Record Low Water Reveals the Past | Getting Prepared for Winter in the Rig | Destination Adventure

Getting the rig prepped for winter has been a tough task, because winter arrived basically overnight. Maintenance should have been the priority, but getting some heat into the rig was a must. Never the less, I am very happy with the progress so far. At temperatures closing in on -10 C I have not had to use the heater above the lowest setting. I suppose that does make warmer weather a bit of a challenge for finding a comfortable temperature, but I guess thats what windows are for. ;) The next big test will be the water system. I think that the duct fan will do the trick nicely, but I am bummed to see how poorly the current system is performing. Nights below -6 are still causing sections of pipe to freeze, but if theres a way, I will find it.
Being back home is very nice, but all of these days living back in the shop can be pretty depressing, so it was very nice to get out and enjoy some time in nature again. It is a different feeling, exploring in these harsher conditions, but I am definitely looking forward to the challenges that come along with that. you never know what opportunity might come my way in the future, and all of these different experiences will have me prepared for anything that comes up.

You're going to have to take it back and insulate the compartment where the heater is and batteries. It would stay warmer longer and not use as much heat or fuel or lose heat

Yep use sheets of aluminium poly carbonate sheeting (very easy to work with Dremel and Stanley blade) then fill with expander foam between the sheeting 🤌
@projectx1989
@projectx1989 6 месяцев назад
@@Destination_Adventure I assume that @korbelkiller7106 means is that even though the pass-through is nice and warm it is losing a lot of heat through the aluminum walls of the compartment. A small layer of insulation on the walls would make quite a bit of difference to heat retention and save you some money on running the heater. Another option ,although probably too late now, would have been to have got a diesel coolant heater instead of the diesel air ones. Using a pump and a 3 heater cores would have possibly given you more control over the heat in each compartment and only required the one diesel coolant heater.

I bought a 2nd gen Volt to get a feel of lithium batteries/electric cars. You can fast charge lithium batteries to 80% charge fairly fast. The last 20% is what takes time. You don't want to charge lithium batteries to a 100% all the time. It's better to stop charging around 80%. You can draw lithium batteries down close to zero but it's best not to. Leave 10 or 20% in them for longer life. For an example, Chevy Volts have an 18KWH battery but it will only let you use 14KWH's. Same goes for discharging. You can only discharge so low, then it won't let you have any more juice......Did you look into full sized semi trucks diesel heaters? They're plumbed into the engine coolant water. You can see the advantages........For heat in the camper, a propane light with a mantel creates a ton of heat..... But make sure you have adequate ventilation.......Great channel, Dustin. I look forward to every new video down here in SW Oregon.(:>)
@PaynefulT
@PaynefulT 6 месяцев назад
@@projectx1989 I fully agree on the coolant heater instead. Could have it hooked into truck coolant system, then while driving it would heat the unit. Also at night it would keep the truck engine warm so it starts.

Just wanted to throw a few thoughts out there. Make sure you have “make up air” coming in where ever you run the diesel heaters. You can lower the oxygen in the air if you don’t have fresh air coming in. It also makes the heater more efficient. If it’s not starving for air it will run better. Also the long run you have going back to the tanks, you should get rid of any 90 degree bend you can. Those really reduce the air flow A LOT. The more sweeping the transition the better. Talk to a plumber or an HVAC tech. They can give you pointers for sure.
@blueman5924

I thought the diesel heater has a separate intake for the combustion air required. hence the two fittings on the bottom. one exhaust, one intake.

If you want to you can weld a fuel line into the gas tank filler neck that reaches down into the trucks tank and then flare the end sticking out to put a rubber line on from both diesel heaters. That way you can eliminate the small tank and just draw fuel from the main tank. That way you won’t have to deal with a second tank to fill and add some extra storage space too. Just an idea. Cheers Dustin 🍻

I would suggest foam board on the bottom and side of the new battery to help keep it warm and away from the wall. Double check the specs if the battery. It should have an automatic cut off at low temperature sensor. The diesel heaters use the most power starting up but after that they sip on power. Get a jerry can for the diesel .

I’d get that compartment with the LFP battery stripped and insulated before putting all the work in. Will save you time energy (and money) in the long run. Remember you can charge to 100 % and run down to zero with LFP and it won’t cause issues. 👍🏻

Awesome video. I just converted the lithium this year. A few things I learned. I didnt see how you are charging the lithium battery but if it's hooked the the truck batteries to charge off the alternator you will need a DC to DC converter because that battery will pull a lot of amps. I installed a 40 amp in mine. As for the voltage it will stay at 13 volts until it dies it's not like a lead acid where the voltage drops as it gets used. I also carry a spare alternator and belt just in case

Hey Dustin, looking great there with the new battery, that'll make all the difference 👍 One thing I would just say, just in case you haven't already, what with moving one of the diesel air heaters inside the cabin with you, would highly recommend fitting a Carbon Monoxide alarm as a just in case - They're probably about $15 + batteries, but it's a good layer of protection for ya while in there matey. And install somewhere up at your sleeping deck level or higher as CO is a bit lighter than air.
@Destination_Adventure

I’ll have one in here ASAP, but it’s actually not a concern with a diesel heater. Air for combustion is pulled from outside. With propane onboard though, I definitely need to put one in.

@JimRO79 6 месяцев назад
@@Destination_Adventure Good Man, as yeah, being over-precautious is never a bad thing. Totally agree with ya there bud, the Diesel side is pulling air and exhausting outside, so 99% likely no issues whatsoever - just thinking contingency of later life, you know, like seals / pipes failing or any air intakes / vents into the cabin taking in vent exhaust from the heater (but if those are on opposite sides of the truck, most likely very little issue on that one)

I've recently joined this channel, so far, so good. Will Prouse has a yt channel that does all solar. He's quite good at what he does. As a former full time rv'r, redundancy is key, besides the diesel heaters, I would advise buying a 12v plug and play heater pad for the batteries, they come in various wattages, then insulate the battery boxes. Lifepo4 batteries don't like the cold, however from my experience as long as they stay above freezing they seem to operate fine. I had mine rigged with a 100 watt heater pad I could turn on manually, keeping my battery bank above freezing, even in sub zero temps.

You're going to run into issues if your only monitoring the voltage on your new battery. Lithium batteries will remain at about the same voltage no matter their charge level. Once the the charge level drops too low, its like a light switch and everything turns goes down. You will need a special monitor to keep track of the Lithium battery charge level.

The BMS on the battery with the app will control all of this. These new lithium iron phosphate batteries don't just drop off like the lithium ion batteries used to? These new ones being iron phosphate have for plenty of buffer for sag. Look at the size of the thing! Dustin you only need up look at your amphours and demand/usage and you'll know if you are in the green or not? Dustin the other thing to look at as potential one way charge setup using your truck 12v to boost your lithium 12v is by using a DC to DC buck converter. You can put a toggle switch in the cab of your truck and basically keep an eye on your app on your phone? If your lithium battery is running low, you flick the toggle and let the all truck alternator charge your battery for you whilst you drive 👍 You can run your buck converter on a relay switch so that when you turn the truck off it turns the DC to DC converter off and doesn't drain you truck battery then either👍

All you need to monitor are the amps going to and out of the battery. Bluetooth can be used so you won't need to physically check the battery.

@@jameshatton4405 Good suggestion but a switch is unnecessary since the BMS controls the charge rate. On LFP batteries once 100% is reached, charging stops. LFP batteries love being charged and staying at 100%, it's Lithium Ion batteries that a switch would be recommended

Just something small but in your little fuse box put spare fuses in the slots you’re not using. Keep up the good work!

Hi Dustin. Your heater under the table is set up similar to my semi truck. It's under the bed in sleeper compartment but I pull fuel directly from one of the tanks on the truck so no need to refill those small plastic tanks. Love your videos, keep up the great work!

I have a planar diesel heater in my jet boat, I just use a 10L marine fuel tank for an outboard that way its easily removed to refill it and I dont need a tank mounted permanently.

I just fixed my 2008 Ford Explorer old police highway patrol car .with the lights removed it’s retierd ,that sat for 2 years,,at the deelership. It needed 2 front pins near the tiers .back breakes .back roders ,a back wheel barring ,and a oil change .new tiers and new window wipers ,, AND THE REST STILL WORKED ,,everyone told me to salvage my truck.but the whole engine works so I’m so glad I saved it it only needed 2,000$on repairs now it’s good as new .I like my truck you inspirerd me to fix it thanks ❤

Winter is the time to explore the States, and Mexico, and maybe even further South. With the reputation lithium batteries have for fires, I hope you put in the equipment to prevent this.

Great video Dustin. I like the deisel heater idea. They were recomended by a long time marine electrician in Prince Rupert. But they still on the wish list!

Great channel, I wish someone would donate and wrap the camper and truck. Give it a great refresh. Maybe a big destination adventure logo on side.

Glad you're getting the chance to do some upgrades. With those batteries, I do not think they have a functional low temp charge protection. I hope I'm wrong, but I would verify that. I thought LiTime only had one battery that actually had it that works. (Their new trolling motor one)..Will Prowse on RU-vid breaks them open and tests them. Best of luck and sweet rig + travels.

Found your channel while you were building out the new rig. Really enjoying your adventures. It makes me want to visit BC! I hope you don’t mind if I offer some input on your new lithium upgrade. Consider putting a piece of purple foam board under it. While the air temp is toasty the mental it’s sitting on now is probably still freezing. Also it virtually impossible to know the state of charge (SOC) of a lithium battery from it’s voltage. You’ll have more accurate and useful SOC info if you add a shunt. I use the Victron SmartShunt myself. If you do want to learn more about power systems, I think the best related educational channel is Explorist Life. Cheers and Happy Holidays.

The battery is sitting on a foam pad, but I didn’t think to show. As for the SOC, I definitely have some more learning to do but it seems like a shunt is the right choice. Definitely be doing some more work to the system. Thank you for the input. 😊
