This one is most definitely a very special abandoned Freaktography adventure!
The location I am exploring in this video used to be a funeral home, and it has a great little back story!
Back on October 22nd of 1926, Harry Houdini was in Montreal, Quebec for some shows. He was approached by a student of McGill University, the student wanted to punch Houdini in the stomach. Houdini had long claimed that he had a superhuman ability to sustain any punch to the stomach, due to his unimaginably strong abdominal muscles.
Houdini accepted the challenge, however before he was able to stand up and brace himself and tighten his stomach muscles - the student wound up and punched Houdini in the abdomen 4 to 5 times very hard.
The punch didn't do any immediate or obvious damage to Houdini, as he proceeded to perform shows in Montreal before heading to Detroit for another series of shows.
However, on his way to Detroit and while in Detroit, Houdini had been complaining of stomach cramps, discomfort and pain, which turned severe with cold sweats and fatigue. It was suspected that he had appendicitis.
Harry insisted on doing his show on the night of October 24th, he struggled through the show and collapsed to the floor as the curtain dropped. That night Houdini was taken to a hospital for surgery where it was discovered that his appendix had been ruptured several days earlier. The appendix was removed but the damage was done, it had poisoned his insides.
Houdini held on for 7 more days but he died on Halloween, October 31st, 1926.
Following his death, Houdinis body was transported to this funeral home where his body would be embalmed and prepared for transport and funeral. Following the embalmment, the magician was placed into one of his very own trick coffins that he had just completed working on for a future stunt. He was left in this coffin until a more suitable one could be obtained, he was then moved to the new coffin, transported to Michigan Central Train station for the ride to New York and his burial at a cemetery in Queens, New York.

Wow! What a place! Lots of rooms! Thank you for showing us!

The addition was built in 1930, so Houdini (who died in 1926) would have been embalmed in the original house part of the funeral home, probably the embalming room in the basement. The one on the second floor looks like it is probably in the addition.

This building probably started out as a private home and the tiled room in the basement would have been the kitchen. The small stairway would have been for the servants to deliver the food to the dining room on the main floor. Great video!

Wild. Thank you for doing this. Unfortunately, I don't know which of those rooms Houdini was embalmed in. I do have a recording of a 1988 interview with one of his embalmers. (I've posted it to my Patreon.) There were five of them. Interestingly, he said they all lived in a dormitory on the top floor. At one point he does mention a drain for the water to run off after washing the body. You did capture a drain like that on the second floor room. But other than that, no clues. BTW, you should wear a hard hat or a bicycle helmet when doing these videos. Those ceilings look like they could have collapsed on you at any time! Wonder how much longer this building will stand? Anyway, thanks again!

Love the window seat and book case on the 2nd floor, so many musical instruments and I hate to see all those records just thrown around. Embalming room with a piano - different. Sure are lots of rooms!! Always thought it would be nice to have a room with a skylight. Super video.

Pianos and organs in a funeral home are not uncommon. Music is often played during services for the deceased. Those rooms appear to be where individual viewing services would have been held. Cool video.

Back when this funeral home was built it would have had pianos and organs to play music for the visitors. Today we have sound systems instead.
