Yoshikuni Kamichika is the name of the Japanese tycoon who built the Village. He first visited The Netherlands in 1979 and was transfixed by the architecture. He returned to Japan with the idea to recreate a village of Dutch architecture, not just as a business opportunity but as a way of revitalising the prefecture of Nagasaki, which, at that time was very poor. The Village opened in 1983 and closed in 2001. He never lived in the mansion; this was a museum of history, charting the 250 year trading relationship between Japan and The Netherlands. He sold it in 2001. Two companies have since owned the Village - one went bankrupt and the other still owns it and is trying to raise further capital to re-do it up. Yoshikuni Kamichika also created and owned Huis Ten Bosch, another Dutch theme park in Nagasaki. This is bigger and has been more successful than Holland Village. It is still s popular theme park today. Yoshikuni Kamichika died in 2021. He was a family friend, hence why I know the above.

Thank you so much for sharing this information. I looked online and couldn’t find much about the place but what I did find was in line with what you said. I was wondering if the information about his wife was true but I believe that if he sold it then he didn’t simply disappear. Always some sort of a made up story behind abandoned things to make life more interesting.

No worries at all - happy to share what I know. He was a lovely man who fell in love with Holland and had a 40 odd year love affair with the country - its history and architecture. He was extremely wealthy (a shrewd business man) and felt it his duty to educate the Japanese on their history and heritage links with Holland, as well as try to boost tourism and the financial fortunes of those in Nagasaki. His 2nd Dutch theme park is about 5 times the size of Holland Village and has done very well financially. He sold it also, to an investment company, but it is still regarded as his 'baby' in Japan. Ge also loved monkeys, and introduced them to the Village, so I'm not surprised you saw one near the escalator. Your video was absolutely fantastic and you have done the Village a great service in how sensitively you have filmed it. Thank you so much.

This by far has to be the absolute best location you have filmed in Japan. The house alone, let alone the theme park, are amazingly awesome. I can only begin to imagine the stories this place could tell of when it was in its prime. Truly sad to see it wasting away. Hopefully someone can at least save the beautiful mansion. Looking forward to the next amazing adventure. Until then stay safe and God bless. Steve from Oklahoma

I bet this was once a really beautiful place to visit. I can't help but think of all the fun families must have had there, and all the good memories that were made there. It's sad to see it in the state it's in now. I can imagine the grief the husband had after losing his wife. It was probably too much for him to bear. I must admit if I lost my husband I don't think I could go on without him. I totally get what the husband was going through. I hope he found peace. Thanks so much for the amazing work you do, it's greatly appreciated. ❤❤

Great place! That carousel is amazing!! It needs to be saved and restored. I have never seen a double-decker one before. When I was about 12, we had a small amusement park. Our carousel was a lot bigger than that one and I got to ride it all I wanted! ( btw, that carousel is now at the Museum of Natural History in Albany, New York USA) Here in the US, those horses are worth thousands of dollars each! Thanks for the memory. ( I am 69 now!! lol!)😊

If there are any surviving children they are inheritors of the property and taxes. Most family members don’t live in the area and don’t have the time or money to keep up properties do they let them fall apart. Their are “property banks” which list available properties. The caveat is that if you get permission to secure the property you are not so much an owner as you are a tenet. The hurdles to obtain a property are complicated with legal issues.
