Fall is officially here in the Yukon, and with it comes some beautiful colours, but thats not the only "colour" in this episode. I was lucky enough to find an abandoned gold dredge, pretty close to the highway just outside Dawson City, so I had to of course go and explore that. It is amazing seeing this old equipment, and the methods used to mine back in the day. This is not a very large dredge compared to others, but it is still massive to see sitting out in a pond, slowly returning back to nature. The dredge was really just a bonus to find, because the highlight of the week for me was the mining experience. I am fortunate to know some folks here in Dawson with a mining operation, and they were kind enough to let me come out and move some dirt. Many of you don't know this about me, but before I was a film maker, I had a career in heavy equipment, so it was pretty fun to go and run some big iron again. This was also a great experience because I have always wanted to go and see one of these mining operations, but not only did I get to see it, I got to be part of it. We didn't get the gold perfectly clean to sell, nor did we have a scale that could handle it, were guessing it was close to 70 ounces. Not too bad for a weeks work. I really hope you guys enjoy this episode, because this is one that I really wanted to do and share while I'm here in Dawson City.

Babbit bearing as someone said earlier. Molten lead mixed with other metals are poured in and around the shaft for a tight seal. This method predates the use of ball or roller bearings. The channels in the lead were probably oil channels. I noticed the oil reservoirs were removed because those are collectables.

Babbit is a lead / tin alloy and those grooves on the inside are ways for oil.

Comment made on 7/10/2024 .... Bet I have watched over 5-6 hours of old video's again the last few days. They are still amazing as I remember. Plus I might have missed something. You impress me and entertain me every time. Plus I learn things!!! Can't thank you enough!!!! Always thought you had improved so much over the years and in ways you have but your personality and eye for what to shoot was always spectacular!!! #1 in my book!!!!

These dredges in Oregon worked up until WWII. There is one in Sumpter, Oregon that has been preserved by replacing that hull with a hull shaped concrete base in the pond. It looks ready to go and is fairly complete. You can walk through the main level and imagine all the noise. Amazing how they dug out a pond in front and filled it in behind.

Dawson City is amazing and if you take the top of the world highway thru Alaska to make your way south, it is littered with abandon dredges! Dredge #4 in amazing to visit! They Canadian Forces Engineers were brought in to look at all the tools to figure what they were and did as everything was custom built on site. Truly an amazing feat of Engineering! I am so happy to see you in Dawson City and the Yukon. I spent 10 summers there in my teens and early adult years and I would go back in a Flash! Thank you for sharing this video :-)

Another vote to go see the paddle wheel graveyard. Explore Adventure mentions it and I second. Worth the trip all by itself if you ask me. Take the ferry across the river, park in the campground and walk the river bank away from Dawson. You will see it. Go way back into the bush. Lots there.

Nice to see Yukon stuff! Here in New Zealand we had a gold rush time (my great uncle went to the Yukon as it seemed better than NZ @1908 we still have a wee nugget he brought back! NZ made gold dredges they floated in the dredge ponds & chewed their way along, the strange giant "worm casts" are how they leave the country! the two floating side by side floats had a giant bucket chain working between them. NZ built over 200 dredges but this one is more recent than 1920 I think. you get to some interesting places Take care I hope you have company these old sites can have dangerous stuff. Old abandoned dredges I checked out 40 years back were all in VERY deep ponds & the woodwork was vey rotten so watch out Thanks ...wish I was 20 again!

3:50 It's a Babbitt bearing, 3:45 the attachment sticking out of the top side is a greaser missing the cap. You overfill the bowl, screw the cap down, compressing the grease, forcing it into the bearing. You keep filling the bowel until it gets difficult to screw the cap down. Every so often while things were running, you give the cap a twist until you get resistance, forcing the grease into the bearing. Ingenious, Eh, or what?
