Finding this "house' last year was such a neat surprise, but hearing from the locals that it was once a brothel was an even more unexpected surprise. The building is in good condition given its age and how remote it is, but with that comes the lack of a proper historical record. Big Ed, told me that it was actually the site of an old milling and mining operation, which makes sense but back in the day there were brothels in every town. Either story could be entirely probable, but for now we do not know.
The Portland Canal also has an huge number of beautiful waterfalls, wildlife and scenery that few people ever get the opportunity to see. It was a true delight to get the chance to really enjoy and explore the channel. It is also a delight that I get to do a giveaway for you guys and gals.

That graphite looking rod you found is the insides of an old large dry cell battery - the kind that was used in the 1940s and 50s for electric lanterns, powered telephones, etc - they looked like a large can of corn - they are called a "number 6 cell" - the original were carbon zinc and that's the carbon rod inside the cell.

Huckleberrys to hummingbirds or the bright blue waterfalls to mysterious mining cabins. GLORIOUS is right!

@@rickrubin1630 Welcome. I remember cutting up an old battery when I was a kid. Cardboard wrapped. Very old. It had washers top and bottom…filled with black powder and a thick black core, pretty much Identical to the one Dustin found. And how that round part fitted in perfectly, was pretty much how this one worked. I looked up “Cutaway of a battery” on a popular search engine earlier and that confirmed it in my mind.

I feel Dustin's pain in this video. Often I've been out hunting an old abandoned site, and not finding what I was looking for despite having intel. In the west coast, the forest just reclaims things so quickly that the land looks nothing like it did a century ago. In other cases, entire buildings were taken apart and reassembled in another town, so it could be that there is even less to find than you would expect. It can be a frustrating process, but it is definitely rewarding when you do find something. Thanks for showing us the highs and the lows, Dustin.

Lived the lifestyle 13 yrs offgrid on the sea in BC`s Clayoquot Sound, Van Island`s west coast. Everything was by boat, firewood chores or weekly trip to town for supplies. Black bear were thick on shore & daily swam right by my place. Never had a prob even with daily encounters but I wouldn`t trust grizz. I highly recommend 50ft thin bow line to secure the boat & never worry again. Yes, rising tide is best for exploring ashore vs risking "drying up" A fav past time was finding hundreds of sea lions at shores edge in protected areas & doing slow drift-by on the tide w/engine off. Often encountered swimming wildlife like wolf, bear, cougar, & even eagles. Found that life revolved around a lunar schedule with the tides all-important for chores or travel. Try to avoid wind against tide situations too, it`s ugly w/standing waves. Safe travels!

My father and i used to go many places in his boat that look real identical to this place ..i know of the silence and solitude of being the only one out in a vast wilderness it is over powering and the silence has a heavy presence that is almost deafening....it has been over 35yrs since i have been out to see the places of the N.W. and further N. I will miss the misty mornings out with poles in the water middle off some sound cut out of a most beatifully brutal place that is easly over looked with out a concern just cause of that sense of awe you get as you wipe the moister from the cheeckbones built up from the very mist collected from naughtical force of A boat were in on some sound due west up north to the northern wonders to be held one morning... I would give my left arm to join and accompany you on one of your great adventures ...the familiar sense would be multiple flashbacks Around every corner...doing this is no joke and always a risk ...safety is #1 as well as knowing a good sense of timing ...my left arm brother...🤘🤗

Another note. Cable and pulley systems powered by steam or horse, or by hand. Were how they crossed rivers, went up steep hillsides with heavy loads, and did MUCH of the work on the so called "frontier" in Northern BC back in those days. They did as much as they could using cables and pulleys (and rope of course) and things like that, because you can imagine, a spool of good cable and a few pulleys can span a chasm, or go up a hilside, and is more portable than the set of tools needed to build bridges out of the local lumber. Furthermore they used the rivers, the massive trees on the rivers here which all have steep banks and such to move the cabling, the engines, a team of horses, or just some pulleys to the lower slopes of the hillsides that seem so impassble sometimes. Best practice is when you wonder how in the hell they got somewhere, over a river, or up or down a steep embankment, or how they hauled some heavy gear to some seemingly impossible spot, look for evidence of cabling and other infrastructure, like cable loops embedded in bark, or rings of damage in trees which would logically make perfect cable anchors. Youll likely find it.

Absolutely love these videos btw, so interesting it has me posting. Keep up the excellent work.

The thing is once you understand the fact they use cables to do so much you can trace where the cables go to find the destination. Furthermore it means, that time you think "they didnt just go straight up the mountain?" yep, someone probably did.
