Abandoned Kroger - Weirton, WV. Enjoy a look at this vintage little Kroger grocery store. It served the downtown area of Weirton for 62 years before corporate decided to shut it down. They blame lagging sales for the reason for shutting down. I disagree with Kroger over the fact every time I passed this store it was full of shoppers. I bet they closed it due to the larger location just a few miles away. However for those who don't drive or don't have a car, the elderly, etc., this was convenient being right in town and easy to get to. Upon walking around the building, I get joined by a little cat that wanted to hang out with me. Obviously a stray but a fun little way to explore with the cat hanging out. Enjoy!

I live in Weirton and have rescued several cats that were dumped or born down there. Just today I found your video while looking for the number on the For Lease sign which was taken down, as the property owner has threatened to have the nice lady who feeds them arrested! She has been feeding those cats for 12 years and is terrified! Now they have no way to get food, and the car place next door called Fergusons destroyed all of those shelters... some that I made and donated myself. It is so terrible! At least when the workers were there, they looked out for the cats.

Wish I knew you guys were in town!! So excited you finally posted a video on this Kroger! You definitely caught the feel of the city and how much we depended on that Kroger, especially my dad who lives in those highrises and is disabled. Someone we know goes around and feeds all the strays in weirton, it's terrible. Anyway nice to see you here!!

I miss working there. I was there for 8 1/2 years as the lead dairy clerk. Me and my co-workers. We were p.o. when they told us that we were closing. They told us not to tell anyone before they told the public. Our regulars, who knows us very well, notice very well and they saw our faces and ask us what was wrong and we told them what was just told to us before it broke out to wtov9 and Weirton newspaper.

I lived in Weirton all my life till recently I moved out near Beaver Falls PA. I lived on Orchard street for about 15 years and remembering how busy that store was when I was little. I'm 54 now and to see how downtown is turning out the way it looks the way it is now, it hits you hard. I have many memories of downtown being a kid and all. The mill is totally gone and that's what really hit me only because my father and his brothers and sisters worked there for years. Downtown will never be the same. It's gone forever. And I'll never see it but would like to go through town again in about 50 years from now. That's if it would be a downtown.

So I live in Weirton WV. The REAL reason the “downtown Kroger’s” was abandoned was that the other Kroger store on the hill was losing money. So by closing this one it forces everyone to use the other store.
@WallieB26
@WallieB26 Год назад
That's just a crappy thing to do. Everyone who depended on that downtown store now has to go through all that trouble to go to the one up the hill. Corporate greed right there.
@tlt61
@tlt61 11 месяцев назад
I don't believe that the Kroger on the hill was losing money, if it was, it was due to the fact it was near competition (Walmart & Shop-n-Save). Downtown Kroger had no competition....but it did suffer from theft. I think the combination of theft and it being too small (running out of certain items) is why it closed down.

That "I wonder if they have cats back here... oh look, there's a cat!" and the cat footage is up to par with the famous "Look at the front, where it says Ames real big". It should go in your intro. It has the same shaky fast zoom in and everything, I love it.

That's surprising it lasted so long. A lot of the '70s/'80s "Greenhouse" Krogers were built to replace smaller, older stores by the hundreds (I used to work in an OLD 1940s Kroger that was renovated in 1978 to a newspaper office). Now the Greenhouse stores (where they still remain) are kind of the smaller, older stores of today (which I actually prefer). You only ever find them in rural towns with no competition though. Those Greenhouse Krogers were just the right size and layout.

You were talking about how close the 2 Kroger's are. In Mississippi there is an area with 6 Kroger's within 10 miles. But each one is hard to get to. It's a 20 minute drive between each. And all are open and operational. They most likely didn't want to remodel the old store.

This store is similar in design to the original A&P that opened in 1963 at the Northland Plaza in Watertown, NY. It was split down the middle after A&P moved to the other side of the Plaza in the 1980s. The original store was occupied by a video store in one half and Dollar General in the other. That was in the 90s. Don't know what is in there now.

Wallie, last time we were here was summer of 2019 when we were on a cigarette run (much cheaper than PA) ... Been to this store many times. At their service desk, they still had a sign saying effective Jan 1, 1986 the legal drinking age is 21... lol, it was a walk back in time. I use to be an auditer for Ktogers... believe it or not, the smallest in the chain is in Nelsonville, OH just SE of Columbus... 965 Poplar St, Nelsonville, OH 45764 is the address. This store is less than half the size of this one and still does great business. Love your videos, hope to meet up when we get back home to Pgh.

I used to deliver bread to this store between 2015 and 2020. It was always a slow store and the manager who was there for years was never interested in pushing extra sales (a lot of it has to do with the space issue). If I'm not mistaken, this was the only Kroger, either in the regional area or across the nation, where they paid rent for the building. The company didn't own it. So when the rent got jacked up, it wasn't worth it for them to stay. That's what I've heard anyway.

Kroger leased that building and didn’t own it which is why it was never fixed up when all the other Krogers across the country were, They never said so but I think that was the real reason it closed. very sad for the people who live downtown and do not have a way to get up on the hill for their groceries bc the bus will only let you bring a few bags on it at a time and there has been colonies of cats living behind the for years and there are many people who feed them and catch them to get them fixed and then the release them so they are pretty well taken care of

The Kroger in downtown Clarksburg, WV is about this size or smaller. We had 2 Krofer since the 70s. One was in a shopping plaza that moved in the 80s to a new shopping plaza. It was widened many times. Kroger took the old Kmart at the opposite end and doubled it's size and opened it in January 2021. They then closed the downtown location which was packed by the highrise people nearby yet sales were down. Now they have to go 10 miles to East Pointe Shopping center to the newer Kroger. The old Kroger at that plaza is a Hobby Lobby and the other plaza that had the original Kroger up there (Gabes Plaza) is a Big Lots

Until the late 70's, most grocery stores were no more than 25,000-30,000 square feet. Then, superstores became the rule. In Warrenton, MO, Kroger closed a late 50's-early 60's store about two years back when local competitor Schnucks opened a new, 39,000 square foot store. The Kroger originally was about 20,000, but expanded later to around 25,000. Kroger has a tendency to close older stores when new competition with new stores come along.
