This is now a very rough area of Columbus. It’s so,sad because Eastland Mall and surrounding area used to be a gem. Developed by Visconsi & Jacob out of Cleveland. The same developer that was namesake of Jacob Field, home of the Cleveland MLB baseball team. I won’t say the changed name.
The old camera catches the overall mood of this former Steak&Shake, and the Eastland area in general. I believe this location actually closed closer to 5 years ago because I am pretty sure this one closed before COVID and took me by surprise. I ate at this location several times and last time I took my kids there in 2018 or so it was really busy, and always seemed so when we were there. I drive by this area several times a week, and my wife drives by every day, and it was boarded up for years but recently noticed that it is no longer, as your video shows. The property changed hands earlier this year and earlier this summer I saw some folks doing something to the inside so I'd been hopeful that maybe it would re-open as a new S&S or other concept but so far, looks like they really didn't do much and any work has stalled.
I’m from Columbus and this is on Hamilton road, let’s just say in a part of town where people break out windows for fun. There is a TON of abandonment in this area, including Eastland mall which you mentioned, an abandoned Kroger, Toys R Us and the Fort Rapids water park
Sadly true. I went to high school in Whitehall a couple miles north of where this is (and oddly live again now, right off Hamilton) and back then (early-mid 90s) the mall and area in general were absolutely hopping. On weekends leading up to Christmas traffic on the exit ramps to Hamilton Road would be backed up for miles. Not only was the mall busy back in those days but there were so many other shops, stores, restaurants, movie theaters, hotels..lots of 1st rate chains and some smaller local, regional favorites. Now while the Eastland area isn't completely barren, with a few viable stores and restaurants still open and with recent road and infrastructure improvements, it is a shell of its former self. It's becoming a graveyard of late 20th century retail. Brice Road took over the main far east retail corridor for a bit but that didn't last long as now 256 is pretty much in that standing. Anyone interested, check out some of the videos of other post-modern abandonments in this corridor. Eastland Mall has not even been closed 2 years and already well on its way to looking like Dixie Square pre-demolition. As far as the waterpark/hotel there is actually an active arrest warrant for the owners who actually are all in California. It's wild!
@arrowguy173 A lot of the businesses moved to exit 112 (Rt 256) on I-70. Target moved there in early 2009 (I remember when it happened) and Best Buy is over there also. Meijer (now a Goodwill) is on Diley Road in Canal Winchester like you said
Awesome abandoned video, Wallie! The picture quality on the camcorder is excellent! I've eaten at steak n shake and I liked their food. It's been number of years since I've eaten there. The 3 steak n shake locations that I've eaten at are Robinson Township, (this location closed a number of years ago, Monica, PA, near the Beaver Valley Mall, ( this location has closed a number of years ago), and the St. Clarksville, OH location. As for the St. Clairsville location, I honestly don't know if this steak n shake is open or closed.
My wife use to go to the steak and shake in Bradenton Florida back in the late seventies. We’ve gone there together a few times in the last twenty years. The food is good. This was nice Wallie and the camera was good , thanks 👍
Wow! I didn't realize they were closing down so many of them. We are finally getting a brand new steak and shake down here in Morgantown. Let's see how long it lasts LOL. Keep up the good work. Love your videos.
Hello Wally from Columbus Ohio... The York steakhouse over on the west side of Columbus is fantastic.. they finally demolished 90% of that mall across the street.. 40 years ago that used to be a great mall to go to
Yes that is true the owner is retiring.. there is an old abandoned O'Charley's over here off of Georgesville Road in the shopping center.. however and barbecue place is supposed to be taking it over
Several in Ohio also closed around the start of COVID. The location in this video actually closed shortly before COVID believe it or not. I used to like Steak and Shake a lot but I have only been once since the pandemic. While the food was still fairly good, the service and wait times were awful, and the prices ridiculous. It used to be a good meal, not gourmet but a step and a half above the big 3 burger chains and for a reasonable price. Not so much now with the remaining open locations.
There's an abandoned Steak and Shake here in Kansas City ... It closed sometime in November of 2023 ....open 1 day closed the next ...all of the signs are still up... No signs that say closed or why they closed or what other options people may have ... Could reopen tomorrow if that was the plan... But that's not the plan ...thanks for the video...and stay awesome Wallie B.🎉
Wow Steak N Shake restaurant abandoned is Back Wallie And I hope you had lot fun stuff you doing so Keep it Going I really Appreciate it thanks for Sharing.
I love that you're using the old school cameras. It takes me back down memory lane & seeing the videos reminds me of a happier time in my life. I think there is still a steak & shake in Ontario Ohio it's been closed since at least 2008. My town also has a closed up save a lot & rite aid. I kept saying I was going to film them & get pictures but I've been so busy I haven't had any time to do it.
Turns out I was yesterday years old when I found out, not only does GE have their own camera, they have lots of cameras. Camera Conspiracies just did a video about a GE point and shoot with 10x zoom and 720p res. He mentioned that they have various cameras!
You are about an hour from me. Cambridge Ohio. As I have mentioned before on another video. You got me started exploring. I will have to check this out myself. Wife and I love stake and shake. Cheap and good for a nice meal. Love the new camera. For $35 it is great. 267,000 on the bee? Impressive. LOL How is it so clean in there? Get that Kodak. I very much enjoyed watching. You stay awsome also.
Interesting how they took off the boards. When I visited 4 years ago it was all boarded up. Have you tried exploring Eastland Mall yet? It’s one of my favorite abandoned malls next to the demolished Jamestown Mall.
While some have obviously explored. it is really difficult to do, especially by day. There is extensive fencing around the property, an active charter school there, and quite often a wide police presence around due to the many still occupied apartment communities in the area. It's also not the type of explore where you can casually park near it and walk in. Lots of prep and equipment, backup plans needed for this place. Even though it's only been abandoned for less than 2 years, it's already almost in pre-demo Dixie Square condition with some areas completely flooded and/or rotted
Awesome! I hope you can do more with this camera! I have never been to Steak N Shake(Oregon really does not have much) but they sound good. Would you recommend I go to one? Wow! The Bee Friend has a lot of miles on it! That makes our cars look like they have low mileage and they both are over 100 thousand miles! I hope the Bee friend will live to see many more miles.
Yea they closed up quite a few in Columbus. Some reopen with new franchise owners. There's 11 left in the area. There were way more than that before 2020.
pretty cool filming with older cameras...is it just me or is the intro a bit faded when you film with these cameras ? keeping with the theme if it is take care Wallie
we have a Checkers here in Smyrna tn that closed down 3-4 years ago,, I made a video of it,, a few months after that, it opened back up,, seemed to be doing well,, just noticed the other day, it closed down again, and now looks like it needs to be knocked down, thats what happens when you quit selling hot apple pies,,,,,
That camera looks like my canon S2 that has a hell of a zoom on them thats only a 15x but there not bad my canon will do 30x or 32 i cant remember canon is the way to go for a camera..that one you got does nice video good color not bad for 35 bucks..👍🏻did i hear you right 267 miles on that car holy prrreeee holy that thing is goinna fall apart in the middle of the highway haaaa maybe not seems like it runs good..
GE makes and made everything, they made traffic signals, traffic signal LED inserts, traffic signal incandescent bulbs, fans. What haven’t they made lol
interesting thing is that all the columbus steak N shake locations got brand new awnings a few years back.. then a couple of them closed up right after.. thats the extent of the "renovations".. but really the expoerience has gone down the tubes .. I pretty much quit eating there once it became just another fast food.. I live in grove cirt where our steak N shake does still operate.. as does the one on georgesville..homeless were breaking in from what i remember of it.. really amazed in that area of town the whole place isnt destroyed
Well on this stake n shake i used to love the one in Pittsburgh why did they close i miss that place a lot there burgers were the best..and speaking of camcorders you need to find a Jvc HDD/micro sd hard drive camcorder i have 2 i have a 30 gig one and a 30 gig hybrid it records fantastic it may even be better than a apple phone for video try and find one you will be shocked how good they record i still use my 2 to this day..
