Abandoned Kmart - St. Albans, WV 

The ghost of Kmart playing vintage tunes!

St. Albans is my home town and I grew up about 4 blocks from there. I’ve been in that store hundreds of times - I’m pretty sure I was in there the day it opened. That used to be a thriving shopping center. In fact, the strip mall that adjoins it started life as an indoor shopping mall. The building on the parking lot was a Ponderosa, but several restaurants have been in there since it closed.

I miss our Kmart. We used ti go to Kmart frequently. Most of my toys came from Kmart.

I used to shop in this Kmart as a child in the 90's with my mom along with the krogers that is further down on the other side of the shopping center. This place also had a garden center and across the lot was a ponderosa restaurant that also now is something else or may be abandoned. I grew up in this area as a child as well, mom used to buy summer clothes for the swimming pool we'd go to in charleston.

Kmart used to have the best Christmas layaway program. I would do all my Xmas shopping in August, and put on layaway, and pick up right before Christmas. It was so nice. lol

Dude, it's awesome that you're dedicated to exploring all these abandoned Kmarts. I'm sure it takes a lot of time and energy, not to mention the miles you must put on your G5! 😄 It's always interesting to see what these buildings look like after they've been abandoned, but it would be even better to see them repurposed and used again.

It's interesting that you mention abandoned Kmarts being more scarce. The Kmart in my area, which closed in 2018, is still standing even though they were going to demolish it years ago.

My grandparents use to take us to the k Mart in St Albans Wv the 70,s & 80s , I worked at a K Mart in Teays Valley WV in the early 90, nice to see someone showing some respect to the store that have had to close because of Wal Mart,s . When I worked at K Mart we were told that Wal Mart would always open a new store close to a K Mart to run K Mart out of business,

I looked up info about this Kmart and came across an article and an obituary of someone who passed away from working Inside of this building. Those “stop work order” signs might’ve had something to do with this. Sad.

Wow, this was a blast from the past! I’m from this area, and I remember shopping for any and every occasion at this Kmart, and the one in Teays Valley, Wv (that building is now Kroger). Thanks for the memories! And my guess would be squatters. Unfortunately, St. Albans isn’t the place it used to be when Kmart was open. Sad stuff.

Looking back at the photos of this location, man it makes me so nostalgic for those summer days when I’d go shopping at Kmart with my parents for general items, swimming equipment, and shirts. I really do miss those days and I’m still bummed that my local Kmart closed almost 2 years ago.

K mart rock especially with a Little Caesars that offers pop corn and pretzels

I grew up in St.Albans during the 70's and I was in that Kmart a million times. Then, 2012 I rented the automotive side and moved my automotive/Tire business there. We put up the new garage doors and remodeled the inside including the black and red paint you see when you hold up your phone.

The post office used it one Christmas, that's where the fancy sign came from 😜. Thank you for stopping by my home town. That Kmart will probably be sitting there 20 years down the road just as it is now. I sure do miss it☹️ The restaurant closed during the pandemic. I think the vandalism was result of the drug problem here and people looking for a place to stay . The owners of the building I believe reside in Florida. Yes there was a little Caesars. This was a great place when it was open. Happy adventures😁

This brings back so many memory's for me, this is my Kmart as I always said. I had so many lay- aways at this Kmart in St. Albans. This breaks my heart and every time I pass this store I always have to look at it. Yes, that restaurant is closed, there has been so many food chains at that building. Just take the sign, who ever remodels that building will probably throw it in the dump anyway, so just take the sign. That area was the lawn and garden area.😊

Interesting. That restaurant has gone through several tenants. Was a CiCi's Pizza on the earliest Google Street view.

I worked at this Kmart. It was my first job. Still I've in SA. It was a fun first job back in 2006. The restaurant is abandoned. I'd guess that half the stores in the mall are abandoned. Anyways, there's a lot of drama with the person who owns the building and the city of St. Albans. Apparently the owner doesn't care much to rent it out because he's getting tax breaks for it being empty (I'm not sure how that happens). The Mayor is always hounded about renting it to someone because it's an eyesore but it's really out of his control. It was a cool building. I always liked sneaking around the back--in the stock room.

Worked here for years starting in 2014. Still live just 20 minutes away. Crazy

Can’t believe 2017 n 2018 were the last years I went to Kmart. It wasn’t always the best place but I had a few memories just like most of y’all. I’m only 31 so I didn’t get to experience everything some ppl did.

I loved Kmart! I sure miss it too! I worked for Kmart for 22 years. I started before they opened and after they closed to help close it. This is in Columbus Nebraska. It closed in 1997. When I left I was making $15 An hour, lots of merit raises, and 5 weeks of vacation. I stop and look at Old Kmarts to. I envied watching you checking that one out. Maybe whoever was in there is probably a squater! 😮 Our Kmart is still standing it’s now filled with inventory for a plant that makes airplane parts. Loved the video, thanks for sharing

I'm from St.Albans.....i would love to see another retailer go in there. Interesting fact, in the rear of Kmart all the way up to Kroger's under the road are barrels of chemicals. My Grandfather told me that years ago and the road was paved over them. We don't have alot of stores it would be teally nice to have a business come in there.

I worked there at one time ..used shop there too ..live in st Albans ..it's sad for sure ! Everything from the past is closing .

I use to always think my Kmart had the shelves that looked like they were in a smokers home and the lighting of a dungeon but looks like all of the Kmarts had that of the same.

I was born in Charleston WV and i remember living in the st albans area i was 5 years old at time lol can't remember whether or not if my mom shopped at this kmart but st albans brings back memories awesome video 👍

This Kmart, and the St Albans Mall as a whole, was built around 1974. Up until the early 90s, St Albans Mall was an indoor mall with a small movie theatre, restaurants and the usual shops (Radio Shack, JoAnn Fabrics, a record store, a musical instrument store, jewelry, clothes, and shoes). Kroger on the other end of the mall has been there since the beginning, originally built in the 70s Superstore style, it was remodeled into the Greenhouse style, then into the unholy architectural bastard it is now. The restaurant down by kmart was originally a Ponderosa Steakhouse. I don't know if any of the old storefronts from before the remodel still exist, I'd love to see them if they are still there.

St. Paul MN has an abandoned Kmart! It still lights up at night the last time I was there!

I don’t know if you have covered this place yet in Las Vegas Nevada rainbow in Spring Mountain there’s an entire abandoned shopping center that I believe you would like very much I’ve been there several times and I’ve had good experiences and it does have a Kmart in a band in Palos and a KB skateboards

Another abandoned Kmart still standing and not occupied is martinsburg wv I think spirit Halloween had used it a couple of years but nothing permanent. Great vid WallieB!

I actually have video footage from inside that Kmart on their last day open! Quite a few photos from that day as well. I live and grew up in St. Albans, WV. They were selling all of the fixtures from the old K-Cafe and the rest of the store. I would be more than willing to share them with you if you were interested.

I really miss shopping in KMART. I shopped in the Weirton, WV location and I went Christmas shopping at KMART.

I always shopped at Kmart and Sears in Uniontown, Pa, too bad they are both gone but never forgotten, and another place when I was growing up was Hills in Uniontown and Murphys Mart when it was at the Laurel Mall and Montgomery Wards which every once in a while I will get a small catalogue from them in the mail which I thought they were out of business completely!!!!

Did you know that this Kmart for several years was used as a United States Postal Service? That's why the sign was made. Also, this location was also a death scene, as a maintenance worker had also died inside the Kmart by touching live wire..

There is a very large Kmart in Charleston -Kanawha City WV.

Back in the day, and I remember when 2 Kmart Stores were Closed Permanently ìn the 1990's in the Red K and Turquoise mart days. The Kmart &Farmer Jack in the Kmart Building located on Sherwood and East Outer Drive in the inner city of Detroit Closed Permanently and has been demolished, and is a vacant lot to this very day. Another, Kmart Store located on East 8 Mile Road and Gratiot on the Eastpointe/Detroit City Limits has been repurchased into a Mini Mall. The Former Chatham/A&P/Farmer Jack Store also has been repurposed into a Mini Mall. These were old Kmart Stores from back when The Kmart Corporation was the owner. Just a little history that I could remember about Kmart in it's Day. 15:24
