an urbex favorite. The school is in Powhatan, Virginia, and was built in the late 1800s for African-American women. They'll probably demolish the building at some point, though there was talk a few years ago about an extensive restoration.

what a sad waste of a massive structure. think of all the possible uses this building could be used for.
@dougelick8397
@dougelick8397 7 лет назад
The sad truth is many of these old buildings are so full of asbestos and lead paint that restoring them to function would be financially impossible. For example, almost all the Linoleum you encounter that was made before the 1980s contains asbestos. So do theater curtains, some attic insulation, pipe insulation, heating duct insulation, ceiling tiles and in some cases, even in plaster.
@Annika9517
@Annika9517 7 лет назад
Besides the possible health hazards, and financial points that speak against a renovation, this place would be amazing if it was used. The rooms have big windows, it's bright and already has so many facilities that could still be used after a thourougly renovation. There are so many families that have to live in motels and shelters. I could see this be an amazing home for some of them or like a safe house for mothers with children. The classrooms could be converted to a families home, and there are dormitories and comunal baths already. As well as the classroom kitchens. That would be very nice. Or an assisted living program? Seeing them roam around that's what I thought. Wouldn't it be nice? The place is full of light and also has nice colours. And a big garden as well... Like close to my home they converted a big villa into a therapy center for people with various disabilities and also build them flats so they can now live together and learn from each other. It's a lovely project.They also train people to liveon their own. :) Regarding asbestos... I don't even want to know how many schools and sport facilities etc. still have asbestos in them. Probably all that were build after the 60s. And even though my school building was from 1881 there probably still was some asbestos put in during some renovations etc. (Lol the ceilings had straw insulation behind the ceiling pannels but at least I know for sure that we didn't have lead pipes anymore) And I didn't know linoleum had asbestos too. That's good to know! :O good that all my classrooms had parquet! So that's why the gyms are even more likely to have asbestos!

I rewatched the video and found out that it used to be a boarding school for black girls! www.katharinesfoundation.org/html/katharine.htm Sounds like a pretty good place. And I hope they somehow manage to rescue the buildings.

That school looks like it was abandoned in the 80’s or 90’s by looking at the appliances. Stoves were different in the 1950’s. Know some history at least before you leave an ignorant comment about integration. In the past Americans were clean and decent. That’s the reason why that school was so beautiful. Americans were decent back in the day and this school is clearly in the countryside. The trash tends to stay in large urban cities. White people and Black people were clean decent people in the past. The majority were Christians and there was no disgusting music or trash movies. The modern media and trash music is what’s destroying the US. Our grandparents and great grandparents grew up listening to beautiful music that had meaning. We listen to junk nowadays. It’s either Metal, Rap, Hip Hop, Pop, R&B or some other trash music genre full of violence, cussing, and innuendo.

@jimkey920

I really enjoyed this video. It was interesting on several levels. Why would it have entered the disused category? It seems to have been built in two stages, first stage prior to WW II. Second stage Post WW II. The presence of the aluminum casement windows would be post WW II. They were very prevalent in the 50's and 60's. I think the newer part was built about 1960 and the older part was upgraded with them then. the grounds were kempt and the place was tidy and vandal free! There must be an overseer. He/She must have been asleep when you were there. The chairs are collectible and would date from 50's or 60's. Future antiques. I would have tried the combination 6-6-6 on that safe! The heat source was either hot water or steam, I wish you had gotten to the Boiler room.

Reading your post was bittersweet. The preservation of the sites seems important but to be repurposed if Dioceses decided to sell. The structure and architecture could still be appreciated. But I am happy to know the explanation that there has been a retreat of newer generations not supporting a faith.

jolie robles The insight regarding shrinking Faithful is this: The scandals affecting Catholicism have had an affect on Church Membership. Formerly the Priest was regarded with respect and trust. A different anomaly has infected Protestants; the Mega Church, the emphasis on money and power and high living has put congregants off. Then the exposes' of Ministers and Theologians. Many have resorted to Murder. The Simple Truth and Humility of Our Lord Jesus is ridiculed and challenged by the Left. I very much appreciate your post. Than you.

St. Joseph statue was beautiful. That safe is behind all Tabernacles guys as the blessed sacrament is kept in it. We have an Altar here in Ireland with a bullet hole in it were the Priest tried protecting the Eucharist from a British soldier, so it is kept in a safe when building is empty, that's why the safe would be there. The "Estate" range/stove hearkens back to the 1950's-60's. I'd venture to say that school has been around for many decades, if not built in the 40's or 50's. "Estate" was originally an RCA brand for appliances (home/kitchen), and then it was acquired by Whirlpool and the "Estate" brand name is still made today.

8:15 The Estate Stove Company was founded in 1884 by the Kahn Brothers, Lazard and Felix. They had a foundry in Hanging Rock, Ohio where they made wood- and coal-fueled stoves for domestic purposes. Heating stoves and gas furnaces were also part of their product line, but it was the stoves for which they became most known. By 1888, their business had grown significantly, and they moved to Hamilton, Ohio. In 1905, they took on the name Estate Stove Company. They were bought by RCA in 1952, which was bought by Whirlpool in 1955.

Those chairs are amazing and the colors of the tiles and paint are so soothing. I would love a bathtub like that. Basically, I want to live there, but I'd never go near those creepy back stairs. This is my new favorite video. Thank you Dan!

The safe is probably where they kepy all of the altar pieces - gold candle sticks and so on... The sound of the wind moaning through the building really gives the video a bit of a frisson, and I jumped at 17:50 too :D

15:18 Floor scraper on right ... that and the catch buckets previously tell me this is a maintained building... at least they're minimizing the decline... it might be reused sometime...

As others noted, they do use the safe in Catholic churches to keep the communion wafers in after they're blessed (as Catholics believe at that point that they literally become Jesus's body). However, more practically the safe is there to put the chalices in, as those things are typically solid gold, occasionally with precious stones and such in them. It's the sort of thing that thieves know is located in the church and would make an easy target if it weren't in a safe.

What a cool, amazing place. Absolutely fascinating. With the exception of the dormitories, the interior looks eerily similar to the Catholic school I attended (and, actually, every one I've ever seen). I especially loved seeing that Home Ec room at 7:34. Oh, and the scariest things in the video wasn't anything about the building. It was those damn, huge, terrifying Wasps. Thanks for that.

This is by far the best exploration......I just wish I knew a little more history about the places you explore...like with the malls...it’s amazing to see these places still left fairly in tact and this particular venue could be repurposed for so many other things...it’s beautiful and sad and mesmerizing.....

Man...That wind squeals like a Boston Terrier. I like that kitchen tile. the color is rather nautical. The pastel chairs kinda remind me of Jordan Almonds.

That place is in great shape and should be reused in some fashion before it decays further and becomes a complete loss. With some work it could be used as a trade school or even converted into housing.

It needs a new roof badly. Without that, it's going to rot out - you can already see how bad some spots are (bad floor on upper level, standing water on that counter in the one restroom, etc.). Repairing a roof that big would cost a small fortune.
