Abandoned Rail Stealth Camping

I headed down an abandoned #rail line for some stealth camping. I hoped to find a nice little spot along the tracks and fortune was on my side. Perhaps a bit too stealthy of a #camping spot as I would say there was about a 0% chance of anyone finding me. Perhaps not a nail-biting night, but any night outdoors is always good.

Steve, I've been a silent viewer. I watch but don't really comment. However, I just wanted to say that as much as I love your videos with a little extra spice, like the roundabout, I also love these types of videos that are just nice and lowkey. I'd be willing to guess that many other people in this community agree with that sentiment as well. Just do you and we'll be along for the camping ride. This was a relaxing one but I loved it, thank you for the video and thank you for just being you!

Steve, we aren't watching the videos for suspenseful, stealth-camping action. Sure, that's how a lot us found you, it's just how the algorithm works, but it's not why we stay. We stay because of YOU. Your personality, honesty, and just plain wholesomeness is rare, especially on RU-vid. You are lightning in a bottle. You make us feel like a family, like we're there with you. It's something that you can't create an algorithm to filter for on RU-vid. Just keep doing what you love, and the rest of us will be along for the ride.

This is a very serendipitous stealth camping episode, in light of the passing of Gordon Lightfoot, who wrote and performed the Canadian Railroad Trilogy, one of his greatest hits. Steve, if you continue with the videos, please don't stop cooking. You're disasters are food for the soul. Everybody screws up. Seeing you be so human on screen helps me, at least, feel so much more comfortable in my own skin.

Steve, anytime I’m feeling down or anxious I put on one of your videos. Just now I went looking for a video for that reason and you uploaded 3 minutes ago as of right now (I don’t have notifications on). Just want to say your videos mean a lot to me as it brings me solace from time to time. Thanks for not giving up, this community loves you beyond words. Much love.

Steve. Have you ever thought of roof camping? Maybe an abandoned warehouse or something. Love your videos. Like a few other people said. You could camp in your living room or someone's yard.

It’s almost amusing about the amount of “paranoia” for stealth - is that a necessary worry? but I enjoy the experience and Steve’s wonderful voice, so it doesn’t matter to me where he camps, I just enjoy it.

I’m one of the few that’s here because you camp. Not because it’s stealthy. That’s just an interesting factor to you that I never asked for. Loved the episode. Love the channel.

When I watch these, I don’t think in terms how to be sneaky, or get away with something, I think about how to deal with sleeping outside if I absolutely had to. Great tips here!

Awesome to see you Steve! Keep at it. I'm homeless, and I sleep by the tracks very often. It's a good place to camp. The jurisdiction can confuse cops into leaving you alone considering the railway has there own police. And hearing trains can be soothing at night.

Steve, to answer your question about lighting tricks: You want blue light. Our eyes have two modes, daytime and nighttime. When it's bright, you will be able to see greens and yellows extremely well, but blue will be hard to see. When it's dark, you can see blue best. That means if you are in a dark setting (hiding in the woods) and other people are in bright settings (the highway), you get a double whammy of you seeing blue best (making everything look "brighter" than it is) while simultaneously using the color other people can see the least. This is why backstage lights are blue. It's both easy for those backstage to see in dark lighting, and hard for the audience to see any light that leaks out. If you bring a blue flashlight to the campsite, you can capitalize on the same phenomenon.

Former chef here, that pan wasn't hot enough in the spot where you put the chicken that the coating fell off of, and was too hot on the side that burnt the chicken. Just try to elevate the pan a bit next time so it can heat evenly :) (Side note, cook for a decade before I went to school to be a chef, not one anymore, but my chef's finals were of course cooking. I brought in my cast irons, everyone made fun of me. By the end of the competition professor chef said it was a good idea and the entire class was asking me where to get them. I had no clue, ours were handed down - who knows how old they are. Get a light weight cast iron skillet, you can more easily avoid this problem.)

OMG my heart was going a bazillion miles an hour as I thought you would going tumbling down to the road in the middle of the night!! Was so relieved when you woke the next morning in one piece! Steve, even the most "mundane" camp with you is never, well, mundane! Charcoaling your dinner, rolling a rock, and the fact on video it looked like your hammock was in a precarious position made it a Classic Steve vid! I can't wait for the next one (they are a guilty pleasure!). A big thanks to Scott for filming the stake out spot too! Hope you're having fun on the road..and please for all our sakes STAY SAFE!!! Peace and Love from Australia

The most true statement I’ve ever heard in my life “They call it a spork but it doesn’t do either very well.” Just to add, also a good lesson on why you should perfect 1 thing at a time or else you’ll just be average at both.

As a 40 you old guy myself, I completely understand you wanting to move away from the stealth videos. Being as I sometimes use your videos as a cooking show (with great success, might I add). have you thought about doing primitive cooking videos? The mushroom burgers I made based after yours were AMAZING 👏😋

Thank you, Steve! You shouldn't be so hard on yourself, love all the videos you make. We've been going through some very difficult losses since the beginning of this year so we appreciate your sense of humour. The look on your face when your rock seat went rolling away, I thought for sure it was going to end up down by the old highway retaining wall. Grateful for the giggles you send our way. Take care.

Great video as always! BTW- Being a railfan and a train enthusiast I would bet those piles of ties you see ... you know.. the ones you said look better than the others still in place between the rails... are actually recycled from another line. Often RRs will recycle ties off one line and reuse them on another less-used line if the ties are still in decent shape. That is why those piles of ties look better because they ARE better. They just were never reused on this line. They were dropped off and then abandoned when the line was abandoned.
