It has been months of work, but it is finally finished. This video really challenged me, but I am very happy with the result and I am so excited to share it with all of you.
This is Suquash BC, and it is one of the most undiscovered and forgotten sites I have ever explored. Our history here in Canada is not that old. It is also not very well documented, but rarely is it completely forgotten, but that is exactly what happened here. The northern end of Vancouver Island is rarely visited by anyone other than the locals, and I suppose it is just the perfect place for a historic city to become abandoned, and over 100 year become practically one with the forest again.
Since childhood I have dreamed of being the one to discover a long forgotten piece of history. This isn't quite that, but its definitely the closest I have felt. People do visit this site occasionally, but it seems they sure don't explore it.
There is a trail going past two of the ruins, and id say nearly 100% of the visitors don't leave this trail. You guys know that I spend most of my time exploring off of the trail, and that is why this place was so amazing to me. I found so much stuff buried under a thick layer of ferns and moss, and I'm sure there is still much more that hasn't been seen in a century, still waiting to be discovered. To many people, finding a brick, or a single wall isn't very exciting, but to me each artifact is a piece to a puzzle that gradually is built in my mind. I don't think I'll ever lose that child-like imagination, and I'm quite happy with that. If anything, it seems to be getting even stronger.
I sure hope you all enjoy this film, and I hope that it encourages you to get out and explore this beautiful world we have.

Always fun to hear about some almost lost history, especially when it's our own history. So what is the secret to long lasting concrete? If it's like the Romans made, they used volcanic sand that actually made the concrete stronger over time, even more so when it was exposed to saltwater.

I love being able to follow along on your adventures. We have so much history in BC, but being such a young country, we don't have as much as you see elsewhere. So much is also being destroyed, either by vandalism or just lack of knowledge or funds to restore. Thank you for doing these videos, and keep up the fantastic work!

@@Destination_Adventure the house burned down in the 1920's from what I remember.. The mine closed in 1935 (I think) but it sure has grown over a lot though.. there were something like 20 or 30 houses built up there, we only found remnants of 5 houses, and a lot of the same stuff you found. Unfortunately I dont have any of my old photographs. they were destroyed when my boat sank in Victoria in 98. We spent a week up there exploring the area.

It would be cool to meet you and show you around the old freezing works ruins here in Gisborne , it's a pretty neat explore and only an hours drive from the Tokamaru bay freezing works which are an even better adventure by my recollection (I went there with my family when I was rather young) they are both interesting parts of the history of our country, used for butchering and preparing sheep from 1911-1950 or so and have fallen into disrepair since, I'd be happy to show you around and tell you more if you'd be interested :)

As of June 5th, there's 11 people that are wrong. There's nothing to dislike about this and everything to like, love and rave about. Stellar job Dustin. Epic shots, great interview and an amazing story about a place that was key in the beginnings of BC. If the Hudson's Bay Company wasn't settled on Vancouver Island in the early 1850's, they wouldn't have been able to play such a key role in the Fraser Canyon gold rush of 1858. If you want info on that event, and the key historian it (you won't find any better - his family were gold rush miners), contact me. It's an epic story with amazing sights that will amaze you and your viewers.

And people today, look down their noses at people back in the day. The stone work is absolutely beautiful, it is like art. The concrete is of better quality than what we have now. Our forefathers knew quite a bit more than we give them credit for. Unfortunately, that knowledge is all but forgotten, or lost completely, and we are the poorer for it. That is the way it seems to be everywhere, structures built back decades, or centuries ago, can not be duplicated today, or at best, would be a poor quality representation. Great video, thanks.

I've just discovered your work, Dustin and you came around about 40 years too late for my beloved Dad to enjoy. Of course, the tech wasn't there, either , but he loved to tramp around old mining operations and BC was simply too large to see the breadth of in his lifetime. He did visit most of these places in bins and boxes of maps, though! We lived in bellingham, WA and we visited Vancouver and Victoria frequently and much to my mother's eternal frustration, we spent too much time in bookstores and places that sold maps. He subscribed to BC Miner for as long as I remember and I am 69 years old now. But, I never remeber remember reading about Suquash! So, you just might have had one over on him!! This episode frustrates me no end because of that amazing old Industrial Revolution technology rotting away out there that is celebrated in "living museums" and "street art" in Manchester, England now. And, elsewhere, of course, but BC still doesn't appreciate what it has right in its own backdoors. I guess the sheer exppanse of the place remains the issue. Well, thanks for taking my old bod out to the roads less travelled again. Do it now and keep doing it often.
