Now is the time to express your interest in turning this stretch into an official bike trail. If you think it is a good idea please forward your words of encouragement to Don at this address:

He is working hard to make this a reality so please let him know that people have interest in this project.
History:
Originally planned as a railroad route construction began in early 1884 and continued until late 1885 when the project was scrapped. One of the nine originally planned tunnels was even finished and some of the others were close enough that workers could hear each other as they worked to meet in the middle.
In late 1934 an idea was introduced to use the original rail bed as a highway route and on October 27, 1938 the groundbreaking began. On October 1, 1940 at 12am the superhighway opened.
Unfortunately the designers and engineers underestimated the popularity of the personal automobile and by the 60's the tunnels began to create massive backups as the 4 lane highway dropped down to 2 lanes for the tunnels
After deciding to bypass Laurel Hill Tunnel and a large bypass around both Rays Hill Tunnel and Sideling Hill Tunnel they closed this stretch for good November 26, 1968 creating what is now known as "The Abandoned Turnpike"
