The Jackson Rooming House served black Americans in the days of segregation in Tampa.
Before integration, blacks were not allowed in the large hotels in Tampa including the nearby Hotel Floridan, which made places like this necessary for black travelers. I wonder if this home was listed in 'The Green Book' if you know, comment below. Many famous people stayed at the home including well known music artists such as Count Basie, Cab Calloway, James Brown, Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Nat "King” Cole, and Ray Charles.
I was only able to look in 4 rooms in the far back of the home. So enjoy a trip back in time, explore with Snowman, I visit dangerous abandoned places, so you don't have to.
Soundtrack; Blakey's Burnout, John Deley; Maple Leaf Rag,
E's Jammy Jams; Hurt So Good Blues, Unicorn Heads.
Shout out to my new friend Leon!

Just so you know the place is not abandoned..... someone owns it and they tried getting city council to fund rebuilding that house. And city council told the owner to kick rocks they wont help save the iconic romming house.

That about sums it up, the government does not want to save this place because it is a constant reminder that there WAS segregation in Tampa. They want to to forget history. Basically, the same set of folks run things now as when this place was needed to keep blacks out of 'their business'. My mother-in-law lived in Tampa in the '40s. Her mother would go into stores for her black friends because blacks were not permitted to shop in the white owned stores.

They wanna wipe it out but i see why in a way cause if im not born of it i dont need to be labeled as one but as a constant reminder that white people are racist is like stamping that on my newborn's ass like that child is gonna be racist think politics they're all politicians and they will do anything to either bring it up to rile everuone or stamp it out....

But this isnt what its about its about money and they're not willing to shell out a million or two to fix a house made of serious history they're in the business of filling their own pockets and if there is nothing to gain from this they won't even lift a finger for it

Happily as of 2020, the city has allocated about 100,000 to the conservation and rehab of the building, and Tampa Bay Lightning owners Jeff and Penny Vinik have contributed about 1mil. USF has also stepped in to make laser scans of the building to best determine how to save it. It looks like the Jackson Rooming House may finally be getting the attention it deserves.

I love this house! My son and I are history lovers, and we've stopped by a few times to grab pics of the outside. I wanted to see the inside because we could see the old bedsprings and curtains through the windows, so thank you for this video! There's a lot of great history in that house. MLK, Ray Charles, and a few other greats have stayed there! I live in Tampa. If you ever want to go on a paranormal exploration, I have all of the equipment. Keep up the awesome videos!

Its heartbreaking to see this iconic piece of African American culture being left to rot. This place was in business until 1989 so not all that long ago. By then it was known to be a special place yet nobody did anything to preserve it. So sad.

To be fair, Bubba The Love Sponge tried to save this place a few years ago. The plan involved a law office and African American museum. However, the town fathers put too many time restrictions on the time table for having each phase of repairs done. When you try to save a building this dilapidated, you are going to find more problems the deeper that you go. Timetables are going to fall by the wayside. The end is nigh. I looked inside, I'm no expert, but it looks to be too late for help now. Very sad. But I believe that there are many decision makers in this town who want this place removed from history. To them it is a daily reminder of how their own fathers mistreated African Americans in this city.

Unfortunately, this is true of a lot of history in Tampa. A ton of historical buildings were destroyed in downtown and Ybor to make parking garages/lots, and Ybor and Seminole Heights are destroyed every time they want to expand the interstate.

Hey, ran into you at Oaklawn cemetery - check out Cassadaga FL - located in Volusia County, Florida, United States, just north of Deltona. It’s known as the Psychic Capital of the World. Neat little town! @snowman

It's history, and a shame that it's gotten this bad. I'm glad they're restoring it! And thank you to Jeff Vinik for donating so much to the restoration.
