the section about the blueprints of structure, electrical, fire alarm, and fire suppression systems were the part that I found most interesting . I love that kind of stuff. 😀
I work there from 1999 - 2019 for the maintenence and fm company. I know that building like the back of my hand. Bit sad to see it like this. Made a lot of friends and met my wife.
The demolition team have now arrived on site to start with the insides then moving to the building itself. I suspect there’s loads of asbestos to get rid off. Under the car park is also a large oil tank used for heating oil for the building. Oct 2022-the beginning of the end.
It used to be The Ministry of Public Buildings & Works. I got a job there in the Punch Room on F floor, for a year, think it was around 1966. Then was a tape hanger and computer operator on the old ICL1301 & 1302 computers till 1970.
I worked down there too 1969-71 doing run preparation for the 4 ICL mainframe computers you mentioned. I dare say we likely met from time to time. One of the 1301 machines appears briefly in Bond’s The Man With The Golden Gun as well as a couple of Dr Who episodes. Paul.
Having worked in this building from 2002 until it closed in March 2020 it is so sad to see the state it has been left in! It was falling apart at the seams the last few years we were there but it still holds some good memories.
Fascinating - I did my first 3 Victory boxing training programs there run by Ed Loft - I did 6 altogether - the last 3 were done at the social building just to the other side of the car park which last became the Fitness Loft Gym - I see you done a video of that also. I only got to see the ground floor of this building where the Victory Boxing Training took place so I never got the chance to see the rest of the building.
Worked there from 1971 to 1976 when it was MPBW (affectionly know as the Ministry of Public Blunders and Wonders). They anticipated that it would need to grow and even put in foundations and stub columns for the extension.
Oh wow I'm totally loving this video. I saw the first video and it was fascinating. But to find the blue prints is totally awesome. I worked at Ashdown House from 1989 and it's so sad to see it left in such a state. I was one of the last people in this building clearing out everything before we had to leave in 2021. I would love to join you guys on your next journey through this magnificent building.
There's more than two security guards there now with dog patrols, there's also motion sensor cctv all over the place not too its like fort nox now! I'd be surprised if anyone can get in it and we'll played if anyone does manage it now.
Shame that a building that good condition is left to rot, should be used as temporary accommodation for people in need yes it will need some modifications
