Abandoned VW Camper- Will It Drive? 1987 Westfalia parked for 10 years! 

I used to live with a married couple. We both had sand rails and 1 of his uncle's had 1 of these van's that the motor blew up in. He gave it to my friend who planed on pulling the transmission and putting it in his buggy. Well long story short version. He got sick. Van sat in the yard and finally his wife asked me to put it in the pasture (we lived on what used to be the family farm). It sat in there long enough for a 12 foot tree to grow up right in front of the bumper. He eventually passed on. 1 day a guy stopped at the house and asked if he could buy it. She told him it didn't have a running motor and had been sitting for quite awhile. He didn't care. He offered quite a lot of money for it. She took it . The guy took it away. He drove in the driveway 1nday about a year later and the camper looked brand new. Inside and out. He did a fantastic job on it. Turned out he was a high school teacher and had the shop class redo it for there senior project. It was beautiful. They rebuilt the engine and went through the entire bus. Looked better than brand new. An he still owns it to this day. That was close to 20 years ago now. Sorry for rambling on. Just thought you'd like to know it can be done.

I had one , an 1982 with a diesel motor -- very much a love hate thang ! awesome memories of travelling the Western USA and living in it ! Painted it purple and lived in Crested Butte , Colorado where I had to carry 100 ft of elec cord to plug in the block heater everywhere I went so it would start !

I gave my son Andrew a 8 7 4 wd camper 3 yrs. ago with 72k he drives it almost daily to work at Tesla in NJ.

I swear I smelt the interior when you popped the side door. Hot oil with a slight whiff of petrol con mould. Good job

That's a cherry. I'd swap gear oil STAT, then handle the maintenance items and keep that 2.1 going for a while. I'm running a 2.5 subi and 1.8T in my vans and went there only after the stock motors were dead. Also, nice t-slim Dan.

Where were you when I needed you, Craig? Last Summer, I bid on ebay for a 40 year old Westy that had sat parked in Arizona for the last 20 years. Ten minutes after I picked it up, it broke down. If Craig was with me, his expertise would have gotten me home, because he is so knowledgable about VW Vanagon's!

Titian red was the color in 1987, Bordeaux red was used in the later years, a darker shade. :)

Sure wish i had saved the VIN from my old 87. Thats ine of those i wish i never got rid of. That one looks like her. I had it repainted around 2001.
