Abandoned Kmart - Statesville, NC *2023 Revisit* 

I've shopped this Kmart many of times when I lived in Statesville. I think actually the shelving units in the corner that said sold on them was ones I bought. I didn't get a chance to pick them up. But it's ok. Enjoyed seeing Statesville Kmart again

I worked at that K-Mart years ago. From 1998 until 2001. Had a lot of good times there. Later I worked for Food Lion’s corporate office in Salisbury, NC and during my time there I oversaw the remodel of that Food Lion store as well as the others in Statesville. That was in 2016. Good to see that shopping center. I’ve spent a lot of time there.

They are currently restoring this kmart building and putting a uhaul storage facility in. I believe it is in progress now. Good to see they are doing something out there. That whole area is so sad. I grew up there, shopping at that mall and all those stores along w the theater. I will be 39 at the end of August. The owners would never allow anyone to re do the mall or JRs area. Very recently they finally put it up for sale after its all too far gone to do anything with. The walmart area is where everything new is built....

The cost to fix the kmart including the roof would be pretty expensive with the high prices for everything right now. I'm surprised they didn't take down the BIG K sign when the store closed for good.

Wallie, good to see you back in my neck of the woods. A little history of this shopping center, where the Food Lion is was formerly a Winn-Dixie and in 08 FL gutted the building and opened the new store. It is actually a really good looking store inside that does not fit the area. The Food Lion trailer behind the store does not move and has probably been back there since the store opened. It is used to store salvage, bails, milk crates, pallets, etc. until picked up. Most FL stores have these old trailers behind them for that purpose. This is what is done with most of the old unused trailers. I work for FL btw. There were earlier FL and WD locations behind the mall across the street as well as a closed Harris Teeter beside the mall and a closed Bi-Lo down the street. This area has become a retail graveyard and I hope this area can be re-purposed. Keep up the great videos Bud!!

Saw the thumbnail and thought "hey.. that looks like the old Kmart by food lion" and then read the title and realized it's actually the Kmart in my town haha

I worked at this Kmart from 2013-it closed. I had great memories there and when we heard it was shutting down, we were all shocked. The location did great in the profits department and all still baffled it shut down. I recently heard the building is now going to be used by U-Haul

Wallie you are correct, our SuperK in London, Oh had a BK in the parking lot built shortly after the new Kmart opened in the 90’s.

Glad you came to North Carolina Wallie was actually at this K-Mart on it's last day the store manager that had been there for 18 years gave an emotional farewell over the intercom. He got a lot of hugs and pats from the customers when we were at check out.

Old downtown Statesville is dead(signal hill area). Most things are now located on the west side of town. I spent many of my teenage years in that parking lot, and the mall across the street.

I got hired at Buc-ees in Daytona Beach so excited love Buc-ees now I get to work there !!

In the late 70's early 80's that place was rock'n. I've not been there in years. Valley Hills Mall is not doing great either, I don't think. I've not been to Eastland Mall in many years. We'd go to midnight movies every once in a while. I even tried the ice skating some, before the movie would start. The Arcade was really cool too. Lots of good clean fun.

Here in Matthews NC our Texas Roadhouse moved locations so it's old building is left Abandoned. Would love to see you film that location.

The Kmart in Thorndale Chester County is a carpet tile mart store and the part where the garden center was is becoming an aldis grocery store the Kmart in exton pa became a whole foods store and I believe the Kmart in Phoenixville pa and the Kmart in Columbia pa both became indoor uhaul storage centers.

Here in N. Central TX we got Food Lions in the early 90's. They flourished for a while, til about 1997 when Food Lion corporate announced liquidation and closures of most of their locations in both my town and surrounding N. Texas cities. I used to ride my bike with neighborhood pals to and from the Food Lion which was about half a mile away from my house for sodas, candies, and glancing at the adult oriented mags of the era. I also would visit with my mom/dad for occasional grocery runs etc. I remember the Lion logo, and their yellow/blue color scheme/letters. The building set abandoned for a few years until summer of 1999 when the building was purchased by the school district and utilized for Special Programs Education. Troubled children/teens were sent there for their daily dose of public education. It's still the site of a Special Programs facility, and when not in session; the large parking lot is also often used to hide the occasional blacked out Police SUV to sit idly by to catch speeders going over the posted 40 MPH zones throughout the evenings/weekends.

4 years later and surprised Kmart sign is still up since you been last here, usually the sign gets taken down 3 or less years after it closed.

Yo! I worked at the Food Lion featured in this video during the time this was posted! It was super weird seeing those green bins at the back of the Food Lion, I hated scooping up old produce to throw in there. I also fed a group of cats that lived back there :) Anyhow, loved seeing the Kmart featured in a video like this! I remember seeing a lone shopping cart in the middle of the empty floor space and I remember taking photos of it. If you look closely at the second section of vertical white bricks on the front of the building (right below the yellow mark on the logo) you can see a large chunk of brick taken out of it. That was because a woman ran her car into the Kmart after having a medical emergancy, I was just beginning my shift so I had time to run over to check if she was ok, she ended up being fine but her car was wrecked. This happened in November last year, just something interesting I thought I could share

And my #1 favorite pizza place: Little Caesars, which I had for supper tonight. I feel you too about Eddie. So I'm always with you about Eddie no matter what you say, Wallie. By the way, the Signal Hill Mall has gotten worse now. I saw a video here on RU-vid where it was moldy in there. It was on the ceiling. The Belk is walled off from the inside of the mall. You can only get into Belk from the outside.

Cool video. This brought back a lot of memories of my NASCAR trip to NC. Statesville was home base since I was in the middle of all I wanted to visit. I actually stayed at the Red Roof behind here, 3rd floor. I remember the JR outlet well also. Down the road was a Hooters I ate at many times. I think the restaurant that’s abandoned here was a Dennys, not sure if that one. Can’t remember all the places that closed from that time, the trip was in 2010. I remember people were talking about how Statesville was an upcoming area with a very bright future. The Lancaster area here in PA is undergoing a big change. The Rockvale Outlets are being condensed into one area and stores are being closed to make way for apartments. Gas station that was abandoned is getting new life, Ruby Tuesday is now a Japanese restaurant, and a Bob Evans was leveled to make way for a new chain restaurant. I took pics of all those places and I’m glad I did. Now I need to head back down to see the difference.

You should do a video of the abandoned Kmart in New Castle. As far as I know, it’s still sitting empty.

That Food Lion trailer, early to mid 1990s, guaranteed. That was their slogan back then. The Kmart in Shelby, NC was completely torn down, and a Ingles grocery store was built in its place.

I stopped in the parking lot while on a trip from the Triad area to Asheville, NC back in 2022, surprised no one like Big Lots has moved into the space. I wonder if the inside of the building is not worth putting money into why the building has sat vacant for so long.

I worked at Kmart 3149 broomall pa loss prevention and a Manager drove around Kmart before and after closing to checkout before opening and closing 2003 home Depot took over that location the store was opened nov 1974
