Two intrepid fellows set out to track down the fabled long lost Range Rover of Somerset. Once found, can they tickle the old girl back into life and make her roar again?
Project Kermit is a 1978 Land Rover Series 3 109 (long wheel base) which is being stripped right down and rebuilt with a 200tdi engine and a few other improvements.
The other videos in the series can be found in this playlist:

@@zavier1304 they have a tendency to disassemble themselves because they're designed to be easy to fix, people see that as unreliable because "things are always going wrong", but often with a Japanese or German vehicle, it'll work perfectly for ages and then out of the blue stop working altogether, because they are designed to work perfectly, rather than being designed to work well.

Even when the newness wears off old technology it is still better than new technology when the gremlins start protesting by throwing error codes!
@Berkeloid0
@Berkeloid0 5 лет назад
Yes and no - error codes can be quite helpful in fixing problems quickly, the real issue is when the manufacturer doesn't share what the codes mean and makes it difficult to replace the parts. It's not new technology that's the problem, it's poor design.
@JonDingle
@JonDingle 5 лет назад
@@Berkeloid0 Any mechanical equipment can be worked on and diagnosed by qualified and unqualified (but experienced self taught) engineers and mechanics. That is how the evolution of steam age and combustion engine era has survived. Also, it was possible to repair most parts (not all) instead of needing complicated software and a computer to tell you where to look and what to swap out. The new idea of fitting instead of repairing actual deskills mankind, uses more resources, wastes more resources, devalues equipment to markets and limits the life of a vehicle and thus forces it to be recycled sooner. I agree there are some advantages but on the whole computers make technology to stop the normal working on equipment and raises income from selling parts and services. All in the name of economy and emissions laws and some of that is bullshit control freak politicians meddling in the real world to score points with snowflakes. I still maintain that old gear is more environmentally friendly since it uses less resources to design it, make it, transport it, service and repair it. So called "emissions regulations" are there to make money and life awkward for ordinary people.
@Berkeloid0
@Berkeloid0 5 лет назад
@@JonDingle I agree with your complaints but disagree that this is because of computers. The same person who can learn mechanical skills can also learn computer and electronics skills and then repair devices just as well, providing the manufacturer hasn't intentionally created complicated software designed to restrict repairs. Having worked as a computer programmer for many years I find systems with computers in them much easier to diagnose and repair than the "old" mechanical systems, because I lack experience with mechanical systems. But I also find systems I cannot easily repair because the manufacturer has deliberately hidden the way things work. My point was just that this isn't the fault of computers, it's the fault of companies being greedy and designing restrictions into the product to prevent people from working on them. Sure that's much easier to do with computers, but it's not the computer's fault, and there are plenty of complicated electronics around that are very easy to work on and repair because they were designed to be easily repairable.

I thought engines were meant to seize if you left them un-run over time, of course I don't know how much time.

they can, keyword there is can. it really comes down to where they were left and how they were left. if you leave an engine in a car with the bonnet shut and it doesn't flood in your area you're probably fine, now if you leave the car with say no bonnet and hell no aircleaner, thats when things get real bad, i had a 21ru celica engine sitting in my shed for over 18 years, went and dropped it in my celica and sure enough fired up just fine so like i said its not so much how long you leave them more so where you leave them. one thing i will say is if you're gonna go and start and engine thats been sat forever, either hook up an oil pressure gauge or if its a pushrod engine, you can pull the rocker covers off and make sure it has oil pressure when its cranking because if it doesnt and you start it and keep it running with no oil pressure THATS when it will seize.

love these videos by Max, but at the end i get this dodgy RU-vid advert at the end of someone who just brought out a rap video. RU-vid needs to needs to choose it's content more wisely for it's desired ordnance who watches these video's....... Just thought i'd poin that out.

just block ads, send him some money on Patreon if you want to support him, or anyone else, it's about 1000x more beneficial for them and, well, you don't have to watch ads...
