We visited secret abandoned ruins on an island deep in the woods, and the remains of the sprawling Rutland Prison Camp in Massachusetts.

A while ago I heard about something that caught my attention. The story goes that there are secret haunted ruins in the woods that no one has been to. These ruins are on a secluded island on a large pond in the woods, and getting to it is tricky. But we were up for the challenge, so we went to find them.
Now I should add that I wasn’t even 100% sure these ruins would be at the location I pinned down. Even if we didn’t find it, though, the journey there was gorgeous…and it was silent except for the sounds of nature.
I was basing this exploration off old info I found online from a fisherman who accidentally found this place…this is the photo he shared, and it was the only one I had to go by. He described his discovery by saying “I had strange feeling about the place… I didn't stay long”.
After our trek in the woods, we went to see what’s left of Rutland Prison Camp, including the cell blocks for solitary confinement, a long abandoned tunnel, and the old root cellar.
The prison was built in 1903 to house minor offenders such as drunkards and petty criminals, and contained a fully-functioning co-op farm to keep them busy and productive. In addition to the potatoes, the farm, also had chickens and dairy cows, producing enough milk to sell to the nearby town of Worcester. Of course, the prison facility contained cell blocks, staff housing, and a water tower.
In 1934 the whole place was abandoned, left to crumble in the woods. The bigger structures were demolished while these stone and concrete ones were just left as is.

I bottle dig in Massachusetts. Your find was special. Nice stone works. I found a whole town. Just stone foundations and chimneys. Place was so old there was only black glass and pottery. Clear glass did not show up there. My partner thinks they used thin tanned hides as windows. We did not report this find. My partner is gone now... doubt I could find it again alone. It was definitely colonial era. Took a month to heal from the bug bites. Topsfield, Wenham, Hamilton zone. Off the Ipswich a few miles. Bushwacking gets you interesting finds. We took nothing from that site. Couldn't even find a iron nail with the detectors. Looked like it was all peg.

Cool stuff... Word of caution for anyone wandering woods in New England. There are old homesteads everywhere in the woods and in some cases old wells barely covered or flat out open. Watch where you're stepping!!! I've had a few close calls out metal detecting.

It’s in Rutland State Park! I never heard of it & I’m in Massachusetts. I’m reading about it & in 1933 this became part of the water shed for the Quabbin Reservoir! (Oddly, many, many valley towns were abandoned to create this huge reservoir with numerous islands which can be seen from the tower in the Quabbin, in Ware, now guarded since 9/11. ) They say on a certain part of the edge of this place, you can look down & still see the ruins of homes in the water! I have never seen that part of it! It’s a huge area & how they ever filled it, I have no idea! UPDATE: It’s 38.6sq mi! Wikipedia says the water inflow comes from New Hampshire!

I live on land adjacent to this massive track of watershed land. This is just the tip of what lies in these woods. Like he said in the 4o's Boston needed more fresh water so they evicted four towns in the center of the state and took half of a few more towns, Barre included. All the people wore forced out and all that remains are the foundation, stone wall and old roads. The Swift river was damned to make the Quabbin reservoir, the four lost towns. The land adjacent to mine is part of Rutland state park which is for the protection of the Ware river and tributaries that also feed into the Quabbin water system. Most people who rely on this fresh water have no idea as to the human cost. It has become in the end an incredible natural protected are non the less. But stay away its haunted. BOOOOOO

It is a beautiful area to walk. When I walked it in the 80’s to 90’s, there were lots of beaver dams! The biggest 4 wild turkeys all fanned out crossed the road not 100 feet in off of route 9! Saw a huge buck with my dad...that had to be before 91. On my way home from work, I’d seen 6 deer crossing the street, 2x2! Lots of fly fisherman in waders, a nice place with lots of trails & it seemed quite safe! I’m betting there are people living on the numerous small islands who are preppers!

All the land that was taken for the the Reservoir is classified as Watershed land and you are not allowed to do any digging or anything that can potentially cause problems with the area that might eventually effect the the Quabbin Reservoir and good old Bostons drinking water. For those that enjoyed this and the makers of the Video you should check out Dana, Ma. it was also one of the areas taken but never flooded for the Res.

I am confused that map at :50 is the path that leads to the Rutland Prison Grounds, but you later traveled north (going back to your car) to visit Rutland Prison Grounds? This means the map at the beginning is probably not right. I am curious to know where you actually found the abandoned ruins then if they are not actually right next to the Rutland Prison Grounds? (I think you just misconstrued using Google Earth) As I have an overview and the icon that says at :50 is actually the location of the Rutland Prison Grounds and not the abandoned Island house. (I was a long time Resident of Rutland Ma) If there is a way to let me know where the Ruins is I would like to try to go there.

New England is not high on the "Urbex places to go list", but given the 400 years since it was settled (read invaded by Europeans), there ave been many places/buildings/etc, built and then abandoned.
